Fujifilm X-H2 and X-H2S: The True Difference is not Video vs Stills, but Resolution vs Speed

Since the day FujiRumors unveiled that there will two Fujifilm X-H2 cameras, the whole internet world was sure: one is going to be the video centric version, and the other the still oriented one.

The main theory out there:

  • Fujifilm X-H2S is the video oriented version
  • Fujifilm X-H2 high resolution is the stills oriented version

But in my eyes this differentiation makes no sense at all, and never did.

I mean, we know the non stacked 40MP Fujifilm X-H2 will shoot 8K video. So why is it considered the stills oriented version? Isn’t 8K something videographer might also appreciate?

And if the Fujifilm X-H2S is supposed to be the video centric version, why is it the only one with a stacked sensor, allowing for crazy bursts with the electronic shutter and making it ideal for sports and wildlife photography?

The True Difference

We should stop making the differentiation between a “stills” and “video” camera.

Truth is, both, the X-H2S and the X-H2 are highly capable hybrid cameras.

If you need 8K video, then the X-H2 is for you.  But if 6K video is enough, you can also go with the X-H2S. As for stills, if you do lots of wildlife and sports, go with the stacked sensor X-H2S and it’s staggering 40 fps, but for general use and landscape photography, go with the non-stacked 40 megapixel X-H2.

It makes much more sense in my opinion to differentiate them in terms of speed vs resolution rather than video vs stills.

For ultimate speed, get the Fujifilm X-H2S. For a significant higher resolution, go with the Fujifilm X-H2.

We Need Both

Some might say Fujifilm should have launched only one X-H camera.

But to me two cameras make sense, as both cameras are different enough to justify their existence.

And it also simplifies the choice for us.

If you need all the virtues that come with a stacked sensor, get the X-H2S. If instead what you want is more resolution, the X-H2 is for you.

X-Trans Unlocked: Fujifilm X-H2S will Certainly be X-Trans, but Unknown if 40MP X-H2 is X-Trans or Bayer

X-H2S: Stacked and X-Trans

Now that we have told you that the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2 will not have a stacked sensor, another question has been automatically answered with 100% certainty: the Fujifilm X-H2S will have an X-Trans sensor.

So how can we be so sure about it?

Well, because back at the epic X summit in September, Fujifilm did announce that a new “stacked BSI X-Trans sensor” would be launched in 2022.

So, with the Fujifilm X-H2 not having stacked sensor, we are left with the Fujifilm X-H2S. Hence, we can be sure that the X-H2S will have an X-Trans CFA.

X-Trans Unlocked

Now, you know that I consider X-Trans a wonderful thing, but even more so if combined with a stacked sensor.

Why?

Because the stacked sensor can circumnavigate some of the challenges represented by the X-Trans CFA (mainly the 20-30% increased processing power needed), hence it would allow us to retain the image quality advantage of X-Trans without sacrificing on features and speed, where Bayer usually has advantages.

The power of X-Trans is about to get unlocked. :)

X-H2 with Bayer or X-Trans?

And what about the Fujifilm X-H2 with 40MP? Will it be X-Trans too?

Well, I don’t know yet.

What I know is that the higher the megapixel, the thinner the image quality advantage of X-Trans becomes (although an advantage will still remain there even at high megapixel). At least that is my understanding after having heard Fuji Guy Billy back in 2016 saying why Fujifilm went with Bayer CFA on the high resolution GFX cameras

But if one would go with X-Trans for image quality, Bayer has other important advantages (such as less power hungry, easier to implement more features, less expensive).

Personally I’d not be mad if it was a Bayer sensor. But if somehow Fujifilm would be able to make a 40MP X-Trans Fujifilm X-H2 work fast and pack tons of features in it, then I’d still love to have it in X-Trans and pay the extra money to get it over Bayer. But again, I’d be happy also with a Bayer sensor for the high res X-H2.

Anyway, I hope this question will not remain unanswered for too long. I am working on it and will let you know as soon as I can.

RUMOR: Fujifilm X-H2 with 40MP will be More Affordable than Fujifilm X-H2S with 26MP

One of the big questions regarding the Fujifilm X-H2S and Fujifilm X-H2 is how much they will cost.

Well, these are crazy times with the inflation going nuts, so to give a precise price now, especially on the Fujifilm X-H2, which will come only after the X-H2s, is not very easy, considering that Fujifilm has still enough time to make up its mind on the final price.

But here is what we can say for certain. According to our information:

  • we confirm that price of the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2 will be “below $2,500“
  • we can now say with 100% certainty that the 26MP Fujifilm X-H2S will cost MORE than the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2

In short: speed will cost you more than resolution!

We remind you that the Fujifilm X-H2S will have a stacked sensor, whereas the Fujifilm X-H2 won’t be stacked.

