Fujifilm to Launch Fujinon GF35-70mm Lens for $500 (kit price)

Long we have rumored an affordable G mount zoom lens by Fujifilm coming in the second half 2021.

Now we have an important update.

According to our sources, the lens should be a Fujinon GF35-70mm.

As we told you recently, the price of this lens is of $500 when sold in kit with a camera body.

DPRTV: Fujifilm’s 5 Best Film Simulations

Fujifilm film simulations are more than just cool names for camera profiles.

Film simulations are the art of the colors that Fujifilm cultivates since decades, so far that the guy, who developed the original Fujifilm film stock already 50 years ago, still works at Fujifilm and is now in charge of crafting the film simulations.

So, colors are a serious thing for Fujifilm and you can see what you can do with them over at our Fujifilm film simulation group.

Now DPRTV published a video, where they go over what they consider the 5 best Fujifilm film simulations.

  1. Monochrome: He prefers it over Acros.
  2. Provia: Standard camera mode. Good standard profile. Does not push things too far. Great skin tones.
  3. Classic Neg: Great for street photography. Distorts reality, but not in a gimmicky way. Great for street scenes, knocks shadows down and makes street scenes look very dramatic, takes away some color and gives a nice vintage look. Aged, rugged look.
  4. Velvia: great for landscapes. Gives contrast and vibrancy. Can add some punchy drama to colors that are faded and muted. Adds a bit of magenta to blue skies, which can be really pleasing in landscape photos. Not great for skin tones
  5. Nostalig Neg: available only on GFX100S and GFX100. Mimics that classic American film stock from the 70s (Kodachrome etc.). Lower contrast but still rich saturation, warm colors.

For Video:

  • Eterna: For video an almost perfect profile. Very easy to grade. When he shoots high contrast scenes, he shoots F-Log, but in post he will immediately put an Eterna LUT on the file. Jordan loves Eterna

Where I don’t agree, is when they say ASTIA is boring. In fact, it is actually one of my top favorite film simulation, because it gives me a great balance between pleasing skin tones and vivid, but not oversaturated colors. I use ASTIA almost always when I take landscape images with people in the frame. I find it gives me the best results, better than Velvia, which is not great for skin tones.

I once read a sentence of a buddhist monk, who said: “the too pure water does not contain any fish“.

Obviously the monk was referring to life, which can’t be lived fully if we pretend to live it in perfection and purity. If lived fully, then life is going to get “dirty” or “not perfect” sometimes.

So what has this to do with photography?

Well, let’s apply this wisdom to a much more profane subject: camera gear. And let’s say “the too perfect system does not contain customers.” And “customers” are what keeps a system alive.

And now to the point of this article.

In the ZP productions video we recently shared, ZP says that when Fujifilm launched the GFX system a few years ago, it had sheer perfect lenses. But he noticed that with the latest lens releases (GF80mmF1.7), Fujifilm traded in a bit of that perfection to release less perfect, smaller and more affordable lens.

He compares the GF110mmF2 to the GF80mmF1.7, the first one being expressions of Fuji’s perfection, the second one, while still being excellent and he actually totally loves to shoot with it, just not being just as perfect as the GF110mmF2.

Now, I get the point that ZP makes, but I can’t share his worry that Fujifilm is giving up on perfection.

In fact, I believe that so far the real anomaly in the GF lens lineup was that Fujifilm focused solely on perfection!

But if the GFX systems wants to survive, then it needs to offer a bit of everything, the absolutely perfect lenses, but also smaller, lighter and more affordable lenses. It’s this balance that will guarantee the success to Fujifilm and what will bring more and more new customers to the GFX system.

$500 GF Zoom – BRILLIANT MOVE

I am totally convinced that the upcoming $500 GF zoom lens (kit price) is a brilliant move!

Small, light, slower, affordable, but perfect for casual shooting and travel photography, while probably retaining the 102+MP resolving power.

The $500 GF zoom coupled with new affordable GF bodies has the potential to bring so many new customers to the system, that the GFX system as a whole will immensely profit from it, and Fujifilm will have more resources to develop more of those “prefect” lenses and high end bodies.

This is why I totally support Fujifilm’s move, and quite frankly I am tempted to buy the new zoom too. If I can have a versatile and small lens for my hiking tours in the Dolomites or to bring with on my travels, then that’s perfect for my needs.

In good light, the new GF zoom will be an excellent performer. And if you are like me, meaning once the sun settles down you put your camera on a tripod anyway to take your landscape shots at base ISO, little it matters if it is a slow lens. I rarely take handheld landscape images in low light anyway.

If Fujifilm wants more fish to swim in the GFX waters, then they have to give up on the proud goal of building up an optically 100% perfect and pure system with astronomical specs, and give us less perfect lenses, too.

Less perfect means also affordable, portable and compact, and that’s what the GFX system needs.

Fujifilm Managers Optimism: Potential GFX Customers Number Overwhelmingly Increasing, X-S10 Attracting Young New Customers, 5G and More

The Japanese website phileweb published an interview with Fujifilm managers.

