Post X Summit: APS-C X Glory in 2022, Fujifilm X-H2 Confusion, Roadmap Lenses Analyzed, Fujinon XF56mmF1.2II, GF20-35mm Details & More

What a launch that was.

And just like after every launch, there are answers, questions, confusions, hopes, dreams and more.

I will deliberately skip all the stuff you certainly know about. The firmware update announcements for GFX100/S, the specs of the new gear and more. I prefer to clarify, elaborate and add some details coming our from yesterday’s event and that either passed unnoticed or created potential confusion.

At the end, my short take on the event.

  • Patrick, you said there will be an XF56mmF1.2 II coming 2022, but the latest X mount roadmap does not show it

You have no idea how many emails I am getting with this question today :).

Don’t worry guys. The Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 II will come in 2022. Fujifilm does not insert all lenses in the roadmap. The latest example was the XF27mmF2.8 R WR, which just hit the market without ever being on any roadmap.

Trust me, in 2022 the MKII is coming.

  • We know what sensor the Fujifilm X-H2 will have!

Yes, and no.

First of all keep in mind that Fujifilm never mentioned the Fujifilm X-H2. It’s only thanks to FujiRumors that we know that the next X series camera to introduce a new sensor and processor will be the Fujifilm X-H2. A rumor recap below.

So technically we know only that a new sensor is coming. And we also don’t know the time frame for that.

But yes, it will be the X-H2.

However, you guys also know that there will be two Fujifilm X-H2 cameras. Will both feature an X-Trans BSI stacked sensor? And if so, what will be the other differences?

So there is still some confusion here… confusion that FujiRumors is going to dissipate soon enough ;).

Let’s move on.

  • Is Fujinon XF35mmF1.4 R now discontinued as some “rumors” said?

Oh my gosh, I had a good laugh when I read that fake rumor on the web. Of course it is not. And finally also Jonas Rask, Fuji Guy Billy and many others repeated in their first looks that the XF35mmF1.4 is here to stay.

  • Fujinon GF20-35mm but which aperture?

You might remember how back in 2017 I have shared an internal Fujifilm G mount roadmap.

Everything in that roadmap came to light, everything but the GF20-36mm.

Well, it was a long wait, but now we have it. With a slight difference, it will be Fujinon GF20-35mm instead of GF20-36.

But what aperture will it have?

Well, according to our leaked roadmap, the original plan was a f3.5-4.5 lens, so it could well be a Fujinon GF20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 at the end.

But keep in mind that during the presentation Fujifilm remarked several times that they want to keep this lens compact and portable, and first mockups you can see in our X summit coverage definitely show a lovely sized lens. I don’t know if for the sake of size Fujifilm will make it a bit slower. However, their target is definitely an f/3.5-4.5 lens.

  • Fujinon GF55mm f/1.7 and GF tilt shift – and More Details?

Not many.

But we did share images of mockups here.

What we can see is that similar to the GF80mmF1.7, the GF55mmF1.7 will not have a linear motor (saves size) and a filter size of 77.

The tilt shift lens is currently planed as Fujinon GF30mm F4 R TS with a 105 filter size.

  • Conclusion

I think it was a great event, that gave us good hints on which direction Fujifilm is taking. And most importantly, it shows that Fujifilm is extremely committed to both the X and GFX series, which got basically the same coverage during the event (5 minutes more for the GFX system in a one hour video).

And by ending their X summit with sensor hints for the next APS-C sensor generation, they wanted to set a clear signal that even though 2021 was more of a GFX year in terms of released gear, 2022 will see the X series come back in full power and glory.

And trust me, I know what I talk about… and if I was you, I’d always keep an eye on FujiRumors, as you might learn some very interesting stuff ;).

My Thoughts on the September 2 Announcements and What Would You Like Fujifilm to Surprise You With Tomorrow?

So, very soon, on September 2 at 9AM New York time, Fujifilm will have a major announcement day.

The gear that will surely come is this one:

But as you know, X summit can always contain surprises that have never been rumored before.

So the question is, what would you like to get surprised with on September 2?

And just briefly, my quick thoughts on the gear to be announced tomorrow.

  • Fujifilm GFX50SII

Great move. Using the same design of GFX100S saves tons of R&D. Making GFX more affordable is of crucial importance. If there is the AF boost Fujifilm promises, then this will be a big hit. But as I wrote on my GFX100S hands on, retro vintage dials are just more fun for me to use, so I hope Fujifilm will also continue to give us different options in terms of form factor.

  • GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6

All good on specs (and really lovely from the leaked images). As I wrote already, it fixes the true anomaly in the G mount lens system. However, also here, I love aperture rings. This one has none. So I’ll stick with my GF32-64mmF4.

