Fujifilm X-E4 still with 26 Megapixel X-Trans sensor (and Why I’m Happy with That)

Fujifilm X-E4

I noticed some speculation in the comments, on whether the Fujifilm X-E4 might introduce a new sensor generation.

But nope, it’s not going to happen. Fujifilm will put the 26 megapixel X-Trans sensor in the X-E4.

And quite frankly, despite it being 2.5 years old, it is still packed with Sony’s latest and greatest technology: phase detection pixels all over the sensor, back-side illuminated, copper wiring for even faster readout. It’s the best sensor Sony has to offer without going into more exotic (and expensive) terrain with stacked sensors (Sony A9 series), which allow even faster readout, but decrease dynamic range.

Yes, Sony has a 43 megapixel APS-C sensor in offer, but maybe that’s a bit of an overkill for APS-C. In my opinion the sweet spot for APS-C is somewhere around 32/35 Megapixel. It would allow for 8K video recording, be still supported by Fujinon glass and just offer a nice balance between file size, details, dynamic range, costs and just overall performance. For 50+ megapixel, it is probably better to go with the GFX system anyway.

As you can imagine, I am working on more details regarding the Fujifilm X-E4. If I have anything new, I’ll you know on FujiRumors soon.

Fujifilm X-T3 Discontinued and $500 Rebated Removed from Fujifilm Winter Deals List – Here is Why!

Fujifilm has Winter Offers running until January 3.

Until very recently, one of the official deals offered by Fujifilm was a $500 rebate on the Fujifilm X-T3.

As a matter of fact, at the time of this post this deal is still listed, but only at Adorama here (deal removed also from Adorama). The same deal is no longer available at BHphoto. Most importantly, it has been removed from the official deal list page of Fujifilm USA (see screenshot above, where the X-T3 is no longer listed).

So what happened? Well, a FR-reader wrote me an email and told me this:

My local store told me that the X-T3 has been discontinued. Over the weekend they also apparently stopped the $500 rebate, that in the U.S. had the camera selling for $999. The sales rep told me the intent is to let any remaining inventory in the supply chain sell at a higher price.

Down below is the list with what remains of the Fujifilm Winter deals.

Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0: Meet the “Worst” Lens of the Year that Many Want and Love ;)

XF50mm f/1.0 – Worst Lens 2020?

Recently DPRTV declared the Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0 the worst lens of 2020.

Of course this generated a heated debate. And today we are going to discuss this in a dedicated post.

Now, I think we can all agree that the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 is not the sharpest Fujinon lens. But I doubt anyone would seriously expect that from an f/1.0 lens.

I think Jonas Rask described this lens best, when he wrote:

The images coming from XF50mm f/1 R WR has those exact same undefinable traits that makes me love my XF35mm f/1.4 so much. The sharpness that is sharp, yet not overly sharp. A flattering kind of sharpness that seems more rounded, organic and less digital/clinical.

[…]You know that “magic” that everyone is referring to when talking about the old XF35mm f/1.4? […] The focus on making a character lens instead of a “perfect” lens. And that is EXACTLY what the XF50mm f/1 R WR is. A lens full of character, but not a perfect optical creation.

But being not the sharpest, does not mean that it is unusable soft at f/1.0.

On the contrary, many other reviewers praise it for its sharpness all over the frame already at f/1.0.

Let’s Look More at the Worst Lens of the Year

Now also ivanjoshualoh joined the discussion, with his article “Meet the Worst Lens of 2020“. He shows samples taken at f/1.0, and quite frankly, for being at f/1.0, I think that they look totally fine. You can see one of his samples at 200% magnifications in this instagram post and you can check out his full article here.

In the B&H Explora Top 10 Mirrorless lenses list for 2020, the Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR grabs the second spot right after the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM. Read the full list here.

Another one comes from abiggercamera, who also took at look at his XF50mmF1.0 and shared his thoughts in this post.

Last but not least, the first customer reviews at AmazonUS and BHphoto here are also pretty positive.
