Eye Autofocus Tested: Fujifilm is Worse vs Sony vs Canon vs Nikon… but…

Eye AF Comparison

Hidema shared a follow up to his this eye AF comparison between the following cameras:

In his original post, we critiqued the fact that he used the slower focusing XF 35mm f/1.4 lens.

So, Hidema listened, and, as spotted by our friends at CanonWatch, they now shared a follow up video, re-testing the eye AF.

But…

Hidema writes he used “all camera default settings, except eye-AF on“.

This would mean that high performance mode (or boost mode) was OFF, hence the slower autofocus.

Today I talked to Hidema, and he was not sure about boost mode. So he contacted the Fujifilm employee, who helped him to perform this test, and apparently he has been told that boost mode was ON.

One more, important, thing:

Fujifilm has just announced they will release two firmware updates in December and January for Fujifilm X-T3.

The new firmware will bring these 3 significant autofocus improvements, and I expect the results to improve significantly.

The Results

Hidema made 6 different tests.

For your convenience, I have extracted practical screenshots of the results fo the 6 different tests as well as the average results and the time the cameras needed to reacquire focus after the subject returned into the frame.

OVERALL RESULTS

  1. Sony – 95.27%
  2. Nikon – 87.66%
  3. Canon – 87.00%
  4. Fujifilm – 70.72%

Fujifilm X-T3, Nikon Z6, Canon EOS R and Sony A9 Soon Outdated Eye-Autofocus Comparison

Eye AF Comparison

Here is an Eye-AF comparison video between the Fujifilm X-T3, Nikon Z6, Canon EOS R and Sony A9.

It looks like they used the slower Fujinon XF35mm f/1.4 for this test, and it is also kind of pointless to discuss the Fujifilm X-T3 eye-AF at this stage, since a major improvement is coming via firmware in April, and the first reports are very promising.

So, in a few weeks, this test will already be obsolete and outdated, and we hope they will repeat the test again.

Fujifilm X-T30 vs Sony A6400, A6500 and vs Canon EOS RP, Nikon Z6, Sony A7iii

Fujifilm X-T30 – Fair vs Unfair Comparisons

The Fujifilm X-T30 has been announced yesterday, and hence it’s already time for comparisons… all kind of comparisons, fair and unfair ones ;).

We will compare the Fujifilm X-T30 to other APS-C cameras like the Sony A6400, Sony A6500, Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-T20, and then compare it to full frame Canon EOS RP, Nikon Z6 and Sony A7iii.

BHphoto allows you to make your own specs comparisons. All you have to do is to search on BHphoto for a camera and check the box “add to compare” under the product on the search page. You can pick up to four cameras.

Click above to see the unfair comparison (compared to Full Frame), and below you find the fair one (compared to APS-C).

DPReviewTV Best and Worst of 2018: Fujifilm X-T3 Beats Sony A7III and Nikon Z6, but Fujifilm X-T100 and XF10 Fail

Best Gear 2018

Chris and Jordan from DPReviewTV just published their best and worst gear 2018 epsiode.

The GOOD News:

The Fujifilm X-T3 wins the award for the best camera of 2018, beating the full frame Sony A7III and Nikon Z6.

The Fujifilm X-T3 has already been declared best camera of 2018 by many big youtubers and blogs. Check out our recent best of 2018 overview here.

The BAD News:

The Fujifilm X-T100 has been declared worst video camera of 2018, with a useless 4K. The Fujifilm XF10 is the thrid worst camera of 2018. Bad and unreliable focussing. Slow, laggy.

Dear Fujifilm, this is what happens if you put an old and slow processor in cameras that otherwise would have a very nice sensor.

The MISSING News:

Strangly, not a single Fujinon lens makes it into the list.

I believe the Fujinon XF200mmF2 would have deserved a top spot, and not to forget the Fujinon XF8-16mmF2.8 or the Fujinon GF250mmF4.

And maybe also the medium format Fujifilm GFX50R should have gotten at least an honorable mention.

  2. Sony A7III
  3. Nikon Z6

WORST CAMERA 2018

MIRRORLESS WARS Part 2: Fujifilm vs Canon, Nikon, Sony and Panasonic by Tony Northrup

Mirrorless Wars

Back in August, Tony and Chelsea Northrup have posted their thoughts about the so-called mirrorless war, where they basically predicted success for full frame, and said Fujifilm will remain a niche product, because it’s only APS-C and they don’t have super fast glass to match full frame DOF. You can see the summary of the video here.

Did the release of the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GFX 50R made them more optimistic about Fujifilm’s future?

And did the Nikon Z7, Nikon Z6 and Canon EOS R keep up with the hype and hopes? And what about the Panasonic S1 and S1R?

Here some key points:
