Review of the Fujinon XF200mm f/2 for Motorsports Photography

Fujinon XF200mm f/2.0 LM OIS WR

Review of the Fujinon XF200mm f/2 for Motorsports Photography

OVERVIEW

I had the pleasure to use and extensively test the newly released Fujinon XF200 f/2.0 LM OIS WR in October, 2018 while covering the Sports Car Club of America’s 2018 National Championships, also know as “The Runoffs” at Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma, CA, Oct 19-21, 2018.

Fujifilm North America graciously sent me the Fujinon XF200 f/2.0 along with an X-T3 and battery grip for approximately 10 days for motorsports photography testing to compare to my Fujifilm X-H1. The purpose of the test was to collect autofocus performance data for both cameras when used in a real-world professional motorsports photography use-case, and for this weekend long test-session, I used the new XF200 f/2.0 exclusively, as well as the new 1.4X teleconverter in some situations.

BACKGROUND: I’ve been a professionally accredited motorsports photojournalist for 15 years. I’ve was an official track photographers for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for 7 years, and have been shooting as an accredited photojournalist for Sonoma Raceway since 2003. I cover all their professional series races, including NASCAR, NHRA Professional and Indy Car, and my photographs have been published in numerous newspapers in the SF Bay Area, including the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as various motorsports websites and magazines.

REAL LIFE SIZE COMPARISON: Fujinon XF16-80mm vs XF18-135mm and Fujinon XF16mmF2.8 vs XF35mmF2

These are the first real life comparisons between the Fujinon XF16-80mmF4 (mcok-up) and XF18-135mmF3-5-5.6 as well as the Fujinon XF16mmF2.8 (mcok-up) and XF 35mmF2.

These are nt final lenses, only mock-ups, so size might change until final release.

Unblike all the XF16-80 mock-ups we have seen previously, this one has no marked aperture ring.

And if you want to see how the Fujinon XF 33mmF1.0 compares to the XF 35mmF1.4 and XF 35mmF2, make sure to check out this article.

First Images and Specs of New 7Artisans 60mm F2.8 1:1 Macro Lens for Fujifilm X Mirrorless Cameras

Mirrorlessrumors received the first images and specs of the 7Artisan 60mm f/2.8 1:1: Macro lens.

It will be available for Fujifilm X mirrorless APS-C cameras as well as Sony E, EOS-M and MFT mount.

First sample image at the bottom of this article.

Mirrorlessrumors notes that the description contains an error when describing the lens construction, since this is a screenshot from a beta page that is still under construction and mistakes will be fixed.

Checking the complete list of current and future native X-mount lenses, I see currently only three native 1:1 macro lenses for Fujifilm X available:

The 7Artisan 60mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro lens will add to the already wide range of Chinese made Fujifilm X mount lenses. Full list below:

Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 vs XF 35mm F1.4 vs XF 35mm F2 – SIZE COMPARISON

Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 vs XF35mmF1.4 vs XF35mmF2

As you know, I have been to photokina 2018, and I also have delivered you the worldwide first real life images of the XF33mmF1.0, XF16mmF2.8 and XF16-80mmF4 lenses, as well as a side by side comparison of the 3 new lenses on Fuji’s roadmap.

However, I keep up getting questions about how big the XF 33mm F1.0 is, compared to its little brothers, the XF 35mm F1.4 and XF 35mm F2 WR.

So based on the images I took and what I have seen with my own eyes at the Photokina Fujifilm booth, I try to give you a visual representation of how Fuji’s 50mm equivalent trinity compares side by side mounted on a Fujifilm X-T3.

Of course this can’t be super-accurate, and I’d say it’s 85+% close to perfection. However, the Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 will hit the market in 2020, and until there, the final size can change.

In an earlier post on FujiRumors, we launched a huge poll, asking you guys if you consider the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 is too big for you. 7,500 people voted already, and you can check the results here.

We also launched XF33mmF1.0 feature polls in the past, that you can check out here.

And speaking of 35mm lenses…

Good Design Award

Fujifilm won 29 awards at the Good Design Awards 2018.

Now, I don’t know how the Good Design Award works, but if it’s like EISA and TIPA, then don’t take it too seriously. We have documented here, how EISA and TIPA work. Check the article out, if you want to know get clarity about the (not so transparent) award business.

With that said, Good Design gave an award to 29 Fuji products. Here are the cameras and lenses:

Fujifilm X-H1 Review Roundup in Times of Fujifilm X-T3

Fujifilm X-H1

With all the eyes pointed towards Fuji’s brand new speed monster, the Fujifilm X-T3, I thought it might be a good idea to dedicate a roundup to the one camera, that definitely has been mostly overshadowed by the X-T3 release, the Fujifilm X-H1.

I have tested the Fujifilm X-T3 during my Photokina stay, and it’s undeniable that Fujifilm achieved significant speed improvements.

But as we reported in latest rumors, the Fujifilm X-H1 is definitely also a fast focusing camera, and will get some improvements via firmware update in future. Surely IBIS will become better, but who knows if also some AF improvements can be expected.

Moreover, if you need IBIS, a bigger grip, an EVF that protrudes even further out, bigger buttons, an even tougher body (8H hardness) and other aspects that the X-H1 offers over the X-T3, then the Fujifilm X-H1 might be the best choice for you in the Fuji X camera system.
