MIRRORLESS WARS Part 2: Fujifilm vs Canon, Nikon, Sony and Panasonic by Tony Northrup

Share

Mirrorless Wars

Back in August, Tony and Chelsea Northrup have posted their thoughts about the so-called mirrorless war, where they basically predicted success for full frame, and said Fujifilm will remain a niche product, because it’s only APS-C and they don’t have super fast glass to match full frame DOF. You can see the summary of the video here.

Did the release of the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GFX 50R made them more optimistic about Fujifilm’s future?

And did the Nikon Z7, Nikon Z6 and Canon EOS R keep up with the hype and hopes? And what about the Panasonic S1 and S1R?

Here some key points:

SONY

  • Sony is better than DSLRs in many way
  • Sony is Nr.1 full frame camera manufacturer
  • Sony has the most FF mirroless lenses and is most advanced in technology
  • Canon, Nikon and Panasonic fired back
  • Also Fuji fired back, in a different way

NIKON

  • Nikon Z series was a disappointment, didn’t live up to the hype ahead of launch
  • build quality of consumer camera
  • 1 card slot
  • slower AF than D850
  • Nikon Z7 is too expensive
  • Nikon should have launched only the nikon Z6
  • no Pro level lenses

CANON

  • no hype, launch event pretty quiet
  • more reasonable price
  • marketed as consumer camera, hence 1 SD card slot is ok
  • at least full generation behind Sony
  • Pro level and unique lenses

FUJIFILM

  • APS-C
  • Fujifilm X-T3 mostly cought up with Sony autofocus and eye AF
  • No EVF blackout
  • full generation ahead of Canon and Nikon Mirrorless
  • only $1,500
  • Medium Format
  • Fujifilm GFX 50R for $4,500
  • Price similar to high-end FF cameras with a substantial bigger sensor

PANASONIC

  • 2 Full Frame cameras announced
  • Panasonic aknoledges sensor size is a problem, so they go full frame
  • with M43, Panasonic tries to catch up with Full Frame by releasing very fast glass

OLYMPUS / PENTAX

  • they are missing in action
