Fujifilm X-T2 Vs. X-T1 In Depth Comparison

_ _ _

If you think the Fujifilm X-T2 outperforms the good old X-T1 under just every aspect, well, then you are mostly right. But the X-T1 is not bad at all… and in fact it might do a few things still better than the X-T2, at least according to the very comprehensive in depth comparison at mirrorlesscomparison.

A short summary for those, who are in a hurry right now… but as soon as you have time, make sure to check out the full comparison here:

  • X-T2: Adobe handles 24MP files better than 16MP files
  • Skin Tones (jpeg): X-T1 Jpeg has more natural rendering. X-T2 has a greener tint. “It seems that the X-T2 requires more tweaks to get better results than the X-T1 for skin tones and white balance.”
  • X-T2 preserves Highlights better
  • When you push your post-processing to the limit (e.g. recovering 5 stops in low light) […] the X-T1 displays less noise because of the lower megapixel count
  • X-T2 can show purple flare and a grid artefact in backlit situations (unlikely to happen with X-T1). The reviewer says: “Personally I don’t think it is a major issue: it happens only in backlit situations, when the camera is shooting at a precise angle in comparison to the light rays and the grid appears only if there is purple flare. Usefully, the purple flare can easily be detected in the EVF while shooting and sometimes even the grid will appear on screen. The solution is to simply adjust the composition ever so slightly by tilting up or down to eliminate the purple flare.”
  • X-T2 more solid build and improved controls (joystick, button locking mechanism, 3 way tilting screen etc)
  • X-T2 brigher, more contrasty and vivid EVF with better refresh rate
  • ISO: “Concerning noise ratio performance, I didn’t find much of a difference with the new sensor. The amount of noise seems to be very similar despite the increased resolution of the X-T2.”
  • Single AF Speed: with new lenses, X-T2 has a small advantage over X-T1. With older lenses, X-T2 focusses visibly faster.
  • Eye and Face detection: More reliable on X-T2
  • Continous AF: “X-T1 isn’t far behind its successor“. However, AF-custom settings “add precision to your work and raise your chances of success
  • Battery life similiar, although the the X-T2 seems to last longer when shooting in continuous mode

Fujifilm XF23mmF2 WR: “One Of the Nicest Lenses I’ve Ever Used. Excellent Sharpness (except wide-open at close distances)”

Evidently Something compared the XF23mmF2 with the XF23mmF1.4. They really love XF23mmF2 WR and among the other say:

  • Really nice lens for street and video
  • Excellent Aperture Ring
  • Silent and Super Fast AF
  • excellent sharpness, even wide open in the corners
  • images get soft when focussing at close distance wide open
  • Bokeh of 23/1.4 is smoother
  • “one of the nicest lenses I’ve ever owned“.

– First Walk with Fuji 23 mm f2 – Mother of Lenses ! at hendriximages: “this IMO is THE must-have lens for every Fuji shooter – if you can only have one lens (like the “desert island lens”), this is it ! You get stellar image quality, it´s fast, silent, compact, light, water resistant & ain´t got no OVF intrusion – at a very reasonable price.

– XF23mmF2: Kevin Mullins Initial Thoughts at f16.click: “The AF speed is incredible.  And I mean incredible to the point that sometimes I have to wonder if in fact the AF has done anything. […] The fact of the matter is, in the low light situations I find myself in a lot, I will end up resorting to the F1.4 lens. The good thing of course, is that for the rest of the day (which is about 90%), I’ll be using the smaller and lighter F2 lens exclusively. This lens is perfect for street photography and perfect for almost all of my wedding photography.”

Fujifilm Instax Mini Monochrome Reviews: “It’s fun, but it Has Green/Yellow Color Tint.”

Fujifilm Instax Monochrome Review

Fujifilm’s new Monochrome film just hit the market and it’s the Nr.1 best selling Film on AmazonUS.

And if you are considering to buy it, then you might check out the first reviews on the web. Amazon Customer MiRSD said here:

While the film is Black and White.. I found it to not be true black and white. It has tints of other colors in it (most noticeable, a greenish tint). This sometimes happens when you have a contrast with the black and white but I do wonder if this is true Black and White film or if fuji simply re-worked the color film (as has been hinted at) which is causing this. I was a bit disappointed as I did want a true black and white film without any other color tints.

This is confirmed also by Photography Concentrate with Lauren & Rob on their youtube channel here:

When you are photographing scenes with strong yellow and green tones, you actually can see a bit of that yellow/green coming through

Fuji X-T2 Vs. Sony A7SII Video Feature: “Fujifilm X-T2 in Same Class of Best Mirrorless Video Cameras”

fuji-x-t2-sony-a7sii

The Videographers over at Cinema5d compared the Video Function of the Fujifilm X-T2 with the Sony A7SII. In their comparison here they say:

  • Dynamic Range: 12 stops of usable dynamic range on the Fujifilm X-T2. This is very similar to the rating of the Sony a7S II and [shoplink 49986 ebay]Canon C300 mark II[/shoplink]. Many videographers today praise the Canon C300 mark II for its dynamic range qualities and when we take a closer look, the Fujifilm X-T2 isn’t far behind.
  • Image Quality 4K: This is where the Fujifilm X-T2 blows away most other cameras we have tested. The image of the X-T2 is very homogenous, clean and has a high resolution that dissolves lots of detail with a nice filmic grain. […] it offers slightly more detail than the Sony a7S II and seems to have better aliasing properties than both the Canon C300 mark II and Panasonic VariCam 35
  • Image quality in HD is not as impressive as in 4K mode. It is comparable to the Sony a7S II, but unfortunately there is also a lot of aliasing which creates lots of moire artefacts in contrasty image areas
  • Rolling Shutter on the X-T2 is less pronounced than on the a7S II.
  • Low Light: The Sony a7S II is an absolute miracle when it comes to lowlight performance. In comparison, the Fujifilm can’t reach the same high ISO’s but holds up well until ISO 3200, which is not bad in comparison to other mirrorless video cameras.
