Sigma vs Zeiss Touit X Mount: Why Sigma is Not Making the Same Error Zeiss Did

After we broke the rumors about the upcoming Sigma X mount autofocus lenses, there were some comments predicting for the Sigma X mount trinity the same faith of the Zeiss Touit X Mount Trinity (low sales).

Why?

Because the X mount Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN would be too close in terms of focal length and aperture to what Fujifilm is already offering, meaning the Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4, the Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.4 and the Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2.

Well, I don’t agree.

I mean, maybe I’d also have hoped for Sigma to offer us lenses that close some gaps in the current Fujinon X line-up. However, I can also understand that for Sigma it just makes sense to start with something they already have and adapt it for the Fujifilm X mount.

But I’d not be so pessimistic about the upcoming Sigma X mount trinity.

Look, the Zeiss Touit lenses had a price tag that was higher than the one of the competing XF Fujinon lenses (the XF14mmF2.8 and the XF35mmF1.4) but at the same did not offer necessarily a better image quality.

However, if Sigma keeps the same price tag they currently have for other mounts also for their X mount versions, then they’d come in at a more affordable price than the Fujinon lenses and still offer a very nice image quality.

This changes things quite a bit in favor of Sigma compared to Zeiss.

And in fact, one just has to look at the success of Viltrox AF X mount lenses, which are also close in terms of specs to existing Fujinon lenses, but still sell good because they are gently priced.

So, for now I’d not be so pessimistic.

It’s nice to see Sigma joining the X mount with whatever lenses they want. And then let’s hope that down the road they will offer more lenses, maybe also some that close gaps in the current X mount line-up.

Expected Price and Specs of Upcoming Fujifilm X Mount Sigma 16mmF1.4, 30mmF1.4 and 56mmF1.4 DC DN Contemporary

FujiRumors already informed you that the upcoming Sigma X mount autofocus lenses will be:

  1. Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
  2. Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
  3. Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary

Since not everybody is familiar with the Sigma system, and I already started to receive emails asking me if these were new lenses (pretty much as the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 was when it was launched for X mount), I feel I need to clarify that these Sigma DC DN lenses already exist for other mirrorless mounts.

So first here is a mini Sigma abbreviation guide:

  • DC: lenses designed for APS-C
  • DN: lenses designed for mirrorless
  • Contemporary: Featuring the very latest technology, and combining optical performance with compactness

The price range for the above mentioned lenses (for other mounts) goes from $339 to $479 depending on the lens and it remains consistent across the various mount options.

Hence, it is safe to assume that also the Fujifilm X mount version will cost about the same and also have basically the same specs.

So let’s take a closer look at them:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: BHphoto / AmazonUS / Adorama

  • 45mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
  • Two Aspherical Elements
  • One High-Refractive Index Element

  • Stepping Motor AF System

  • price $339

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: BHphoto / AmazonUS / Adorama

  • APS-C Format
  • 84mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
  • One SLD Element, Two Aspherical Elements
  • Super Multi-Layer Coating
  • Stepping Motor AF System
  • Weather-Sealed Construction
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • full product details and images
  • price $479

There is one more DC DN lens in the Sigma range, the new and lovely Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN, but if my sources are accurate, this lens will not be part of the Sigma X mount launch party. However, it should not break Sigma’s bank to offer that one for X mount too at a later stage. So let’s hope for that (not a rumor, just a hope of mine).

Sigma X Mount

It was Fujifilm’s biggest mistake in 10 years of X mount, but they finally fixed it in 2020: they opened X mount to third party autofocus lens manufacturers.

Since then, we got quite some new AF lenses and you can see the most updated list of X mount AF lenses here.

And latest since the Sigma CEO himself said that they are “thinking on how to satisfy Fujifilm customers“, we can be sure that Sigma is joining the X mount too.

Well, today FujiRumors can give you a few more details.

According to our sources, Sigma will start its X mount adventure by launching three (3) X mount autofocus lenses.

Here on FR we did launch a huge Sigma X mount wishlist survey in the past and your top three overall wishes were these ones.

IMPORTANT UPDATE Regarding Fujifilm X-H2 Teaser: Fujifilm Africa is Not an Official Fujifilm Account

A few days ago we reported how Fujifilm Africa shared on their Instagram page that the Fujifilm X-H2 is coming soon.

What a teaser, right?

Well, I have investigated and I can now say that the fujifilm_africa instagram account is not an official Fujifilm account. Yes, Kevin Mullins and other X photographers follow it, and I thought it is official. But is is not. And yet, if you like Africa and Fujifilm, you can always give it a follow.

Anyway, this is not an official teaser by Fujifilm. I feel I needed to make this clarification in order to be 100% accurate with you guys.

And look, right now when I am typing these words to inform you all, I checked again the account and I see they added “fan page” to their Instagram description, meaning it is run by a fellow Fujifilm lover who probably reads our rumors and looks forward to the Fujifilm X-H2 just as much as we do.

So the story is:

Fujifilm managers never teased anything regarding the Fujifilm X-H2.

Oh well, except for saying that…

Hm, it actually looks like Fujifilm said a lot already!
