Fujifilm X-H2S vs Canon R6 vs Nikon Z9 Autofocus Comparison – Canon R6 is BEATEN and Nikon is CAUGHT

We should keep in mind one thing:

The Fujifilm X-H2S is still in pre-production.

Fujifilm engineers are constantly and restlessly fine tuning, adjusting, tweaking, correcting, improving the firmware until almost the last day before it will ship to customers in mid-July.

This means: whoever tested the camera in the last few weeks, was actually playing around with a potentially buggy camera, and indeed some reviewers notices some bugs here and there (and reported them to Fujifilm).

But this also means, we can’t really make any conclusions about this camera in regards to IBIS, autofocus, image quality and what not.

The fact that it is just pre-production was highlighted also by Taylor Jackson in his Fujifilm X-H2S coverage, and yet, he seems to be impressed already by its autofocus, so much so that he says it is noticeably better than on his Canon EOS R6 and very likely on par with his Nikon Z9.

So why do I share this review in a dedicated article?

Well, because so far it is the only review I have found where a guy actually tests the X-H2S side by side with other cameras, meaning under the same conditions, same light, same subject, same everything. And we can actually see the different cameras tracking stuff side by side.

So what are his findings? Let’s find out in the summary and videos down below

  • The Fujifilm X-H2S picked up subjects at significantly further distances than his Canon EOS R6
  • he was not expecting it, but autofocus is fast, sticky and confident
  • you can see the eye AF picking up the eye even through dark sunglasses
  • a quick test with a person running towards the camera at 40fps – all images were in focus
  • Canon R6 vs Fujifilm X-H2S
  • he is impressed by how far eye and in general human detection works on the X-H2S
  • at far distances the Canon goes around focusing on various stuff. Fujifilm sticks on the person
  • Fujifilm camera more accurate autofocus than Canon R6
  • then he went to Island to photograph Puffins, and the camera detects their face
  • he shows 2 people very very far away on an endless beach, and the X-H2S picks up their faces (which is really just a few pixels on the screen)
  • Canon R6 vs Fujifilm X-H2 Indoors AF tracking
  • in short: the X-H2S wins

He also shared a Fujifilm X-H2s wedding photography Behind the Scenes video, which I will also share down below.

In the wedding video he compares it to the Nikon Z9 (which he has used really a lot) for indoors wedding photography. Here are his findings:

  • the Fujifilm X-H2S gets very very close if not on par with the Nikon Z9
  • it’s crazy to say it’s on par considering the Fujifilm camera is half the price of the Nikon Z9
  • Reasons to get it for wedding: physical size of Fuji kits, costs a lot less than other stacked sensor cameras, great color sciences (but this one is subjective)
  • he will compare it to the Canon R3 in a later video (and FujiRumors will report about it)

But again, it’s pre-production. So don’t take anything here as the final verdict.

Fujifilm GFX100S vs Canon R6: Is Medium Format Worth It? This Guy Says “No” (and My Thoughts)

Alex Barrera wonders: is medium format worth it?

In an attempt to figure out the answer, he shared a blind test using the following gear:

In the blind test, all images marked with “A” belong to one camera and all images marked with “B” belong to the other camera.

I did my the test myself, and honestly, right at the very first image comparison (see image below) I thought “oh please let “A” be the the Fujifilm GFX100S“. And lucky me, camera “A” is indeed the Fujifilm GFX100S.

Megapixel had not much to do with my preference. It’s a compressed youtube video, how could that matter. Megapixel matter more when you work with the files in post, or when you print.

My preference had more to do with the output of the Fujinon GF80mmF1.7 lens itself, which is very similar in terms of shallow depth of field to the RF 50mm f/1.2 L, but the bokeh looked just more pleasing in my eyes. Then there are other subjective elements like the colors (Provia in this case) and so forth. Overall, I mostly picked A (GFX100S).

But what about Alex? Is medium format worth it?

No, it’s not worth it, and here is why:

DPReview 2020 Gear Awards: Canon Dethrones Sony, Fujifilm X-S10 Triumph but did they Forget the GFX Lenses?

Best Gear 2020

DPReview awarded the best gear of 2020.

Lots of what they say makes sense, but I don’t really agree with everything. For example, the Fujifilm X-T4 is second in the mid-range ranking behind the Canon R6, which costs $800 more. For me, the Fujifilm X-T4 is so much better value for money.

Worth to notice, Canon grabs some of the most prestigious top spots, which in the past were usually in solid Sony hands.

And to me totally unsurprising: the little and affordable Fujifilm X-S10 is not only the best entry level camera, but it also grabs the second spot as overall top product 2020.

I am saying it since I’ve shared the first rumors: Fujifilm is doing lots of things right with the X-S10. If you don’t need weather sealing or 2 SD card slots, it’s by far the best value for money camera you can buy.

Last but not least the glorious Fujifilm X100V, frankly without any competition in the fixed lens compact camera segment.

What I do not get is the lack of any GFX lens. Not only the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 or Fujinon GF45-100mmF/4 have not been awarded, but they did not even enter the shortlist of candidates.

In my opinion the GF lenses would have highly deserved a top spot. But I guess the GFX system is not really on DPR’s radar due to rather limited market share, and it’s easier to award gear that is also a big hit at the box office.

Let’s go through the list.

Curiosity: Fujifilm X-T4 has Better Video Dynamic Range than Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6

Gerald Undone has tested the Canon R5 and Canon R6.

His review focuses mostly on video, so check it out if you are interested in the new Canon cameras (which, as we said, are Canon’s declaration of the death of DSLR’s).

Overall the review is not really that positive, as the new Canon R5 and R6 have some serious limitations, and show one more time that putting stuff into cameras just to decorate the specs sheet, but then making them unusable in real life use, is not a smart way to deal with customers, and this might backfire terribly.

But hey, we Fuji shooters have already a lot of stuff to worry and struggle with in our own little photography X/GFX space, that we won’t talk about the issues with the Canon EOS R5 and R6 here.

But one thing I’d like to mention it.

At minute 6:09, Gerald shares the results of his video dynamic range testings, and he says that the APS-C Fujifilm cameras (such as X-T3 and X-T4) beat the full frame Canon EOS R5 and R6 in this area.

Also, as said in another video shared down below, the Fujifilm X-T4 exhibits less flickering at higher shutter speeds compared to the Canon EOS R5. Also in this video, they confirm the Fujifilm X-T4 is winning in terms of video dynamic range. Since the Canon R5 costs 3 times a Fuji body, he would have hoped for better results.

Not bad for the little (and much more affordable) Fuji’s ;).

So, that’s the little good Fuji news. Now back to complaining about the lack of X-T3 firmware and Co. ;)
