Fujifilm named Thomson Reuters 2018 Top 100 Global Technology Leaders… and the Road to No.1 in Premium Mirrorless Camera Market

Fujifilm has been named (again) amongst the 2018 Top 100 global technology leaders by Thomson Reuters.

In the camera segment, Fujifilm was indeed innovative, by launching a new line of mirrorless medium format cameras with the Fujifilm GFX 50S, that has all the potential to become a game changer in the industry, especially once the Fujifilm GFX 100S hits the market, with its new 8K capable 100MP BSI sensor and faster sensor readout. And also an affordable rangefinder version is coming, the Fujifilm GFX 50R.

On the APS-C front, the current effort is set to give customers a wider range of camera body offers, by adding for example the Fujifilm X-H1 to the lineup, which will have IBIS and is more oriented towards video shooters, as well as giving “older” cameras a refresh, first and foremost the Fujifilm X-T3 by the end of 2018.

And lenses… lots of lenses for both, ASP-C and MF line, as we reported here.

The goal of this huge effort is very humbly described in Fujifilm’s medium-term management plan Vision 2019: “work toward capturing No.1 market share in the premium mirrorless camera market” within March 2020.

An incredibly ambitious goal, but as we can see, Fujifilm has lots of great stuff in the pipeline for 2018/2019, that has all been rumored on FujiRumors already (+ some surprises I am sure ;) )

Fujifilm X-A5 and XC 15-45mm Pancake Zoom Announcement on January 31

Fellow Fujifilm Lovers,

I would like to inform you that Fujifilm is going to announce the long rumored Fujifilm X-A5 and the new XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 pancake zoom (more specs here), on January 31 (or 30, depending on your time zone).

Back in September 2017, as usual FujiRumors broke the news about the Fujifilm X-T100, a new entry level camera with Bayer sensor and viewfinder. But so far, no source could tell me the precise announcement date.

I guess that if the X-T100 would come with the X-A5 and XC-15-45 on January 31 or even with the Fujifilm X-H1 on February 15, then I would know it at this stage. However, it’s still very silent, which could mean the announcement is not immediate. Or maybe I’m just missing something… we will soon see.

As usual, you can expect full time and non stop Live Blogging coverage here on FujiRumors.

I know the X-A line is an absolute success in Asia, and in my recent trip to Prague (photos here, here and here), I indeed saw a few Asian people with the X-A2 or X-A3. But personally I’m not so hot on this camera.

Much more interesting is the XC15-45 pancake zoom, which, if its performance is worth of the name “Fujinon”, could become one of my travel lenses of the future. And looking at the poll below, I see I’m not the only one :).

With that said, the XF18-55 remains just an insanely good kit lens, and I doubt that the small pancake XC15-45 will be able to match its image quality.

Let’s wait for January 31 and see :)

Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-H1: Will the X-T3 Have IBIS? Advantages of Creating New X-H Line? Should Fujifilm Have Merged X-T3/H1 into One Camera?

The debate and the questions started after yesterday’s Fujifilm X-T3 rumor.

I thought to put some of the questions and speculations I could read in the comments and that I got via email in this article, and maybe add some thoughts to it.

The Journey from Fujifilm X-T2S to Fujfiilm X-H1

As you know, the upcoming Fujifilm X-H1 was originally planed to be called X-T2s.

You might think: “Who cares, just a name change“.

Maybe… or maybe not.

The fact that Fujifilm decided to change name, and hence to create a new line of Fujifilm X series cameras, could be quite relevant.

It’s safe to assume that a new line of cameras means that this line will have some peculiarities that sets them apart from all other Fujifilm cameras.

No IBIS on Fujifilm X-T3?

What could be the features that set the Fujifilm X-H1 apart from any other Fujifilm X series camera, including the Fujifilm X-T3?

I am investigating this, but you guys already started to make speculations in the comments.

The most widly spread of your speculation in the comments is that IBIS will be a feature reserved for the Fujifilm X-H1, which means the Fujifilm X-T3 will not have IBIS.

If your speculations are right, then Fujifilm did well to change the name from X-T2S to X-H1. Two different camera lines, with some more or less significant differences, such as IBIS… but there are more of them.

