Unconfirmed Speculations: Fujifilm Working on Ultimate Fujifilm X Sports Camera – Should Fujifilm Really Make it? (POLL)

The Ultimate Fujifilm X

Michael The Maven published his full Fujifilm XF200mm f/2 video review. He praises this lens a lot and says it’s a step above anything Fujifilm has ever made so far.

In fact, he says the XF200mmF2 is so spectacular, that it does not make sense mounted on any current Fujifilm camera.

This is why he speculates that Fujifilm will release a professional APS-C flagship sports camera in not so distant future aimed to compete with the Sony A9.

Déjà-vu anyone?

Back in early 2017 (rumors of March 3, March 14 and April 14), we told you how Fujifilm was planing “the ultimate Fujifilm X“, a feature packed APS-C hybrid stills/video camera with IBIS, that could cost around $3,000 (if not more).

However, Fujifilm hesitated if such a camera would be successful, hence vastly revised the project (rumors of July 12, July 17 and July 24).

The result was the Fujifilm X-H1, an ergonomically fantastic camera with IBIS and a new ninja-shutter, but with the core specs and battery of the Fujifilm X-T2.

Rumors and Poll

Let me say it clearly: I have no indication at the moment that would allow me to say with confidence that Fujifilm revived plans for the ultimate Fujifilm X. Hence I can in no way confirm Michael’s speculation.

All that is sure is that Fujifilm had such plans in the past (2017), and Fujifilm can put that same project on the “to-do” list anytime again, just like it happened with the Fujinon XF33mm f/1.0, another project Fujifilm froze in for a few years, and then revived later on (also thanks to the pressure the FujiRumors community made).

Coincidence wants that a few days ago FR-reader Nathan contacted me with a survey suggestion, that fits perfectly into today’s article. Nathan wrote:

I would like to purpose a simple survey for your readership. Should Fujifilm create a Fujifilm X-T3Pro to compete with the Sony a7000

IMHO, a Fujifilm X-H2 with latest technology and bigger battery below $2,000 (vertical grip included) would be more than enough to satisfy the needs of wildlife and sport photographers and there is more urgent need for something like the Fujinon XF400mm f/4 to attract more of them into the X system.

But let me know what you think in the comments down below and feel free to vote the survey on if you would you like (or not) Fujifilm to revive plans for the ultimate feature packed (and expensive) Fujifilm X.

Fujifilm X-H1 with XF 33mm f/1.0 vs Panasonic S1 with Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 Size Comparison

Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.0

Today I was curious to know how the Fujifilm X-H1 with Fujinon XF33mm f/1.0 would compare in terms of size to the brand new full frame Panasonic S1 with Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4.

So I grabbed one of the real life pictures of the XF33mm f/1.0 I took at Photokina 2018 and made an approximate comparison.

If the final production XF 33mmF1.0 will have the same size of the mock-up I have seen at Photokina, then the Fujinon XF33mm f/1.0 will be smaller than the Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4.

Let’s hope it will also be cheaper, since the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 comes with a hefty price tag.

When it comes to camera bodies, the Panasonic S1 is noticeably bigger than the Fujifilm X-T3, X-H1 and also other full frame cameras like the Sony A7III.

My guess is that the bigger body is needed for proper heat dissipation to allow 4K/60 and avoid overheating. This is probably also the reason why no Sony A7 camera currently offers 4K60p.

But despite the larger body, the Panasonic has still to do compromises in terms of 4K/60P compared for example to the Fujifilm X-T3.

  • Fujifilm X-T3: 4K/60 with only 1.18x crop without line skipping
  • Panasonic S1: 4K/60 with 1.5x crop (basically APS-C size)
  • Panasonic S1R: 4K/60 with line skipping

In our article about the several advantages of APS-C sensors over full frame, we explained how smaller sensors are faster to read out, hence generate less heat and allow for features like the blackout less EVF at 30fps continuous shooting, and, in this case, a better 4K/60 readout.

The Fujifilm X-H1 has no 4K/60, but this is a limitation that comes from the older and slower X Processor Pro.

So, every sensor size has its advantages. It’s now up to Fujifilm to fully take advantage of them. And I expect especially the Fujifilm X-H2 to raise new standards and be a clear step ahead of the competition.

