Fujifilm Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

A rumor is spreading on the web, brought to us first by mirrorlessrumors: Hasselblad is about to launch a Medium Format Mirrorless Camera! The rumors so far say it will have 50MP (just like the rumored Fujifilm Medium Format Mirrorless Camera).

It’s over a year now that I tell you about Fujifilm working on a Medium Format Camera, a familiar terrain for Fujfilm, since they already have a long Medium Format Camera and Lens production tradition (for film – like the the FUJIFILM GF670.) and they also make lenses for the [shoplink 46551 ebay]Hasselblad’s H system[/shoplink].

I tell you… Fujifilm will make use of all its experience to launch a new digital Medium Format Mirrorless line. But if you don’t trust me, then I remind you the words of Fuji Manager T. Ueno, when he said herewe are in a Very Good Position to make a Medium Format Camera

If it’s true that the mirrorless Boom is slowing down (as Tony Northrup said here), then it seems that camera manufacturers are right now looking for the next fronteer: Medium Format Mirrorless. Hasselblad makes the start. It’s sure that Fujifilm will follow soon. And it’s rumored by SAR that also Sony is seriously thinking to step into this new market.

Below a list of Fujifilm Medium Format Rumors shared over the last 13 months.

stay tuned… fun times are coming :-)

Fuji Rep Invites Stores to Discount X-Pro2 since “superior X-T2” is coming + MESSAGE to Anonymous Source, Who Handled the X-T2

The “superior” Fujifilm X-T2 is Coming… Ready for X-Pro2 Sales?

Sometimes it’s a matter of being on the right place at the right moment. And this time a FR-reader was the the European Bestbuy equivalent, the tech super-store chain “Mediamarkt” just while a Fuji Rep was talking with the Seller about the X-T2.

Before I go ahead, I’ll just say that the source didn’t make up this story. You don’t have to know how I can be sure about this… just trust me that the source could proof the story is true ;)

So what did the Fuji Rep say? Well, he recommended to discount Fujifilm X-Pro2 cameras, because the Fujifilm X-T2 is coming and it will be “superior in many aspects“.

Message to a Source

I use this post to send a Message, to a reliable anonmyous Source with Nick-Name, who handled the X-T2.

Yes, I always have more questions about it. The biggest one now is: how much will the Fujifilm X-T2 cost and when will it be available?

But as you might understand, I can’t make all the question always in public via FujiRumors. Writing blog posts on FujiRumors in order to talk to each other is not really the best way, especially when it comes to delicate stuff like rumors I’m working on. I prefer these things have to happen behind the scenes before it goes online.

You could use your private email, twitter or facebook account (I’d obviously keep your identity 110% secret). Or maybe create a fake email account for this purpose.

Think about it… and in any case thanks a lot for sharing always reliable rumors. You help me a lot… and even if you decide just to use the rumor box, we will try to find a balance between the confidential rumor work behind the scenes and the public comunication. That said: a direct talk & information exchange behind the scenes would make things a lot easier for me, and I could share with you better what I’m working on.

A very great many ‘togs seem to protest at the idea of cat photos…

When the Fujifilm X-Pro2 finally landed, the internet wags quipped that the Fujifilm X-Pro1 was now only good for “cat shots and infrared conversion”

:) I did have to laugh

The thing is…

I love cats!

I realise that some find them aloof, greedy and self centred. But animals didn’t ask to be domesticated, they didn’t sign up to some mutually exclusive deal, you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Animals exist in our domesticated world because we have use for them, or because we tolerate them.

But many large urban areas have stray animals, perhaps once a pet, perhaps the offspring of a pet. Strays are NOT a Porto problem, they’re not a London problem or a Rome problem or a anywhere problem, they’re a humanistic problem.

Strays say something about our own species; and it’s not nice. Animals stuck in a neither world of not being part of human existence nor being free of it. They exist in this space because of the human world and despite the human world.

When we take a pet, we create a dependant. When we break that bond, we create a shadow.

These are not cutesy kitties, they could be… they have the capacity, but these are street creatures, discarded and dirty. Left to eek out an existence on whatever they can get.

I love cats.

And when I look into the eyes of these strays I see the struggle they’ve endured and their defiance in never giving up. This isn’t some sort of aloof detachment. This is the primordial square root of survival. Even the little indoors only kitty curled up on your bed has this ability.

These cats are not pets… To me, they’re as valid street subjects as anything else in the genre, after all, if we say that ‘street’ is the documentary of the humanistic world, then what tells our story more than the problems we create and the things we discard?

All these shot are taken with the X-Pro1 and X-T1.