Fujifilm X-H2 with 40MP NOT STACKED Sensor Rumor is 100% Accurate

Ok, I have just shared the rumor about the high resolution 40 Megapixel Fujifilm X-H2 not having a stacked sensor.

There is a good amount of disbelief about this rumor, as most (but not FR) gave it for granted that also the high resolution Fujifilm X-H2 would have a stacked sensor.

Now, you know I don’t like to make any reliability ranking when I share a rumor. But given the situation, I thought I make an exception today.

So let me put this way: it is my final, confirmed and definitive answer that the Fujifilm X-H2 will have a 40MP non stacked sensor. I am 100% sure about this and there is no margin of error.

This means that if you love the X-H line and if you look for stacked sensor camera, waiting for the X-H2 is time wasted.

You’ll get what you need with the 26MP Fujifilm X-H2S coming on May 31.

FUJIFILM X Summit Announced for May 31 at 9AM EST: Fujifilm X-H2S (but not X-H2), XF150-600mmF5.6-8 (but not 56mmF1.2II) and More

For FujiRumors readers this does not come surprising, as we told you already on April 15 that Fujifilm will have an X summit on May 31.

Well, now Fujifilm has made it official and unveiled to the world that the Fujifilm X Summit will be held on May 31 at:

  • 9AM New York Time
  • 3PM Berlin Time

No further details, but thanks to FujiRumors we have a list of gear Fujifilm plans to launch in 2022.

What will surely come is the Fujifilm X-H2S, and very likely also the Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8, as this is just the perfect companion for the ultra fast 26MP stacked sensor Fujifilm X-H2S.

What will NOT be fully announced are the high resolution Fujifilm X-H2 (it will come later), the XF56mmF1.2II and maybe also other gear in the list below.

And of course, X summits often include some surprises that have never been rumored before, and Fujifilm also likes to show mock-ups of upcoming gear on such events.

RUMOR: Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2 MKII will NOT Be Announced on May 31 (but I confirm it’s Coming in 2022)

We know thanks to our sources that the big Fujifilm X summit will take place on May 31.

And we also made a list of gear that is rumored or also pre-announced to come in 2022:

However, we also told you that we don’t know if all of it will be announced on May 31.

In fact, we told you that for sure we won’t get the high resolution Fujifilm X-H2, as the announcement for that one is expected after the one of the Fujifilm X-H2S.

We now can also strike the Fujifilm XF56mm f/1.2 MKII from the X summit on May 31 list, as the announcement will happen later (we confirm it will happen in 2022).

I want to be clear….

What I am referring to is a full announcement, hence with full specs and pre-orders. That’s not going to happen for the Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2 MKII.

We have seen in past X summits that Fujifilm has shown mock-ups of future lenses and even future cameras without actually fully announcing them. So I don’t know if Fujifilm plans something like that also for the XF56mmF1.2 MKII. That would be atypical, as, looking at the past, Fujifilm usually does not tease MKII lenses, but I can’t rule out anything in this regard.

But hey, May 31 will be exciting also without the XF56/1.2MKII. So make sure to follow us on FujiRumors.

Is Fujifilm Losing Its Soul? Let’s Talk PSAM Dials! An Error or a Necessity?

When I posted my article about the top 10 failed Fujifilm cameras (and errors Fujifilm should avoid in future), of course some of you had a legit and often also well argued opinion on which cameras I should have included.

And one particular comment encapsulated nicely a fear that is spreading among the Fujifilm community.

The biggest error ! Loosing who you are! Creating PSAM cameras!

And the disappointment for PSAM dials arose again just recently, when we informed you that the Fujifilm X-H2S will have a PSAM dial too.

So what, is Fujifilm spamming us with PSAM dials?

And looking at it more broadly, is Fujifilm losing its retro soul?

Well, I think there is way too much drama around this topic. Even the most hardcore retro lover (like me) should enjoy the fact that Fujifilm is releasing cameras with PSAM dials.

Here is why.

  • Fujifilm has sold its soul to the mainstream market. They are ditching their lovely vintage style and operation to spam the market with more PSAM dial cameras.

LEAKED: Fujifilm X-H2S New Image Shows MCS Switch is Gone in Favor of FN Button

FujiRumors was able to get its hands on another leaked image of the Fujifilm X-H2S. The image is available only here at FujiRumors.

The image is clear enough to see that the classic MCS switch in front of the camera is gone, replaced by a button that will most likely work as an FN button.

So, while I am happy that the D-Pad has survived on the X-H2S, I am less happy about the removal of the MCS switch.

If I have to see it positively, having the MCS switch replaced by a FN button (which you can assign to have the same function of the MCS switch), makes sure that you’ll never inadvertently move the lever.

But the MCS switch is one of those little tactile touches I love on my Fujifilm cameras.

But again, there is now an FN button on the same position, which you can assign to work as MCS switch.

At least that real estate on the front left of the camera won’t remain empty wasted space, but will be an FN button there.