Belgian Store Teases FUJIFILM MYSTERY EVENT on March 30

Fujifilm Mystery Event

Belgian store Art & Craft is teasing a “Fujifilm Mystery Event” on March 30 on their facebook page here.

We can not say anything about it yet, but we promise you: it is worth a visit! Photographer & Fuji Ambassador Ioannis Tsouloulis will be ready that day to explain the whole event & answer all your questions.”

FujiRumors broke the news that the Fujifilm X-T30 will be announced on February 14, so March 30 could eventually be the shipping start. And before you start again: nope, Fujifilm X-H2 is not coming that soon.

Or it could be something completely different, from the rumored major Fujifilm X-T3 firmware update to not yet rumored Fujifilm gear.

Dedicated X-T Zones

Competition Compared: Sony a6400 vs Fujifilm X-T20 vs Fujifilm X-T3 vs Sony a6500 vs Fujifilm X-T30

Sony A6400

Sony announced the Sony A6400, which, given its price and features, we can consider the Fujifilm X-T30 competitor.

The Fujifilm X-T30 will be announced February 14.

Above you can find a specs sheet comparison between the Sony A6400, Fujifilm X-T20, Sony A6500, Fujifilm X-T3 as well as an initial list of Fujifilm X-T30 specs, assuming it has the same sensor/processor of X-T3.

Animal Face/Eye Detection

Fujifilm already has it! :)

In fact, this forgotten Fujifilm digital camera offered “pet detection” for cats and dogs already 8 years ago.

Of course Sony’s solution is much more sophisticated and potentially very useful for wildlife photographers, so let’s hope Fujifilm will catch up on that feature, improve and extend it, and bring it to us Fuji X series lovers via Kaizen love soon.

New Autofocus

The showpiece of the Sony A6400 is definitely the new autofocus system, but we have to wait real life reviews to see if it really lives up to the hype Sony created with its promo videos.

If so, then it’s definitely impressive.

The Fujifilm X-T30 will feature the new sensor and processor of the Fujifilm X-T3, hence we can expect an excellent performer in terms of autofocus and eye-AF. Can’t wait to see the first real life comparisons with Sony’s new AF system.

Dealbreaker Selfie Screen?

The Sony A6400 also targets vloggers. However, with an on camera microphone attached, you can no longer see yourself in the upwards tilting selfie screen. A possible dealbreaker for vloggers.

If the Fujifilm X-T30 has a selfie screen, then it could be the one of the Fujifilm X-T100, which I consider a brilliant solution for hybrid stills/video shooters, except for one downside, as we told you here.

You guys already told us which kind of tilt screen you prefer (for Fujifilm X-H2). Check out and vote the poll here.

Lack of APS-C Lenses

If Sony’s wants to create an attractive APS-C system, they need to add several high quality APS-C lenses, but sadly Sony didn’t announce any new APS-C lens.

To cover the gaps in their APS-C lens line-up, you must get the more expensive and bigger FE-mount full frame lenses, which kind of destroys the purpose of buying into APS-C.

The Fujifilm X-T30 has on its side a terrific lens line-up specifically designed for APS-C. You find from big, heavy and expensive glass to small, portable and afforable lenses. A mature system.

Sony Kaizen

The probably most exciting part of the recent announcements, was Sony’s promise to add the new autofocus system as well as new features (interval recording) via firmware update to the Sony A9, Sony A7III and Sony A7rIII.

Let’s hope Sony will permanently adopt Fujifilm’s Kaizen strategy, since customers will benefit so much from it (companies a little bit less, since they hold off people from upgrading more frequently to newer models).

Fujifilm X-Pro3 (and Fujifilm X200?) Coming in 2019 According to Techradar

Fujifilm 2019 Techradar Predictions

According to techradar predictions, the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will come in 2019. And they seem pretty confident about that, since they write here:

We’ve pooled together what we know for sure with our predictions for the next twelve months.”

Less likely, but also a possibility according to techradar is the Fujifilm X100F successor (may it be called Fujifilm X200 or Fuji X100V or anything else).

