Focus On Glass: Fujinon XF 50-140mmF2.8 Even Better with Future X Bodies and Why no OIS on XF 16-55mmF2.8

We already reported in this post, about the first episodes of the Fujifilm series “Focus on Glass“, which included the XF8-16mmF2.8 and the GF30mmF3.5.

Now new episodes have been uploaded at Fujifilm Spain, this time about two lenses, that we can define the “workhorses” in the X mount lens lineup, the Fujinon XF16-55mmF2.8 and the Fujinon XF50-140mmF2.8.

It includes statements made by Fujifilm managers and engineers about those lenses, which I will report in written form here, to make you safe some time ;)

Fujinon XF50-140mmF2.8

  • no excuse is allowed for this lens:
    – autofocus has to be fast
    – image quality has to be impressive
    – weight has to be light
    – size has to be compact
    – it has to tick all boxes
  • it has outstanding resolution
  • a flawless lens
  • clear color reproduction
  • minimal chromatic aberration
  • Fujifilm is proud of the result
  • 23 glass elements inside with many ED lenses
  • the more the Fujifilm X bodies evolve, the more the potential of this lens is executed
  • an engineer says he can see its performance extended even further in future

Regarding the better performance in future, they probably refer to autofocus speed, but possibly also to sharpness. We know from this Fujifilm manager statement that Fujifilm X glass can resolve at least 32 megapixel, hence, Fujifilm might hint that the XF50-140mmF2.8 is one of those lenses that is currently underperforming on the 26 megapixel X-Trans sensor.

Fujinon XF16-55mmF2.8

  • in order to maximize optical performance, Fujifilm decided to remove OIS, it was not an easy decision
  • it’s a must have lens
  • you can attempt any photo shoot with this lens
  • a reliable partner
  • no excuses are allowed, when making a red badged lens
  • Fujifilm would give it 5 stars

I have been told in the past by my sources, that the optical performance at the wide end did not satisfy Fujifilm completely, hence they decided to remove OIS. At that point in time a strongly debated discussion, but now that Fujifilm offers cameras with IBIS, we can say that in the long term this was the right decision.

Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 Sample Images and Autofocus Demo Videos

The Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 will start shipping on April 21, as we reported here.

Of course there are photographers testing the lens, and Viltrox has re-shared all their sample images on Chinese facebook equivalent weibo.

I will share first the (google translated) feedback the various photographer gave, then their images and of course all the links to weibo.

  • Bearsce says: he overall feeling is pretty good except that the aperture is fully open and the dispersion is a bit large
  • Ares_chen says: this lens works really well, and the focusing speed is also very fast , Imaging sharpness and focus are not bad, there will be purple fringes under high light ratio

Last week Viltrox also shared some autofocus demo videos, which I share for your convenience also on my youtube channel.

Fujinon GF 80mmF1.7 and Fujinon GF 30mmF3.5 Size Comparisons

Fujinon G Mount Lenses – Size Comparison

The Fujifilm GFX community is salivating, looking at the latest G mount roadmap.

In fact, the new roadmap lists a stunning Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 lens, which in other sensor sizes is:

  • 63mm f/1.3 in full frame
  • 42mm f/0.9 in ASP-C, hence very close to Fuji’s new Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0

And to be clear: we apply the conversion to the f-stop, only to indicate the equivalent shallow depth of field, and not the light gathering capabilities of the lens itself, which remains the one mentioned on the lens (with the consequences we told you here).

We also find a lovely Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5 lens, which Fujifilm says is meant for street and landscape photography, be very sharp and also focus fast.

At the recent Fujifilm X Summit, Fujifilm showed some mockups and also disclosed more details.

I thought we catch up on that, sum up all we know, and add a few size comparisons based on the technical sketches Fujfiilm delivered during the event.

LEFT: GF110mm f/2 vs GF 80mm f/1.7 Size Comparison // RIGHT: GF 80mm f/1.7 mockup

Let’s start with the Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7.

Above you can see a size comparison provided by Fujifilm. The Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 is 20% smaller and will weight under 800g, as opposed to the GF110mm f/2, which weights 1010g.

