My Thoughts on the September 2 Announcements and What Would You Like Fujifilm to Surprise You With Tomorrow?

So, very soon, on September 2 at 9AM New York time, Fujifilm will have a major announcement day.

The gear that will surely come is this one:

But as you know, X summit can always contain surprises that have never been rumored before.

So the question is, what would you like to get surprised with on September 2?

And just briefly, my quick thoughts on the gear to be announced tomorrow.

  • Fujifilm GFX50SII

Great move. Using the same design of GFX100S saves tons of R&D. Making GFX more affordable is of crucial importance. If there is the AF boost Fujifilm promises, then this will be a big hit. But as I wrote on my GFX100S hands on, retro vintage dials are just more fun for me to use, so I hope Fujifilm will also continue to give us different options in terms of form factor.

  • GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6

All good on specs (and really lovely from the leaked images). As I wrote already, it fixes the true anomaly in the G mount lens system. However, also here, I love aperture rings. This one has none. So I’ll stick with my GF32-64mmF4.

  • Fujifilm X-T30II

After the X-T30II specs leaked, some said that the X-T30II is slightly bigger than the original X-T30. But no, it is not. It’s exactly the same body size. The X-T30II is more or less just a firmware update as the Fujifilm X-E2S was for the Fujfiilm X-E2. The best news around this camera, is that we now can hope for major X-T30 firmware update, as also the X-E2 got the same firmware feature of the X-E2s at some point.

  • Fujinon XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR and XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR

Faster autofocus (linear motor), better build (weather sealing), capable to resolve more megapixel (for future higher megapixel cameras). This was not only a good move by Fujifilm, but a necessary one. You can read the full specs for both lenses here. Especially considering how popular these two focal lengths are, Fujifilm had to release some absolute stunners. And that’s what they are!

  • Meh or Wow?

Maybe we don’t get an exciting new camera with brand new sensor. Maybe we don’t get a totally surprising new lens (oh, where are you XF150-600), but the Fujifilm X Summit of tomorrow, September 2 at 9AM New York time is a very well thought out step forward by Fujifilm. Everything (except for the X-T30II) makes sense and will contribute to the growth of the X and GFX system.

And as I said above, I can’t remember a Fujifilm X summit that has not surprised us, either with some prototypes to show, development announcements and what not.

So, again, drop down below what you’d like to be surprised with tomorrow.

Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will Weight “Less Than Half” than GF32-64mmF4

DON’T MISS IT: September 2 at 9AM New York Time – Fujifilm X Summit and Live Blog on FujiRumors

Lots, if not everything, has already leaked here on FujiRumors about the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.

We know about the collapsible lens design, we know about its size (see above), we know it will not have OIS and no aperture ring, we know its price.

Another tidbit, though, we can add today, is that the Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 will weight less than half than the one Fujinon G mount lens I own and I am totally in love with as it is a prime lens that can zoom: the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR (which weights 875g).

I see what Fujifilm is trying to do here.

I mean, how the heck can any zoom lens compete with the stellar GF32-64?

Certainly the GF32-64 is unbeatable in terms of image quality. I mean, have you seen the image I’ve shared of the village I live in and I did a massive crop and you could still clearly recognize the curtains on my sleeping room? And the lovely pop it has even when shot af f/5.6?

If you can’t beat it in terms of image quality, then beat it in almost everything else: make it much smaller, much lighter and much more affordable, and it will have a chance to carve out its niche among Fujifilm GFX shooters.

I personally will stick with the Fujinon GF32-64mmF4. Mainly because I already own it, and because I used it on a 6 hours hike recently. I packed with my GFX100S in my small Camslinger Outdoor bag (yep, it still fits in that small bag !!) and hiked no problem with it.

So for now I don’t see the need for the GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6, although having such a light and compact G mount zoom would certainly be a temptation for those looking to make their GFX system as portable as it gets, maybe in combination with the super small GF50mmF3.5 prime.