They talk about the momentum the Fujifilm GFX series is experiencing, about the harsh COVID-19 situation, the introduction of the Fujifilm X-S10, the possibilities 5G might offer and more.

Overall, they seem very confident and positive about the future of their imaging division.

Worth to note is the part of the interview, where Fujifilm explains they find it a pity that people just store their images on their phones, and that they try to find ways to motivate people to print.

Once again, statements like these denote the huge photographic culture Fujifilm carries in their DNA, which among the others translates also into a wide variety of ergonomically different cameras that are crafted to be fun to use for different types of photographers.

I feel that for Fujifilm, photography is more than just getting hyperbolic specs on paper. It’s also, and mainly, about cultivating and incentivize our passion and fun for photography.

ePHOTOzine Fujinon GF80mmF1.7 Review: Impressive Chromatic Aberration Control, Outstanding Sharpness, Superb Image Quality

When the ultra fast Fujinon GF80mmF1.7 was launched, some noticed a minimal sign of fringing when pixel peeping into images to ultra detailed pixel level. Something to worry about?

Apparently not.

According to ePHOTOzine, who just published its full technical review, the GF80mmF1.7 is able to contain chromatic aberration extremely well. They write:

CA (Chromatic Aberration) is also very impressive, centrally being close to zero as we stop down slightly. The edges are also kept well under control.

I did play around with the GF80mmF1.7 of my close friend too (he sold all his Nikon Z gear for the GFX system) and quite frankly it’s a stunning performer in terms of optical quality.

My New Lens Temptation Gets a Focus on Glass Episode: the Fujinon GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR

then you’ll know that not only I have a Fujifilm GFX100S on pre-order, and because in crop we trust, I pre-ordered also the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4, but for reasons I have briefly explained here, I am totally tempted by the Fujinon GF100-200mmF5.6.

I did handle the Fujinon GF100-200mmF5.6 at the store, and was surprised that it is actually so light, hence definitely portable for my hikes in the Dolomites.

However, I did put the purchase of that lens on hold, as in 2021 I already bought the XF80mm, XF27MKII, GFX100S and GF32-64, and it’s getting more and more tricky to convince my wife that we really need yet another lens.

And things have not become easier after Fujifilm launched a massive rebate on guess which lens? Exactly, the GF100-200!

For the sake of my bank account health I am still resisting, but Fujifilm keeps up fighting for my money, this time by dedicating their latest Focus on Glass episode to the Fujinon GF100-200mmF5.6.

Well, I’ve watched the episode, and here is what Fujifilm engineers and managers say about this lens:

  • Fujifilm wanted to make a tele-zoom suitable for handheld shooting
  • they needed to develop a smaller and lighter lens
  • at planing stage, they set their target at 1 kg
  • the lens has 5 stops OIS
  • this makes handheld shooting easier
  • Fujifilm hopes you will use this lens to take images that you have never experienced before with a 35mm format lens
  • with GF teleconverter it covers up to 221mm (35mm equivalent)
  • during the development tests, Fujifilm has conducted repeated toughness tests
  • it is a rugged lens while maintaining lightness and compactness
  • although it’s a zoom, resolution is superb and able to resolve the high megapixel of GFX cameras over the entire zoom range and even at f/5.6
  • in order to make the lens brighter and still have higher resolving power, a greater number of elements in the lens are required
  • but the more elements you use, the more the lens gets bigger
  • that’s why Fujifilm designed ever lens element to be as thing as possible
  • every effort to save size and weight was made
  • the engineer is proud of the final result
  • you can easily shoot handheld in places where you can bring a tripod
  • Fujifilm designed a small focus lock mechanism to fit in the lens
  • toughness test were contacted to overcome weaknesses on by one

Time to update our previous X and GFX gear timeline, which was not only limited to 2021, but lacked of some gear we rumored in the following months.

Also, I’ll include a list of products that will not come as the fake rumors keep spreading and I notice a tendency in forums to believe just everything that is written or talked about somewhere, may it be a monochrome camera, and X-T40 with IBIS coming very soon, the X-H2 coming 2021 and totally random stuff like that.

But luckily there is a 100% efficient anti-fake-rumors-vaccine called FujiRumors, so check out the list down below to know what Fujifilm really plans and when it will come.

And it won’t end here.

In fact, I have a skype call scheduled with the Japanese source in very near future. Apple Adds RAW Support for More Fujifilm Cameras Including Fujifilm X-T4 and X-S10 with MacOS Big Sur and iPadOS 14.5

FR-reader Moritz made me notice on Twitter here, that a couple of weeks ago MacOS Big Sur added uncompressed RAW support for additional Fujifilm cameras.

This means you can now edit RAW files from Fujifilm X-T4, X-S10 and more in all major image editing apps on iPad as well as apps on macOS that use the RAW engine provided by iOS (Apple Core Image RAW), such as Affinity Photo or one of my favorites, RAW Power.

Sadly not yet supported are the Fujifilm GFX100S and the original GFX100. Also the Fujifilm X-E4 is not yet included.
