Fujifilm Officially Recommends to Turn On OIS for Tripod Use on Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 and XF 200mm F2

Best Friends: OIS and Tripod

We have all grown up with the idea (some call it “myth”), that we always should turn off OIS when working on a tripod.

Also Fuji X guru Rico Pfirstinger recommends this in his top rated Fuji X eBooks (at least the ones I have read).

And indeed, I feel like it’s still a good idea to switch off OIS. And in the comments Bob Cooley tells you why you should definitely switch it off for video.

But, looking at the owner’s manuals for all X and G mount lenses, I’ve noticed that Fujifilm officially recommends to keep OIS on, even when working on a tripod, on the following two lenses:

DPRTV Fujifilm GFX100 Review for Video: No Dynamic Range/Low Light Benefits Over X-T3, but MF can Now do Pro Video Work

Fujifilm GFX100

While 99,99% of Fujifilm GFX100 owners will buy the camera for its photographic virtues (the new king of the DPReview lab tests), at the GFX100 launch Fujifilm also highlighted the video capabilities of the latest medium format GFX camera.

And sure, on paper, also the Fujifilm GFX100 video specs are impressive (10 bit internal, 400 mbps, no crop 4K, IBIS etc).

But how does it work in real life for video?

DPReview TV has tested the Fujifilm GFX100 for videos, and here are their findings:

Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 AF X Mount vs Samyang 85/1.8, Disassembly, 12 Hour Wedding and More

The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 autofocus lens is the new favorite third party lens amongst Fujifilm X shooters.

It is the 4th third party autofocus lens for Fujifilm X mount (the other three are the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro), but the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 is the first reverse-engineered one, meaning they got no help from Fujifilm at all.

A brave move by Viltrox, that seens to pay off well for the company. At least amongst FujiRumors readers, the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 is a best seller.

Well done Viltrox, and we look forward to the next three Fujifilm X mount AF lenses in the pipeline.
