Opticallimits Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 Review: “A Surprisingly Mature Product”

Viltrox 85mm f/1.8

The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 was the best selling third party lens of 2019 here on FujiRumors, and that it was a good choice.

The cusotmer reviews are mostly very positive:

Now also renowned review sites, such as opticallimits (former photozone), have declared it a great alternative to the Fujinon optics, which remain superior in terms of IQ and AF speed, but you also pay them significantly more.

The Viltrox PFU RBMH 85mm f/1.8 STM is an attractive medium tele lens for Fujifilm cameras. It is sharp across the image field – especially at medium aperture settings – and it doesn’t show any substantial weakness across the other characteristics either. Lateral CAs are low as are image distortions. There is a bit of vignetting at f/1.8 but it’s nothing out of the ordinary (on an APS-C sensor at least). A very positive aspect is the quality of the bokeh. Image highlights are nicely rendered at f/1.8 and the blur in the focus transition zones is very creamy. Bokeh fringing (LoCA) is present at large-aperture settings but that’s hardly surprising.

The build quality feels very “tanky” due to the all-metal design. Pro photographers may miss weather-sealing but that’s a different market segment anyway. Unlike other small manufacturers, Viltrox managed to implement an autofocus motor (STM = stepping motor). The speed is decent but action photography is a bit out of scope. However, such a lens is more aligned to portrait or street photography anyway.

It is quite surprising than Viltrox was capable of designing and manufacturing such a mature product as their first shot into the market. Other newcomers struggled much more during their first years (and some still do). Of course, designing a 85mm f/1.8 isn’t science fiction but getting all the required acts together at a very attractive price point is an achievement. Thus if you can’t or don’t want to pay the premium price for a Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 LM R WR, the Viltrox lens is a worthy candidate for your shopping list.

Now I can’t wait how the next Viltrox Fujifilm X autofocus lenses will perform, the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4, 33mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4.

Share

We have broken a couple of rumors, and now it’s time for a recap.

And it’s not yet over ;).

So make sure to follow FujiRumors on Facebook, Flipboard, RSS-feed, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram

Fujifilm X-T4

After our recent leaks we know:

  • shipping in March
  • not to be announced in January, but later
  • IBIS

All the rest, the 6K60P, the anamorphic ratio and all the rest, comes from a source in our Fujifilm X-T group, who also said X-T4 would come in late 2020. That’s wrong, so take the rest with a grain of salt too.

All Fujifilm X-T4 rumors here.

Fujifilm X100V

The oldest in the bunch to be rumored, already since months:

  • announcement in February
  • new lens (still 23mm)
  • it will NOT have the X-Pro3 hidden screen

All Fujifilm X100V rumors here.

Fujifilm X-T200

An X-A7 with centered viewfinder.

Fujifilm X-T4

FujiRumors is (as usual) the first and only website, who told you about the surprising Fujifilm X-T3 successor announcement (usually Fujifilm waits 2 years to refresh it, but this time they waited only 1.5 years)

Now it’s time to continue the leaks :).

I did wait to get it tripled checked, and it’s done now, so here it is: the soon to come Fujifilm X-T4 (or whatever Fuji is going to call it), will have IBIS!

This does not come surprising, though, as Fujifilm managers repeatedly said, that they are working on making the IBIS unit smaller, so that they can fit it into other (not X-H) X series cameras.

The mission has been accomplished. IBIS is now going to be part of more Fujifilm X series camera lines!

And now one more thing.

Do you remember when a member of our massive Fujifilm X-T group shared the Fujifilm X-T4 rumor with the following specs? The member claimed:

  • X-T4 with IBIS
  • expect a T4 about 1/3 of an inch thicker, and about 5-6oz heavier
  • On a good note expect 6k60 and 10bit internal
  • anamorphic ratio
  • fully articulating flippy…essentially an S1H but APSc with Fuji color and obviously much smaller
  • release end of 2020

Note that he rumored it for “end of 2020”, but this is definitely wrong. Now, I don’t want to say that also the 6K video and all other specs are wrong, but the one I can verify now, is 100% wrong.

So, take that rumored specs list with a grain of salt for now.

Fujifilm X-T200 Coming Soon

Share

I think you might have noticed, that FujiRumors unleashed the rumor storm, so definitely make sure to follow us, as this is just be beginning, and we will have fantastic weeks, with, I promise you, lots of mixed emotions ;).

Today we can finally unveil what hides behind the mysterious FF190003 camera.

It’s the Fujifilm X-T200!

  • FF190004 – Fujifilm X-T3 successor
  • FF190005 – Fujifilm X100V
  • FF190003 – Fujifilm X-T200

As we reported earlier, Fujifilm plans an announcement for February 4 (postponed from the original date in late January).

Not sure if everything will come on February 4, or if Fujifilm will split the announcements, though.

What’s sure, though, is that these are weeks, where you should not miss to read FujiRumors! :)

Fujifilm X100V and Fujifilm X-T4 Registered and Announcements on February 4

Share

Just yesterday I told you to watch out, as nokishita will soon spot a new camera registered at the radio agency, the FF190004.

Well, now it happened, as just one hour ago, nokishita made this tweet here (images below), saying

  • “FF190004” and “FF190005” were registered with China MIIT on January 8th
  • he data release date of “FF190003” registered in the FCC certification has been re-extended from January 24 to February 4

Of course FujiRumors is the only website, who knows (and already told you), what is hiding behind these code names. So everybody talking about X-T4 and X100V, knows it via FujiRumors.

Only the FF190003 is still a mystery (for you), that I hope to be allowed to unveiled soon ;).

We are talking of:

  • FF190004 – Fujifilm X-T3 successor
  • FF190005 – Fujifilm X100V
  • FF190003 – ?

Chances are, that Fujifilm decided to take it all together, and launch everything on February 4. But that’s not said, Fujifilm could also decide to make separate announcements.

And stay tuned… as more is coming soon on FujiRumors only, of course.

Don’t forget also…