Fujifilm X-H1 for Video and Fujifilm X-T3 for Stills

Let’s assume the speculations of many FR-readers are correct, and the Fujifilm X-T3 will not have IBIS.

In that case, unless you work on a rig/gimbal (where IBIS can actually become a problem, as we have shown here), the Fujifilm X-H1 will be the better video camera if you shoot handheld, not only because of IBIS, but also because the ergonomics, controls and features are more build around the needs of videographers.

The bigger camera and deeper grip of the Fujifilm X-H1 will definitely help overall stability and balance while filming, especially if you use the X-H1 with long Cine Lenses like the Fujinon MK 18-55 and MK 50-135.

I also doubt any videographer would really use the exposure compensation dial to adjust brightness while filming, since it would introduce lots of camera shakes. This is why Fujifilm got rid of it on the X-H1. You will control exposure compensation via command dial and check your value on a top LCD panel.

The bigger body might also allow better heat dissipation, allowing maybe longer (or even unlimited?) 4K video recording time.

The Fujifilm X-T line would remain mainly a stills camera, with a smaller body and more analog controls (exposure compensation dial).

And if the Fujifilm X-T3 really has no IBIS as you guys speculated, then, from a mere image quality point of view, this might have some advantages, too, since IBIS can introduce more vignetting and it can create issues with heat dissipation that lead to worst high ISO performance, as Panasonic ambassador and GH5S beta tester told us here. On the other hand, I can think of many other situations where IBIS is useful also for stills.

Should Fujifilm Have Merged X-T3 and X-H1 into One Camera?

And what’s the advantage of creating a new X-H Line?

I don’t know… but I’ll throw in some thoughts…

Making the X-T3 more “video friendly” would have ment changing the classic X-T controls and design by adding, for example, a deeper grip and overall size to the camera. And given how much loved the current design is amongst Fujifilm X-T shooters, I am not sure if such changes would have been appreciated.

By creating a new line with the Fujifilm X-H1, Fujifilm has much more freedom to make more radical ergonomic changes oriented towards the needs of videographers. And as you can see in our leaked X-H1 sketches, the X-H1 has some significant differences compared to the X-T2.

But the big question remains: will IBIS really be reserved to the X-H line? I will try to answer this question as soon as possible.

Christmas is just over (I hope you had a good one), and I’m 100% back on track and motivated to make your (and my) time here on FujiRumors as fun as possible.

And it couldn’t be different, since right after the Christmas break, the first rumors are now landing into my Inbox.

Hence, after the EVF blackout less rumor here, I have another rumor for you…. and you better mark this date:

Fujifilm X-H1 will be announced on February 14, 2018.

I don’t expect last-minute changes by Fujifilm, but if there should be some, I will make sure to let you guys know.

On a personal note…

it seems that Fujifilm has an excellent timing when it comes to new gear announcements, since they will launch the Fujifilm X-H1 exactly during my winter holidays… another planed travel I have to cancel. D’OH!

But hey, I have shared Fujifilm X-H1 rumors since back in July 2017, and after 6+ months of constant rumors, with lots of breaking rumors and detailed specs leaked on FR (see below), I won’t miss the final appointment with the Fujifilm X-H1.

That’s why I am very excited, highly motivated and 100% focused on the big final launch party with the big live blogging on February 14 here on FujiRumors.

Support for Homeless People

As you might have noticed, here on FujiRumors we are convinced supporters of charity initiatives. In fact, over the last two years, thanks to your support, we collected $5,000 for free education to Cambodian kids, and as you can see above, the kids wanted to say “Thank you” to all of you guys :)

This time, I’d like to bring to your attention a charity initiative launched by our friends at Cosyspeed camera bags.

Future Fujifilm Kaizen Firmware Feature Wishlist – Share Now on FujiRumors!

First off: Thank you Fujifilm ♡

Especially the recent X-Pro2 firmware update was simply amazing, and it delivered even more than what you promised us back in September.

Your firmware support is one of the reasons why I’m really happy and proud to own your products and be part of the Fujifilm world.

So please don’t think I’m not grateful for all the huge Kaizen love you delivered to us Fuji shooters over all these years, when today I invite the FR-community to throw in some ideas for future updates.

