Royal Observatory Greenwich Assigns Astronomy Photographer of the Year Award to Fujifilm X-T4 Shooter Shuchang Dong

Do you remember when back in 2020 photographers using Fujifilm APS-C cameras took away all the most important World Press Photo Awards?

And this happened, despite talented “internet reviewers” showing us with their stunningly artistic test shots that only full frame can produce professional results.

And honestly, I totally agree for example with Sir. Jared, who delivered this very in depth and elaborated answer to a guy, who wanted to switch to Fujifilm: “Fuji, LOL?”

I mean, how can you argue with that?

And yet, despite all the effort reviewers put into telling us that only full frame can deliver professional results, it keeps happening!!!

It keeps happening that Fujifilm X shooters out there win prestigious photography awards.

In fact, the The Royal Observatory Greenwich assigned the Astronomy Photo Award 2021 to Shuchang Dong, who took this wonderful image with his Fujifilm X-T4 in Tibet during a total solar eclipse in mid-2020. Here is what the Royal Greenwich Observatory had to say about the image:

This image demonstrates both the beauty and simplicity of an eclipse, but also the science behind this astronomical event. Our sun can still be seen as a ring circling the Moon as it passes in front of the Sun, and mountains on the lunar surface can be seen hiding some of this light on the lower righthand portion of the image. This is a stunning achievement!”

For a moment I had a doubt, that maybe it’s more important to spend time to go out and take pictures, trying to be in the right moment at the right spot. But no, definitely not. All that matters is the gear you use ;).

Mirrorless Camera Market Share 2019: Fujifilm Third after Sony and Canon and a Quick Look into the 2020 Market Share

You might remember how back in November 2019, we shared the worldwide mirrorless camera market share data for 2018 here (for the DSLR+mirrorless data check out this article).

Now a year has passed, and Techno System Research, a major marketing research company located in Japan, has published the data for 2019.

So what changed between 2018 and 2019? Let’s compare:

These are the Top Sellers 2020 on FujiRumors

In 2019, smartphones killed the entry level market forcing Fujifilm to discontinue the X-T200 and also the Fujifilm X-A7 in a record-time of just a few months after release.

And in 2020, a worldwide pandemic and global recession had a terrible impact on sales of mid/high-end gear, which was the segment Fujifilm (and other brands) were focusing on to escape the stranglehold of smartphones.

And yet, it’s not all bad for Fujifilm.

In fact, statistics show that Fujifilm was the one brand, who could resist best to COVID-19, with just a slight decrease in sales compared to the previous year. Also Fujifilm managers confirmed that Fujifilm is holding on better than other brands in 2020, especially thanks to the Fujifilm X-T4 and X100V.

And in fact, the X-T4 and X100V where the best selling cameras also here on FujiRumors in 2020.

But let’s look at it closer and see which gear was the most successful among the FujiRumors community.

Some time ago, I read with interest the article in which photographers discussed what gear they miss for photographing wildlife in existing Fujifilm offer. They mostly mentioned various lenses of different focal lengths and apertures, which could give some people the impression that it is almost not possible to photograph wildlife with the Fujifilm X system. Therefore, I decided to summarize my almost five years of experience in this field. I hope to inspire and encourage some photographers who consider getting into wildlife photography with Fujifilm gear.

Photokina GAME OVER: Suspended “Until further Notice”

The Photokina team just announced that photokina has been “suspended until further notice”.

Originally, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Photokina 2020 had been canceled and postponed to May 2022. But apparently there won’t be any photokina in 2022, and probably never again at this point.

I have been to photokina a few times (2016 report here – 2018 report here) and I always hugely enjoyed it. It’s sad to see this show ending. But to me, the error was made when they dropped their 2 years cycle and decided to take place every year in May. It was the wrong answer to a real problem.

Fujinon XF Wildlife Photography Lenses Needed, Base ISO 100, Firmware Wishes and More – FR-Readers Wishlist Corner

Overall, there seems to be a strong wish by the FR-community for longer primes.

But we know the stellar Fujinon XF200mm f/2.0 did not sell well, and hence it’s obvious that Fujifilm is now a bit reluctant to invest further in long lenses.

But keep in mind, the XF200mmF2.0 comes with a 1.4x teleconverter designed specifically for this lens, which transforms the XF200mmF2 lens basically in a 280mmF2.8 lens. So, with 1 single lens, here is what you get:

  • XF 200mmF2.0 = full frame 280mmF2.8 (f/2.8 DOF equivalent)
  • XF 280mmF2.8 = full frame 420mmF4.2 (f/4.2 DOF equivalent)

World’s First F1.0 Autofocus Lens for Mirrorless Cameras

As the world’s first autofocus F1.0 lens made for any mirrorless system, including full-frame, XF50mm F1.0 brings more light to the sensor than any previous XF lens, making it possible for the autofocus to operate at -7EV luminance level. The previous limit of -6EV luminance level was achieved using lenses with a maximum aperture of F1.4, X Series users now have fast and precise low-light autofocus, even in near-darkness. With the added benefits of on-sensor Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), Face/ Eye AF and a powerful DC motor, precise and fast autofocus at shallow depths of field is now a possibility.

Incredibly Shallow Depth-of-Field

The XF50mm F1.0 R WR consists of 12 lens elements in nine groups and also contains one aspherical element and two ED elements to achieve optimum control of spherical aberration. Used at or near to its maximum F1.0 aperture, XF50mmF1.0 R WR can produce an astonishingly narrow depth-of-field. Its precision-engineered, rounded diaphragm produces large, smooth bokeh for a professional look, allowing photographers to create portraits with a striking simplicity and an almost three-dimensional quality with wonderful edge-to-edge sharpness. Photographers can use this new power in selective focus to keep only the subject’s eyes in focus and make captivating close-up character studies. But it’s not just for portraits. Take this lens out onto the street or into a lifestyle session and one can turn cluttered locations into clean backdrops with unrivaled subject separation.

Great in low-light

The very wide maximum aperture on XF50mmF1.0 R WR means there are more options when it comes to making images in low-light conditions. At night, or in darkened interiors, XF50mmF1.0 R WR offers the widest apertures yet seen on an XF lens, allowing more light to be drawn in to make an image. XF50mmF1.0 R WR lens also easily achieves fast shutter speeds that freeze movement and keep ISO settings lower for detail-rich results. Alternatively, combine high ISO settings with the F1.0 aperture for incredible versatility and use in other low-light applications like astrophotography.

Precise Focus

To make the most of its super-shallow depth-of-field, focusing must be precise. As a result, XF50mmF1.0 has a focus ring that is eight times more accurate than any previous XF lens. This makes it possible to change the focus from the minimum focusing distance to infinity very precisely. For this, XF50mm F1.0 R WR uses 120o of rotation in its focusing ring to let users focus manually without error – and achieve accurate focus when using an X Series camera’s Focus Peaking and Focus Assist modes. The 120o of rotation also makes autofocus movements notably precise and deliberate, while the lens’s engineering is designed to minimise focus shift effects when making images.

Weather resistant

This lens is sealed in 11 locations to protect against moisture and dust, as well as being capable of use in temperatures down to -10°C