If techradar is accurate, this means that Fujifilm changed their usual camera-refresh cycle, and that they will not skip one sensor/processor generation with the Fujifilm X-Pro3, as they did with the X-Pro2.

Here on FujiRumors we have already shared Fujifilm X-Pro3 concepts and wish lists.

Oh, and did you know that the Fujfiilm X-T30 is just around the corner? ;)

Fujifilm X-T30 To be Released First Quarter 2019

Fujifilm X-T30

A trusted source told me (thanks), that the Fujifilm X-T30 will be released in the first quarter of 2019 (January-March).

This pretty much fits with what we expected in our Fujifilm X camera replacement timeline, where we speculated, based on Fuji’s camera refresh-cycle, when the Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-Pro3, Fujifilm X-E4 and Fujifilm X200 (or X100V) could be released.

DPReviewTV Crop Sensor Comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 Beats Nikon D500, Olympus EM-1 MK II and Panasonic G9

Chris and Jordan just released roundup/buyers guide for non-full frame shooters.

They look at the Fujifilm X-T3, Nikon D500, Olympus EM-1 MK II and Panasonic G9 and try to figure out which camera is better for landscapes, street, sports/wildlife, portrait photography and video.

SPOILER ALERT: The Fujifilm X-T3 ends on top in all categories but one :).

Chris starts by saying that:

  • APS-C and M43 offer a lot of versatility and can handle all kinds of photography
  • Full frame cameras are more specialized tools in a lot of ways

LANSCAPES

  1. Fujifilm X-T3 wins, due to highly effective APS-C sensor and great dynamic range. Excellent lenses. By a hair the winner
  2. Olympus EM-1 MKII and Panasonic G9 are on par. Have multishot pixel shift
  3. Nikon D500 not made for landscape, lower resolution sensor and big body. Not so portable

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Fujifilm X-T3. Sexiest looking body. Dial controls very instinctual. Crazy fast AF. Eye AF is great. APS-C image quality better than M43
  2. Panaosnic G9 very close to Olympus. Better viewfinder and faster single AF, better eye AF
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Nikon D500 is big and bulky. Slow live view AF

SPORT/WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Nikon D500 offers by far the most lens choices. Rugged and stable DSLR body. Best autofocus in the world
  2. Fujifilm X-T3 has some great lenses like the XF100-400 and new XF200mmF2. Insanely fast AF. Very capable sports and wildlife camera
  3. Panaosnic G9
  4. Olympu EM-1 MKII

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Fujifilm X-T3 is the clear winner. Great lenses. They care about APS-C lenses. Legendary color science with great skin tones. Great AF and vastly improved eye-AF
  2. Nikon D500
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Panaonic G9

VIDEO

  1. Fujifilm X-T3. Terrific video specs and Eterna profile is awesome. No IBIS and better battery life. But Fujifilm X-H2 will fix that. Fujifilm X-T3 is best hybrid video/still camera overall
  2. Panasonic G9
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Nikon D500

Overall, Fujifilm X-T3 is the way to go in the crop sensor world.

Which Older Fujinon X Mount Lenses Should Fujifilm Update Next? POLL

Fujinon XF Mark II

About 2 years ago, I asked you guys which APS-C lenses Fujifilm should make next.

Your response was overwhelming, and you recommended thousands of lenses. I meticulously collected all your suggestions, and made a 30 lenses poll out of them.

The rest is history: as you can see from the results here, you guys vote the XF33mmF1.0 followed by the XF16-80mmF4 as your most wanted lenses, which are exactly the lenses Fujifilm recently added to their X mount roadmap.

Today I’d launch another poll.

This time it’s not about completely new lenses, but about which “older” Fujinon lenses Fujifilm should update.

What does “update” mean?

Mainly it means:

I debated if I should include the XF16-55mmF2.8 and XF90mmF2, which I know many would like to have OIS. But I decided not to include them, since the workaround is to use Fujifilm X-H1 and future Fujifilm X-H2 with IBIS. And who knows if down the road there will be more IBIS camera bodies. Check out the Fujifilm X Camera replacement timeline here.

I will be very cruel to you guys and give you only 1 option to vote :)

Happy voting… and may Fujifilm listen also this time.
