The World of Film Simulation: ProNeg, Astia and Provia

The 4th, 5th and 6th episode of Fuji’s film simulation is now online at Fujifilm X World.

In Episode 4 they talk about the PRONEG Film Simualtion.

“PRO Neg. The tonality is very soft, and the skin tone appears very soft. The rich tonality reflects the lighting setting perfectly. If you just press the shutter button without thinking of the final output, then it will just produce a boring flat image. The film simulation is most effective when you have clear vision of the final output. The film simulation is great for studio portraiture where you have time to think about composition, lighting, pose, and expression. […] “PRO Neg. Hi” has a harder tonality when compared with “PRO Neg STD”,”

Epsiode 5 is all about ASTIA:

ASTIA is designed to be used under little or no lighting and subject in action. The film simulation is carefully designed to express the soft skin tones and not to wash out at the high end while making the shadow end a little hard. Tonality is designed so that it is sharp enough even without the use of lighting.”

In Episode 6 they cover the film simulation PROVIA:

No matter what the subject, lighting, or the shooting environment may be, you will find the photos non-collapsed when it is taken in PROVIA. You will also probably find yourself not needing to change the settings when you shoot in PROVIA.”

We talked about Classic Chrome here and Velvia here.

Fuji’s Financial Results FY2015/3 – Imaging Division: Less Revenue but significantly Increased Profits. X-series sells strong!

 photo dasd_zpsvpsogqgu.jpg

The latest financial Reports of Fujifilm are now online. They show how Fuji was able to “significantly increase profits” of the Imaging Division especially for 2 reasons:

1
Strong Sales of the Instant Photo Systems

Instax is still the Top Seller at Fuji’s imaging division: “Sales of the instax series such as instax mini HELLO KITTY , which was launched in November 2014, and instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1, increased, as well as those of other various designs of instax films increased“.

2
Improved Profitability in Digital Camera

or
less P&S and focus on X-Series

Overall the sales in the electronic imaging business (cameras & lenses) decreased “due to reduction of compact digital camera’s lineup. But the sales of premium digital cameras X Series and interchangeable lenses were strong“. By producing less P&S cameras and focussing on the X-series, Fuji was able to “improve profitability“. So no surprise that Fujifilm says they will “expand the product lineup of X Series“.

Summary & Forecast

Though revenue decreased due to the sales decreases of digital cameras and other products (¥361.0 billion, down 3.4% from the previous FY), profits increased significantly reflecting strong sales of instant photo systems and improvement of profitability in digital camera (operating income amounted to ¥20.7 billion, significantly up ¥17.1 billion from the previous FY).”

The Forecast for 2016: “Expand sales and profits in the photo imaging business by further sales expansion of instant cameras, high-value-added printing business, and other factors. In the optical device & electronic imaging business, improve profitability by focusing on the high-value-added products.”

Less Revenue / More Operating Income

X-shooters for Nepal: Buy a Print & Help Relief Efforts in Nepal!

 photo help _zpspuxf7nwk.jpg

by X-shooter Richard Simko

I am sure all of you heard what happened on Saturday the 25th of April in Nepal. I have been to Nepal couple of times and it is a country dear to my heart. I have lot of friends there. Luckily most of them are safe however I still haven’t heard from two of my sherpa friends who were believed to be in Everest Base camp or on the mountain. Anyway, Nepal suffers. People suffer and I was wondering how I could help. Recently I have set up a small fine art print online shop. I have decided that to donate the profit from every sale until 1st August to good cause. Depending of amount of sale money will be donated to charitable organisations, NGO’s or directly to people in need. My photographs can be found at richardsimko.photos.

I shared my idea here with Patrick and he was kind enough to post this on Fujirumos so it can spread further. I am not asking you to go and buy my print. Instead I am asking you to consider selling some of your photographs and donate the profit to help Nepali people and country to bounce back from this tragedy. This is purely my personal initiative, and idea that I hope would spread around not just in Fujirumors community but much further than that. This is an opportunity to do something we all love and help the needy ones at the same time.

[admin: I hope many will help and purchase a print... I did. And if you also join this initiative by selling some of your photographs and donate the profits, drop the link in the comments]
