Fujifilm 2021 – Is This Really All?

Every week I get many emails from fellow FR-readers, asking me if this is really all.

They look at the current X mount roadmap and the latest G mount roadmap, and they see only 3 lenses in total. That’s meager.

Then they look at our rumors, see that we rumored only two cameras, the Fujifilm GFX100S and the Fujifilm X-E4 and wonder if that’s all for 2021.

I diligently reply to all of them, but it has become quite time consuming. So let me address this question one final time here on FujiRumors, so that in future I can just copy and paste the link to this article and send it to those, who inevitably will make me the same question again.

How Many Cameras Could we Get?

Let’s look at how many cameras Fujifilm has released in the past few years:

  • 2020 – 4 new cameras (X-T4, X-S10, X-T100, X100V)
  • 2019 – 4 new cameras (GFX100, X-A7, X-T30, X-Pro3)
  • 2018 – 7 new cameras (Fujifilm GFX50R,. Fujifilm X-T3, Fujifilm X-H1, Fujifilm XF10, Fujifilm X-T100, Fujifilm X-A5, Fujifilm X-A20)

2018 seems like a great year, but consider that there were 4 entry level Bayer sensor cameras developed by the Xacti corporation (whom Fujifilm outsourced the entry level line development).

Given the massive struggles of Fujifilm’s entry level line, I’d not be surprised if Fujifilm would just pause any entry-level project and slow down if not completely stop the release of new low end cameras.

So, let’s look at this list without entry level Xacti cameras with Bayer sensor, hence take in to account only those cameras, 100% developed by Fujifilm. In this case, we get the following result:

  • 2020 – 3 new cameras (X-T4, X-S10, X100V)
  • 2019 – 3 new cameras (GFX100, X-T30, X-Pro3)
  • 2018 – 3 new cameras (Fujifilm GFX50R,. Fujifilm X-T3, Fujifilm X-H1)

At the moment we have 2 cameras rumored (GFX100S and X-E4), which means that, if Fuji keeps its pace over the last 3 years, we could see at least one more not yet rumored camera in 2021 plus eventual cameras made by the Xacti corporation (the Bayer entry level cameras).

And while there seems to be a rather clear pattern here (3 Fujifilm-made cameras a year), we must keep in mind that this is all just speculation based on past releases, and not a solid rumor at all!.

We could get more, less or the same number of cameras we got in the past.

How Many Lenses Could we Get?

We told you over 3 years ago, that Fujifilm plans to release about 2/3 X and GFX lenses every year, hence 4 to 6 lenses. And checking back, we can say we were spot on. Look at this:

In 2018 we got 6 lenses: 5 X mount lenses including 2 X mount cine lenses and 1 G mount lens

In 2018 we also got: Fujinon XF 1.4x Teleconverter MK II, Fujinon GF 1.4x Teleconverter, 18mm Macro Extension Tube (G-mount), 45mm Macro Extension Tube (G-mount).

In 2019 we got 4 lenses: 2 XF lenses and 2 GF lenses

In 2020 we got 5 lenses: 3 XF lenses and 2 GF lenses

And in 2021?

Well, the current Fujinon X and Fujinon GFX lens roadmap we see a total of three lenses.

But if Fujifilm keeps the pace of the last years, we can speculate that this won’t be all.

Hence, I think we can be optimistic that there will be at least one more lens, with chance to get up to 3 more lenses that don’t show up on the current roadmap yet.

And keep in mind, in 2021 the Fujifilm system could get huge help from Sigma ;).

Conclusion

Overall, there is hope.

There is hope that Fujifilm has more to deliver than what is currently listed on the X and GFX lens roadmap, and that we might get more cameras than “just” the X-E4 and GFX100S.

But if it really is this way, and if so, what it is, for that, my friends, you have to follow FujiRumors in the days, weeks and months to come.

I will put all I can to try to give you all the answers as fast and as reliable as I can.
