Fujifilm’s Biggest Error is Now Fixed (and Waiting for Sigma)

It’s a rare thing…

it’s a rare thing that the entire FujiRumors community agrees on a certain matter.

But Fujifilm succeeded in this miracle!

How?

By categorically refusing to open their lens protocols to third party lens manufacturers.

And still in 2019 top Fujifilm managers insisted that there is no need to have Sigma, Tamron & Co on the X mount side of life.

I love you Fuji, but this was just the biggest error the management ever took, proven by the fact that’s it’s also the one decision the entire FR community disagreed with.

Well, Fujifilm finally fixed this error in 2020, by saying they open X mount to third parties.

Late, but better late than never.

And guess what is happening? Third party manufacturers are finally joining the X mount, attracted by the Fujifilm market share and facilitated by the open lens protocols (a deal breaker for Sigma for a long time).

So let’s see what is happening.

Cosina launched the Voigtländer Nokton 35mmF1.2 X, no autofocus, but with electronic contacts to provide Exif data and focus check.

Tokina launched a couple of X mount lenses.

Sigma is hinting to have lenses for X mount coming in 2021.

And the probably biggest news so far: Tamron will be launching the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for Fujifilm X in 2021.

And since we have Tamron officially on board now, I thought we could give a revival to our original Tamron X mount lenses wishlist, which we published back in 2020 here.

You can still vote the survey, but so far you top 10 Tamron wishes are:

  1. Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD / G2
  2. Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  3. Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD
  4. Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD
  5. Tamron SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD
  6. Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD
  7. Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  8. Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC (LD) Aspherical [IF]
  9. Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD
  10. Tamron SP AF 60mm F/2.0 Di II LD [IF] Macro 1:1

And given the increasing X mount autofocus offering, we launched the dedicated third party X autofocus lenses group here.

Tamron Managers Interview: “Fujifilm’s Market is Sufficiently Large. We Plan more X Mount Lenses” and more Tamron 18-300 Images

In a Japanese interview to dc.watch, Tamron talks about them entering the Fujifilm X series market with the brand new Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VX D.

Down below you can find the summary (based on google translate).

You will also find more images that show the lens mounted on the super small Fujifilm X-S10 as well as fully extended to 300mm.

Note that Tamron says the Fujifilm X market is big enough, hence they will release more X mount lenses in future they can’t unveil now.

The FujiRumors community voted on their top 10 Tamron (and Sigma) wishes already. You can find the results here.

TAMRON SP 28-75/2.8 XR Di LD
TAMRON SP 70-200/2.8 Di VC USD
    SIGMA 85/1.4 EX DG HSM
    SIGMA 50-150/2.8 EX DC HSM
  2. Fixed compatibility issues with X-T200 camera. Be noted, since X-T200 is equipped with a non X-Trans CMOS, its AF performance is poorer when using EF mount lenses. Please use MF mode if necessary.

Please download the firmware file and release notes from Fringer official website.

For old version, i.e. Gen.1 products EF-FX Pro and EF-FX, the new firmware (v3.30) only fixes XT200 compatiblity issue. Because the hardware resources have been used up, there won’t be any update including new lens data.e

FUJIFILM X AF Lenses: SIGMA Needs Bigger Market Share, TOKINA Designed X Glass Already but Stopped by Royalties, TAMRON is Vague

I have received a rumor by a new source (thanks) regarding Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses for Fujifilm X mount.

  1. Sigma: it depends on Fuji’s market share (we already shared the rumor here)
  2. Tamron gave vague answers to our source (there were rumors of  Fuji support in the past)
  3. Tokina has actually started to design some lenses for Fujifilm already, but they don’t finalize and launch them because of royalties they have to pay to Fujifilm

Of course take it with a grain of salt for now, and if I get any updates, you will read them here on FujiRumors.

But I just remembered, what top Fujifilm manager Toshi said, when DPR asked him here, if Fujifilm welcomes glass by third-party lens manufacturers:

They’re not open standards as yet, but of course our customers want choice. We’re always considering what would benefit our customers, and more lenses are generally beneficial for customers.

Dear Fujifilm, your Fujinon glass is nothing but amazing, but we indeed want more options, and if it’s true that some kind of protectionism is holding off some third-party manufacturers to launch autofocus glass for Fujifilm, then please change your policy.

With that said, we are in the world of “grain of salt” with this rumor for now ;).

But if somebody out there has some knowledge to share, feel free to contact me via email at fujirumor@gmail.com or via anonymous rumor box (use a nick-name if you want, so that I can recognize you if in future you decide to share something else).
