Barack Obama’s White House Photographer Pete Souza Shares the Gear he Uses, his Top 5 Lenses and Talks also Fujifilm X-Pro2

We already know that Pete Souza, Obama’s White House photographer, also uses a Fujifilm X-Pro2. We reported about it here.

Now Pete shared a video about the gear he uses on his instagram (video below), and at the end he also talks briefly about the Fujifilm X-Pro2.

  • cameras are just tools. They all work well. You just have to make a decision yourself on what kind of gear you want use
  • in the White House, he worked with the Canon 5D series
  • his lens trinity: 35mm,50mm and 135mm [in the Fuji world it would be the XF23mm, XF35mm and XF90mm]. Occasionally he uses also an 85mm [the XF56mm in the Fuji world]
  • he also has a flash for posed backlit portraits photos
  • in the white house, he used Canon, he felt was the quietest. Nikon was as good if not better, but Canon was more silent in quiet mode than Nikon, that’s why he got the Canon
  • in 2012/2013 Canon released the second version of the 24-70mm, which was so good and much sharper than the first version, that he started to use it more. This was his primary lens when he photographed outside. He also used the 70-200mm when he was outdoor.
  • now he still uses basically the same gear
  • he purchased the Fujifilm X-Pro2 with XF 23mm f/1.4 lens
  • the X-Pro2 is a great camera to use for example in very silent situations. The camera has no mirror, so it can shoot completely quiet. He was able to shoot in studio while artists were singing, because it is totally silent

Not only Fujifilm, but of course every mirrorless camera is just ideal for silent shooting.

Fujifilm’s New Coronavirus Test can Produce Results in 2 Hours

Fujifilm announced that they developed a new fast test for Coronavirus. The New York Times writes:

The SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR Detection kit will be able to deliver results for the virus that causes COVID-19 faster than existing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which presently take four to six hours, the company said.

Fujifilm said the new COVID-19 test will be released on April 15 in their press release (machine translated PDF)

I live here in Italy, and here there is a lot of talk about the urgent need for a fast, simple and affordable test to diagnose COVID-19. Many companies are working on it and I am happy to see Fujifilm is on it, too.

Fujifilm Issues Official Statement Regarding Fujifilm X100V Overheating Reports

Last month we reported about a Fujifilm X100V overheating test made by Andrew.

He tested his Fujifilm X100V under a variety of situations and here are his findings:

  • for stills: In real world photographing there is nothing to be concerned about. He got the yellow overheating warning only after 600 continuous shots in combination with 100/105 Fahrenheit (37/40 Celsius) room temperature
  • for video: after 12 minutes 4K shooting he got overheating warning. So X100V is not a good camera to shoot longer 4K video clips

Fujifilm now issued an official statement regarding the heat generation and they seem to confirm Andrew’s findings, as Fujifilm says:

When the X100V is used in a continuous manner (such as with continuous video shooting) or when used in a high temperature environment or direct sun light, a user may feel the grip become noticeably hot, due to heat generation within the camera’s electric circuit board and battery.

Now, I doubt people who buy the Fujifilm X100V usually shoot 600+ continuous images under 105 Fahrenheit or longer 4K video clips. If you do so, the X100V wasn’t probably the camera for your needs, anyway.

But if you get the overheating warning much earlier than in Andrew’s test, then definitely contact your local Fujifilm support and ask for a fix.

Down below the official Fujifilm statement.

But bfore that, here is what a FR-reader said in the comments here:

I purchased an 100V through Amazon.ca on 5 April. The vendor contacted me today: while they have stock they could not fulfill my order as Fuji had released a recall on the 100V by serial number based on the overheating issue. The dealer told me that Fuji would not be issuing a recall to customers at this time as their factory and refurb facilities are closed during this crisis.