  • Fujifilm X-T30II

After the X-T30II specs leaked, some said that the X-T30II is slightly bigger than the original X-T30. But no, it is not. It’s exactly the same body size. The X-T30II is more or less just a firmware update as the Fujifilm X-E2S was for the Fujfiilm X-E2. The best news around this camera, is that we now can hope for major X-T30 firmware update, as also the X-E2 got the same firmware feature of the X-E2s at some point.

  • Fujinon XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR and XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR

Faster autofocus (linear motor), better build (weather sealing), capable to resolve more megapixel (for future higher megapixel cameras). This was not only a good move by Fujifilm, but a necessary one. You can read the full specs for both lenses here. Especially considering how popular these two focal lengths are, Fujifilm had to release some absolute stunners. And that’s what they are!

  • Meh or Wow?

Maybe we don’t get an exciting new camera with brand new sensor. Maybe we don’t get a totally surprising new lens (oh, where are you XF150-600), but the Fujifilm X Summit of tomorrow, September 2 at 9AM New York time is a very well thought out step forward by Fujifilm. Everything (except for the X-T30II) makes sense and will contribute to the growth of the X and GFX system.

And as I said above, I can’t remember a Fujifilm X summit that has not surprised us, either with some prototypes to show, development announcements and what not.

So, again, drop down below what you’d like to be surprised with tomorrow.

LEAKED: Fujifilm GFX50SII Images

Do you remember what I told you a few weeks ago?

I told you that the leaked images of the Fujifilm GFX50SII will be the most boring ever, as it will look identical to the Fujifilm GFX100S.

Well, now nokishita spotted some images of the Fujifilm GFX50SII at a certification institute.

As I said: identical. So identical, that Fujifilm had to print “GFX50SII” on the side to make sure you won’t mix up the cameras ;).

Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will Weight “Less Than Half” than GF32-64mmF4

GF35-70 mock-up (not the real lens)

DON’T MISS IT: September 2 at 9AM New York Time – Fujifilm X Summit and Live Blog on FujiRumors

Lots, if not everything, has already leaked here on FujiRumors about the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.

We know about the collapsible lens design, we know about its size (see above), we know it will not have OIS and no aperture ring, we know its price.

Another tidbit, though, we can add today, is that the Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 will weight less than half than the one Fujinon G mount lens I own and I am totally in love with as it is a prime lens that can zoom: the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR (which weights 875g).

I see what Fujifilm is trying to do here.

I mean, how the heck can any zoom lens compete with the stellar GF32-64?

Certainly the GF32-64 is unbeatable in terms of image quality. I mean, have you seen the image I’ve shared of the village I live in and I did a massive crop and you could still clearly recognize the curtains on my sleeping room? And the lovely pop it has even when shot af f/5.6?

If you can’t beat it in terms of image quality, then beat it in almost everything else: make it much smaller, much lighter and much more affordable, and it will have a chance to carve out its niche among Fujifilm GFX shooters.

I personally will stick with the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4. Mainly because I already own it, and because I used it on a 6 hours hike recently. I packed with my GFX100S in my small Camslinger Outdoor bag (yep, it still fits in that small bag !!) and hiked no problem with it.

So for now I don’t see the need for the GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6, although having such a light and compact G mount zoom would certainly be a temptation for those looking to make their GFX system as portable as it gets, maybe in combination with the super small GF50mmF3.5 prime.

GF 35-70 Rumor Recap

Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 to Cost $999 (Lens Only) and $500 (Kit Price)

According to information we have received, the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will cost $999. However, you can get it for $500 if purchased in kit with a GFX body.

This makes it the most affordable G mount lens along with probably the next lens I’ll buy for my GFX100S, the Fujinon GF50mmF3.5.

And you have no idea how tempted I am by the GF50mmF3.5. Just don’t tell my wife about it ;).

To Be Announced on September 2

Fujifilm GFX50SII Rumor Recap

Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6

Don’t Worry: Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 is Weather Sealed

FujiRumors told you already back in March (!!!) that Fujifilm will launch the Fujifilm GFX50SII.

And over all these months, we have leaked, price, specs, release date and more.

We have also told you that, along with the Fujifilm GFX50SII, Fujifilm will launch a new and affordable zoom lens, the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6.

When we leaked the first details (no aperture ring, $500 kit price, etc), some FR-readers were sure that this would be the G mount equivalent of the Fujinon XC lenses, hence just a plastic mount and possibly not even weather sealing, in order to keep it as cheap as possible.

But that’s not correct.

The Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will have a metal mount and, that’s today’s rumor, according to our sources it will also be weather sealed!
