EXCLUSIVE: Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 vs Fujinon GF32-64mmF4 Size Comparison

One of the most intriguing lenses Fujifilm will launch in near future (within 2021), is definitely the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6, a very affordable zoom for the Fujifilm GFX system.

To see which other lenses (and cameras) will be launched this year, but also in 2022, check out our rumored X/GFX 2021/2022 timeline.

But back to the GF35-70mm.

We already told you that the lens will have a collapsible design, similar to the one we find on the Fujinon XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6. This means that when you first turn the lens, you are not already zooming. You are just pushing out the lens. Only once pushed out, you can start zooming.

This sort of design helps to keep lens size smaller.

But how small will the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 be?

Well, thanks to indication of our sources, we can now share an approximate size comparison between the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 and the already existing and quite frankly stellar (and now hugely discounted) Fujinon GF32-64mmF4. You can see the comparison above.

Of course the rendering shows the lens in its smallest size possible.

This is approximate size comparison I made using an imaginary mock-up I made out of the rumors shared so far, so do not expect it to be a 100% super accurate size comparison. But it will help you to get an idea on what is about to come from Fujifilm.

Now, I own the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4 and love it. And I also love the fact that it has an aperture ring, which the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 won’t have. So no regrets here and I will happily stick with my GF32-64mmF4.

But the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 has also its strengths: a sensibly smaller size (as you can see above) and a much more affordable price tag.

I can see what Fujifilm is doing here, and as I said in this article, it makes a whole lot of sense, as it finally fixes the true anomaly in the G mount lens lineup.

So guys, that was it for today. But more juicy stuff will come ;).

Fujifilm’s Biggest Error is Now Fixed (and Waiting for Sigma)

It’s a rare thing…

it’s a rare thing that the entire FujiRumors community agrees on a certain matter.

But Fujifilm succeeded in this miracle!

How?

By categorically refusing to open their lens protocols to third party lens manufacturers.

And still in 2019 top Fujifilm managers insisted that there is no need to have Sigma, Tamron & Co on the X mount side of life.

I love you Fuji, but this was just the biggest error the management ever took, proven by the fact that’s it’s also the one decision the entire FR community disagreed with.

Well, Fujifilm finally fixed this error in 2020, by saying they open X mount to third parties.

Late, but better late than never.

And guess what is happening? Third party manufacturers are finally joining the X mount, attracted by the Fujifilm market share and facilitated by the open lens protocols (a deal breaker for Sigma for a long time).

So let’s see what is happening.

Cosina launched the Voigtländer Nokton 35mmF1.2 X, no autofocus, but with electronic contacts to provide Exif data and focus check.

Tokina launched a couple of X mount lenses.

Sigma is hinting to have lenses for X mount coming in 2021.

And the probably biggest news so far: Tamron will be launching the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for Fujifilm X in 2021.

And since we have Tamron officially on board now, I thought we could give a revival to our original Tamron X mount lenses wishlist, which we published back in 2020 here.

You can still vote the survey, but so far you top 10 Tamron wishes are:

  1. Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD / G2
  2. Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  3. Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD
  4. Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD
  5. Tamron SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD
  6. Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD
  7. Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  8. Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC (LD) Aspherical [IF]
  9. Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD
  10. Tamron SP AF 60mm F/2.0 Di II LD [IF] Macro 1:1

And given the increasing X mount autofocus offering, we launched the dedicated third party X autofocus lenses group here.

The Non-Love Story between DPReview and the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 Continues – Silver Award

DPReview has no love apparently for the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0. Let me explain.

The Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 was declared the worst lens of 2020 by DPRTV here due to the lens being soft and showing too much chromatic aberration. And now it got the silver award at DPReview.

Before we look at the negatives, here is what Rico wrote in the comments:

I have been using two copies of the 50mmF1 (pre-production and production), and both of them have been pretty sharp wide-open. I also did bokeh comparisons, and it easily beat the 50mmF2 at f/2.

It’s strange that DPR is recycling old sample images taken by DPR TV (who probably had a bad copy of the lens for their review) into a “field test” written by a different author who did not even take his own sample images with another lens.

Now let’s get into it.
