Fujifilm GFX 50R: The Everyday Medium Format gets First Looks, Autofocus Tests and Size Comparisons

Fujifilm GFX 50R

I just came home from another busy day at Photokina, and I played again around with the Fujifilm GFX 50R. It’s a really fine camera, and my GAS goes strong, but $4,500 still make it out of my reach. So my money is safe (I think :) ).

For rangefinder guys like me, the Fujifilm GFX 50R is surely more fun to use than the GFX 50S, also on the streets and for daily documentation of life.

Kevin Mullins and Jonas Rask also said on their live talks at Photokina, that the Fujifilm GFX 50R is a medium format they enjoy to pick up and carry around for daily shooting, much more than a bulkier Fujifilm GFX 50S, which is definitely a wonderful tool for professional work, but not as “casual” as the Fujifilm GFX 50R.

So keep in mind that performance is just the same of Fujifilm GFX 50S. What the real difference is, is the shooting experience. So I will share a few reviews down below, but none will tell you how the Fujifilm GFX 50R feels in your hands.

PhotoKina 2018: The Year DSLRs Died. What to Expect from Fujifilm and will FujiRumors be There?

images I took at photokina 2016… can you find Waldo

The Year of Mirrorless

This years’ photokina will probably the most exciting of the last 20 years.

We will assist to the death of DSLR’s (that’s it my friends, just accept it), and open the new era of mirrorless.

Paraphrasing the famous sentence from the movie Deadline we could say “that’s technology, baby, there is nothing you can do about it, nothing“.

Sure, the transition from DSLR to mirrorless won’t happen overnight. But that’s the trend. And that’s why Canon and Nikon are starting to get serious about mirrorless, too.

On this years photokina we will see the following new mirrorless cameras from Fujifilm:

Not a rumor, but regarding Fujifilm lenses, I’d not be surprised to see:

  • Fujinon GF 100-200mm F4.5-5.6
  • Fujinon GF 35mm F2.8
  • Fujinon GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5
  • GF pancake lens is not confirmed
  • and of course the XF200mmF2 and XF8-16mmF2.8

Mock-ups:

  • Fujinon XF16-80mmF4
  • Fujinon XF16mmF2.8
  • Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 (not sure)

FujiRumors @ Photokina

I am 80% sure I will be there, but if I go, I sadly I can’t be there for more than 1 or (best case) 2 days.

I was at photokina in 2016, also just for one 1 day.

In 2016, the by far busiest booth was the one of Fujifilm, but, between me and you, the most beautiful one was without a doubt the one of Leica (don’t tell Fuji, but I’ve spend hours (!!!) there).

This year, Fujifilm won’t have such an easy game to play like in 2016. The competition is strong, and that’s good for us customers.

The biggest problem?

Well, on the same Photokina days, there is also worlds largest beer festival, the Oktoberfest in Munich (I’ve never been there). So I stand in front of tough decisions: Oktoberfest or Photokina? Life can be so cruel!!!

Let me know in the poll, where I should go ;)

FUJIFILM Should NOT go FULL FRAME you Say + Advantages of APS-C (and MF)

Specs are Fun, but don’t let them take Control over You: Keep up Watching at the (Photography) World primarily Artistically, rather than Technically

You Don’t Want Full Frame Fujifilm

Here are the results of the poll we launch a few days ago here.

77% of you voted that you don’t want a Full Frame interchangeable line by Fujifilm.

  • 43% don’t want FF at all
  • 19% don’t want FF in MILC, but they would like an FF Fujifilm X200
  • 15% don’t want FF, but a APS-H sensor that is still compatible with existing mount and lenses

So basically for 62% of you there is no need to have FF on Fuji’s MILC lineup, and my impression is that those, who vote for APS-H, care most about compatibility with existing lenses, hence, if APS-H is not possible, they’d rather prefer to keep APS-C than go FF  and invest all over again in a new system.

Only 12% of FR-readers are Pro full frame, whereas other 6% voted for the option to put a FF sensor in the G mount, making the GFX a hybrid system.

So, if Fujifilm listens, than at least here on FR the advice is clear: continue to improve, where you are already the best in the market, APS-C and Medium Format, and avoid the FF slaughter between Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and maybe even Olympus.

First Look Review: Fujinon GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR

Reaching Out: GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR

The new GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR and the optional GF1.4x TC WR teleconverter lens bring genuine telephoto capability to the evolving Fujifilm GFX medium format system. Featuring impressive detail resolution and three-dimensional subject rendering, the rather moderately priced GF250mm equals a 198 mm lens in 35 mm “full-frame” terms, and its reach can be stretched to 350 mm by attaching the new 1.4x teleconverter. Fujifilm’s GF product introductions are completed by two macro expansion tubes that work with almost all existing GF lenses and can turn the GF120mmF4 into a true 1:1 macro lens.

So is it all worth it? You should be able to decide for yourself after reading this first-look review based on pre-production samples of the GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR, GF1.4x TC WR, MCEX-18G WR and MCEX-45G WR.