GF 35-70 Rumor Recap

Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 to Cost $999 (Lens Only) and $500 (Kit Price)

According to information we have received, the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will cost $999. However, you can get it for $500 if purchased in kit with a GFX body.

This makes it the most affordable G mount lens along with probably the next lens I’ll buy for my GFX100S, the Fujinon GF50mmF3.5.

And you have no idea how tempted I am by the GF50mmF3.5. Just don’t tell my wife about it ;).

To Be Announced on September 2

Don’t Worry: Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 is Weather Sealed

FujiRumors told you already back in March (!!!) that Fujifilm will launch the Fujifilm GFX50SII.

And over all these months, we have leaked, price, specs, release date and more.

We have also told you that, along with the Fujifilm GFX50SII, Fujifilm will launch a new and affordable zoom lens, the Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6.

When we leaked the first details (no aperture ring, $500 kit price, etc), some FR-readers were sure that this would be the G mount equivalent of the Fujinon XC lenses, hence just a plastic mount and possibly not even weather sealing, in order to keep it as cheap as possible.

But that’s not correct.

The Fujinon GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 will have a metal mount and, that’s today’s rumor, according to our sources it will also be weather sealed!

Sensor Cleaning and IBIS

For most users of X-Series cameras, do-it-yourself sensor cleaning with blowers, sticky sticks or swabs is a matter of course. However, things can get a little bit tricky if your camera has IBIS.

by Rico Pfirstinger

Sooner or later, cameras with interchangeable lenses get dust or dirt on the sensor. When the built-in sensor-cleaning function (SET UP > USER SETTING > SENSOR CLEANING > OK) doesn’t help, you can clean the sensor by yourself.

If you leave your camera’s sensor exposed, it will soon collect dust and spots from dried fluids.

Popular Sensor Cleaning Options

  • Touchless cleaning involves using a blower, like the Giottos Rocket Air Blaster, to rid the sensor of dust particles. A key feature of such devices is a filter in the intake valve that prevents contaminated (dusty) air from being blown against the sensor.
Caution! Don’t use compressed air from aerosol cans that contain propellants. Particles could hit the sensor like tiny projectiles and damage the protective surface!
  • Tough sensor dirt (like water or oil stains) requires wet cleaning with a sensor swab. They consist of wipers that are wetted with special cleaning fluids. Wipe one side of the swab from left to right over the full width of the sensor, and then from right to left with the other side of the swab. Your X-mount camera requires swabs that match APS-C-sized sensors.

Fujinon GF35-70mm F4.5-5.6 will Have a Metal Bayonet

We already shared lots of info about the upcoming Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6.

And today we have one tidbit, that might surprise some FR-readers, who where sure it will have a plastic bayonet.

Well, I am sorry to disappoint you ;).

Unlike the Fujinon XC lenses, the Fujinon GF35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 will have a nice and shiny metal bayonet!

Digital Camera Market Share 2020: Only Canon, Sony and Fujifilm Grow

Every year, Techno System Research, a major marketing research company located in Japan, publishes the worldwide camera market share data.

And while the data is behind a (very expensive) paywall, the main chart is published by Nikkei and we’ve covered it in the past:

Now the data for 2020 has been released by Techno System Research.

So what changed between 2019 and 2020? Let’s compare:

  • Canon 47.9% (+2.5%)
  • Sony 22.1% (+1.9%)
  • Nikon 13.7% (-4.9%)
  • Fujifilm 5.6% (+0.9%)
  • Panasonic 4.4% (-0.3%)

These top 5 camera companies took 93.8% of the global digital camera market.

Keep in mind that this is the overall digital camera market share (DSLR + Mirrorless + Point & Shoot). So no surprise to see Fujifilm behind Nikon. When it comes to mirrorless data only, until 2019 Fujifilm was clearly ahead of Nikon and on the third position after Sony and Canon.

The Winners