But fact is, that always, right after major firmware updates, I get many emails from the FujiRumors community, who share with me their ideas regarding future updates. And I like it that the community is so active and constructive, and keeps up thinking at ways to improve your cameras.

Some asked me for highlight priority metering mode, some others would like the ability to adjust ISO via command dial on X-Pro2 or more peaking colors for old X-E1/Pro1 cameras. Personally, owning the Fujifilm X-E3, I can’t wait to see a proper geotagging via bluetooth.

But I won’t extend the list further… I’ll leave it to the FujiRumors community to add their wishes in the comments.

So now it’s your turn guys, go ahead and let us know which firmware update you would like for which camera model.

And knowing that Fujifilm reads us, feel free to share also your personal “thank you” to Fujifilm… I’m sure they like it if we don’t take firmware updates for granted and show them our appreciation.

Fringer Canon EF – Fujifilm X Smart Adapter Prototype AF-C Video Demo

After almost a month’s research and development, Fringer EF-FX smart adapter prototype’s PDAF performance has been further improved.

Unlike Sony E mount cameras, Fujifilm X mount is quite complex in PDAF support. More than two years ago, when A7r2 introduced phase detection AF (PDAF) for adapted lenses for the first time, I spent a night to find out the key mechanism and in very short time let my Contax N-E adapter become world’s first third party smart adapter supporting PDAF on mirrorless. Now I finally find the way to make X cameras do the same when adapting EF lenses. All the PDAF points on CMOS, not only the central one, but also the others around it, are all working properly, whatever the lens is wide or tele, zoom or prime and whatever the aperture is set wide open or stopping down.

Although the firmware of smart adapter for GFX50s can be easily modified to support X mount as what some other smart adapter manufacturer probably is doing , it doesn’t support PDAF. Compared with CDAF (contrast detection AF), PDAF is a performance leap. Thus, I developed the new version specifically for X mount. I made a short video to demo the AF-C zone focusing performance when PDAF is enabled. The lens is Sigma 30/1.4 art (for EF mount) and the camera is X-T2. Remember that S30/1.4A has a bad reputation for its slow AF speed.

In addition to that, I also did some real field tests. Using a EFs 55-250/4.0-5.6 IS STM lens and X-T2 camera, I tried continuous shooting on a moving vehicle towards the camera. I set the AF mode to zone and AF-C, continuous shooting mode to CH, and shutter mode to electronic only. The lens was at 250mm/F5.6.

I shot 34 photos in less than 4 seconds with a rough speed of 10 frames per second.

As you can see, it’s not perfect. several of them were out of focus. But most, i.e. about 80%, of them were OK. I guess that’s a not bad performance for zone AF/AF-C with speed of 10 frames per second.

The Fringer EF-FX smart adapter (production version) is expected to be released on early 2018.

Fujifilm X-H1 will have Same X-Processor Pro of X-T2… Film Simulation “Eterna” X-T2 Kaizen Update Possible?

According to our sources, the Fujifilm X-H1 will have the same X-Processor Pro of the Fujifilm X-T2.

This is great news for X-Pro2, X-T2, X-T20, X100F and X-E3 owners, as it gives us hope that “Eterna“, Fujifilm’s new film simulation, will come also to those cameras via Kaizen update.

Film Simulation Kaizen Update for X-T2 & Co?

Now, film simulations are a “processor thing“.

This means that cameras featuring an older processor will not support film simulations, that have been introduced in cameras with newer processors. So, for example, the Acros film simulation on the X-T2 & Co cameras with X-Processor Pro, will never be implemented on Fuji cameras with older and slower EXR processors like the X-T1.

But since the X-H1 features the same same X-Processor Pro of the X-T2 and friends, there is hope that “Eterna” will come also to older X-Processor Pro cameras.

The green shape is the X-H1 and the white one the X-T2. So quite a size difference. The size of the X-H1 looks like something in between the X-T2 and GFX.

Oh, and if you think it’s too big, then check out how big one of the best hybrid stills/video cameras out there is, the Panasonic GH5… and it’s a M43 camera – via camera size

On the other hand, the A6500 is small and has IBIS. There are some overheating reports out there, though.

I think Fujifilm chose the bigger size, not only for better heat dissipation, but also for better ergonimics/handling/balance when used with the huge Fujinon MK cine lenses (or any other big Fujinon lens).