The picture above also shows the GF80mm f/1.7 mounted on the Fujifilm GFX100.

Fujifilm gave us some indications on what the differences between both lenses are.

The Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 will have a very creamy and softer bokeh compared to the one on the Fujinon GF 110mm f/2. Different bokeh quality for different tastes.

Also, due to its more compact nature, the Fujinon GF80mm f/1.7 is good for outside and active shooting, whereas the GF110mm f/2 instead is better suited for studio.

I decided to compare the Fujinon GF80mm f/1.7 to its closes in terms of focal length, the Fujinon GF110mm f/2 and the GF63mm f/2.8.

Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5

Next in our list is the Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5.

In this case, we are going to compare it with the Fujinon GF23mm f/4 vs Fujinon GF 45mm f/2.8.

Sadly camerasize does not have the GF45/2.8 in their database, so I added it manually to the Fujifilm GFX50R.

Down below you see that it is just a tiny bit shorter than the GF23mm f/4

GF23 / GF 30 / GF45
GF23 / GF 30 / GF45

Both lenses are fantastic additions to the Fujinon G mount lineup.

What we want know thought, are the other ones we saw in the internal secret roadmap… but not so secret anymore, thanks to this leak ;).

How to Create a Fake Firmware 4.00 Rumor in less than 1 Minute :)

Yesterday a fake X-T3 firmware 4.00 screenshot was circulating on the web.

I told everybody it’s a fake, and nobody at Fujifilm is currently editing the firmware page to get it ready for an imminent release.

We also set things straight, by saying that a firmware update for the X-T3 is in the works, but it won’t be out before spring or maybe even summer.

But some of you still didn’t believe me, as the screenshot looked so realistic.

So, I took about 1 minute of my life, and created a fake firmware 4.00 myself, so you can see it is indeed a super easy fake to make.

I hope this ends the discussion one time and forever.

Guys, FujiRumors will always treat you with respect, and work hard to give you accurate information. So here you are in 100% fake clickbait rumor free zone ;).

Cure Your Bokeh Addiction… or When Too Much Background Blur Removes the Story and Creates Distraction

The Bokeh

We recently posted this story, about a Canon shooter, who tried Fujifilm for the first time, and there was so much she loved about it (starting from the fun using Fuji and the inspiration that comes with it), but one thing she missed: the bokeh she had with her Canon f/1.2 lenses.

So I thought to dedicate an own article to the “bokeh-discussion”, starting from two youtube videos below, that I have summed up for you.

And to give it all are more light and fun touch, I’ll share also the recent Camera Conspiracies video :).

I just remind you, that for the ultimate bokeh Fujifilm is going to release the Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0.

Top & Flop Blogger Moment

FLOP: You might know that my Twitter account was closed earlier this year and I lost contact with my 19,000 people strong Twitter community. It was really hard to see a community, that came together over 9 years of blogging, disappear overnight.

TOP: Well, turns out, that my biggest down lead to my biggest high, since, when all my hope had faded and some twitter bot confirmed my lifelong ban, luckily a fellow FR-reader jumped in and helped me to restore my Twitter account, giving me the biggest blogging-joy of the year. It’s just amazing, how much support I get from this community in moments of needs! You are awesome!

Most Used Gear

As a teacher, I have 2 full months of holiday in Summer. Usually I travel a lot during that period.

However, this year I had to financially recover from the expenses related to my wedding in May.

So, except for a 10 days trip in Croatia together with that annoying SonyAlphaRumors guy ;), I did not travel anywhere.

I stayed here, surrounded by my stunning mountains and my fun local traditions.

I hiked around, climbed some mountains, and as a natural consequence focused mostly on landscape photography.

At the end, the Fujinon XF10-24 and XF18-135 turned out to be my most used lenses of the year, with the 27/2.8 and 35/1.4 being the top primes. Of course mounted on my X-E3, although I did use also the X-T1.

Happy New Year 2020

So, 2020 is finally here…

Now you guys promise me to keep up having fun with your photography, and I promise you to put my best into FR also in 2020.

A wonderful, healthy and happy 2020 to everybody out there reading these lines.
