Fujifilm Releases Kaizen Firmware Updates for Fujifilm GFX100, GFX50R and GFX50S
Fujifilm has released firmware updates for all their Fujifilm GFX cameras.

The firmware update Ver.2.00 from Ver.1.03 incorporates the following issues:
New Features Guide: English, Français, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Nederland, Polski, Svenska, Norsk, Dansk, Pусский, Suomi, 中文简, 中文繁體, 한국어, ภาษาไทย, Arabic
Expanding the use of outstanding image technology based on unique color reproduction
1) Addition of the new Film Simulation modes below.
・“CLASSIC Neg” mode, simulating color negative film traditionally chosen for snapshots.
・“ETERNA Bleach Bypass” mode, which simulates the film processing technique of the same name.
2) “Color Chrome Blue” is added, which adds depth to color and tonal reproduction in blue skies and other primarily blue subjects.
3) Additional functions of GRAIN EFFECT (SIZE, ROUGHNESS).
Improving autofocus performance
1) Fast and highly-accurate phase-detection AF even in low-light conditions at -5EV.
2) Improvement of the Face / Eye AF performance.
The face / eye detection accuracy and stability are improved when shooting multiple people, so as to make portrait photography easier than ever before.
3) Auto mode will be added to focus bracketing.
Specify the starting and ending points and shooting interval, and the camera can automatically determine the number of frames and steps required.
Enabling video recording control from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications
Combining the GFX100 with Gimbal / Drone that supports this function, will allow users to start / stop video recording, specify exposure settings for video (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation), and make manual focus adjustments.(*1)

1) The firmware will allow users to adjust exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation) for still images from a computer when using software that supports some tether-shooting functions.
2) More photo-editing applications will support the import of rating information, assigned in camera.
3) “COMPRESSED” is added to RAW RECORDING.
Features RAW video data output to ATOMOS NINJA V field monitor-recorder(*6)
GFX100 will be able to output maximum 4K/29.97P(*7) 12bit RAW video data using HDMI to an ATOMOS NINJA V, in Apple ProRes RAW. New firmware for NINJA V will be released by ATOMOS. RAW video data gives maximum flexibility for exposure adjustment or color grading in post-production for professional videographers. Also, simultaneous output of RAW with Film Simulation / F-Log / Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) is also available.
*6:GFX100 can record ProRes RAW only with ATOMOS NINJA V (as of June 30th 2020).

As you know, the upcoming Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 specs have already leaked here.
We wait for nokishita to leak the images in the next few days, and as soon as it happens, I’ll report about it on FujiRumors.
Of course there will be a live blogging. When exactly? Well… let’s say you should just trust my sixth sense. I will start the live blog 0.01 seconds after the lens has been announced, don’t worry about that at all. ;)
The Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5 equals to a much loved focal length among Fujifilm APS-C X-shooters, the 16mm (in terms of primes, there are the XF16mm f/1.4, and the compact XF16mm f/2.8).
If we want to be precise, the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5, converted in other formats, is about:
- Full Frame: 23mm f/2.8
- APS-C: 16mm f/1.8
To me, that’s a very nice focal length.
The GF30mm f/3.5 also seems to be well balanced in terms of price and size, as you can see from the leaks here and from the size comparison with the Fujinon GF23mm f/4 and the Fujinon GF 45mm f/2.8 we made in this post.
The Advantage of GF lenses
Fujinon GF lenses are about the top lenses you can get on the market.
And in fact, one crucial advantage of medium format GF lenses over full frame or APS-C lenses, is that they can be designed for much higher resolution than lenses for smaller formats.
This is why, if sharp images with tons of detail is what you are looking for, then the best and most future proof system you can buy into (without breaking the bank), is the GFX system.
I am sure the new Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 will keep the excellent G mount tradition, and deliver spectacular results, too.

Olympus Drops its Camera Business: Farewell to My First Mirrorless Love, and Could Oly-Shooters Find a New Love in Fujifilm (Like Me)?
It was a wonderful summer… but just “almost” perfect.
I packed my backpack, squeezed in my tent, my gear, and decided to discover Eastern Europe all alone.
The wild cliffs in the North of Bulgaria, the fascinating beauty of the Albanian Alps (Albania must be the most underrated country in Europe… run to visit it!), the deep forests of Montenegro, the stunning Croatian Coast.
I won’t bother you will all the wonderful memories I have from that summer, from waking up in my tent and all alone enjoy sunrise at the top of the Popluks, or the old Albanian shepherds offering me a water on the way to Montenegro, or even the people, living in the natural caves on the cliffs of Yaylata, who offered me to stay overnight and we ended up getting seriously drunk with Rakia brandy… and so many more precious moments.
At this point of the story, all you need to know, is that everything made me happy… everything but one: carrying too much gear around.
On the ferry that brought me from Croatia back to my home, Italy, I took a decision: I will travel lighter from now on!
Long story short:
I was one of the first to jump on the mirrorless train, and I did it with an Olympus EP-1.
So yes, Olympus was my first mirrorless love.
My Olympus EP-1 was with me on a big South America travel and it also filmed my 45 feet (14 meter) cliff jump in Santo Domingo.
Of course my mirrorless journey did not end here.
I tried the Panasonic mirrorless system, but I simply loved Olympus more.
And just when I was sure I’d switch back to Olympus, a brand called “Fujifilm” started releasing mirrorless cameras. Well, I guess you know how the story ended in this case ;).
But you know… you never forget your first love, which is why I will be forever grateful to Olympus and for what it meant in my photographic journey.
Olympus brought back lightness into my photography… Fujifilm just added a bit more fun to it.
And it fills me with sadness, to see Olympus announcing today that they will pull out from the digital camera market.
Sure, I’ve followed all the struggles, but I was hoping Olympus could somehow turn it around… but evidently they couldn’t.
So what now?
Many Olympus shooter will probably just stick for many years to come with the gear they have, and that’s fantastic. But there will be also many others, who probably feel that this might be the time to look around for some other system.
To those Olympus shooters, looking around for other options now, I can say that I was one of you in the past, and I found a new home in Fujifilm.
I know compactness is one of the main reasons why you rightfully stayed with Olympus so far, but I can tell you, that APS-C still allows for fairly small cameras and lenses (my X-E3 with my XF27mm is a wonderful combo). Many of you value also the retro look (see Olympus Pen-F), and Fuji has plenty of that to pick from.
It’s of course a free world, and only you know what is best for you.
But if some of you will join the X system, it will be a bit like getting my old family back.
With that said, I think we all owe Olympus a big thanks for what they did in their camera business, pushing innovations like class leading IBIS or Live-ND feature and more. There is a lot other companies, Fujifilm included, can learn, if they look at Olympus.