Both bodies soon only to be suitable for infrared conversion, and cat shots. Perhaps even infrared cat shots :)

I realise that you may not enjoy cat shots… But hopefully you’ve seen a different side of the kitty, one which is perhaps a bit more engaging than a pampered fat cat chasing a toy or lapping up some milk…

If it’s of interest, you can see more of my work on the links below.

Warm regards
Adam

Fuji Manager: “New FUJIFILM Lens Roadmap coming this Summer”… and shows Roadmap without 120mm!

New Fujifilm Lens Roadmap Coming

So, when will Fujifilm release a new lens roadmap? According to Fujifilm Manager Justin Stailey (and also to my sources) it will come this Summer (see video at the Top of this post from minute 37:40).

Here is just a Roadmap of what we have in the line up. […] we pretty much have the majority of the needs of most photographers covered with our current lens lineup. But we are not going to stop. We plan to expand the offer. There is definitely more stuff coming. At some point in Summertime we will probably update the roadmap.

The current Fujifilm lens roadmap is out of date. It shows lenses that, according to my sources, have been scratched and it also does not include other lenses that Fuji is designing right now.

At this point it’s interesting to note, that on the Roadmap the Manager presented to the people attending the BHphoto event, there is no 120mm…. a hint that we don’t have to expect that lens to come anymore? Maybe there is some truth in the 80mm rumor ;)

In the last months, I’ve updated the original Fujifilm Lens Roadmap every time a new rumor landet in my Inbox (last update here). But it started looking so chaotic, that a kind FR-reader made a new one for us (shared at the bottom of this post).

Except for the XF23mmF2 (which should be announced in September) I have NO indications and rumors about the release of the other rumored lenses.

About the Unexpected Success of the XF35mmF2 WR + FUJIFILM’s New Lens Strategy !

Go to Minute 20:00 of the video for Tony’s Prediction about the Mirrorless Future

_ _ _

Out Of the Dark

Anyone out there, who, like me, switched to the X-system very early?

Then you’ll remember how in the first years, every financial Report of Fujifilm said the imaging division is losing money. In the first 2 years of existence, Fujifilm sold only 700,000 X-series cameras! (src- New York Times)… not really exciting numbers!

So we are all happy to read in the latest reports, that the X-series system, despite being still a niche, is selling better, and, along with the Instax World, is pushing Fujifilm’s imaging division into profits.

The New Lens Strategy

It was mainly the X-T1, to give Fujifilm hope that the dark times are over. But in the last months, there is also one lens, that is making Fujifilm very happy: the Fujifilm XF35mmF2 WR (which for a limited time costs only $299 at BHphoto / AmazonUS / FocusCamera / Adorama)

The success of the XF35mmF2 WR was far beyond any expectation. I mean, who would have bet that it would become such a best seller, when there are already two faster and great X-mount primes covering that focal length, the XF35mmF1.4 and the Zeiss 32mmF1.8?

But it happened… the 35mmF2 is selling like hot cakes and therefore made Fujifilm rethink their lens strategy! Smaller & Cheaper… that’s where the money is!

So here is a Recap of what changed in Fuji’s Lens Strategy:

  • SMALLER: the XF120mm will be dropped and Fuji will make a smaller and OIS-less XF80mm Marcro lens – Rumor here
  • SLOWER: Fujifilm has no hurry anymore to release the XF33mmF1.0 – Post here
  • WEATHER RESITANT: the upcoming small and cheap lenses will be weather resistant, just like the 23mmF2 – Rumor here
  • CHEAPER: there will be a XF50mmF2 lens, basically a cheaper version of the XF56mm and Zeiss 50mmRumor here

And where is the 200mm, huh? Or something even longer? Or a nice tilt-shift lens? And why not step on gas and give us a prestige lens like the ultra-fast XF33mmF1.0 now?

The answer is easy: they won’t sell good. These are niche lenses within the already contained Fuji X-series market and will hardly give Fuji the same profits like the XF35mmF2 WR currently does.

The Final Mirrorless Battle

As you can see in the Video I’ve shared above, Tony Northrup is confident: some MILC makers will fall, but Fujifilm will Survive the Mirrorless Battle.

A battle, that is already going on, and made his first “victim”: Samsung! And you can bet that others will follow in the next few years.

Will the next one be the Micro Four Thirds system, as Kai from DigitalRev thinks here? Or maybe even Fuji itself, if they can’t make the big breakthrough and finally go mainstream? And how sustainable is Sony’s business strategy? Will they really be able to keep up developing cameras and lenses for APS-C, Full Frame and maybe even Medium Format all at the same time? And how competitive will Canikon’s mirrorless offer be in future?

I don’t know what will happen, but if lenses like the 35mmF2, 23mmF2, 50mmF2 will help Fujifilm to grow and make more profits, then let them come… the mirrorless battle just started, and the more X-shooters there are out there (and the more they invest into the system), the brighter Fuji’s future will be.
