Eye Autofocus Tested: Fujifilm is Worse vs Sony vs Canon vs Nikon… but…

Eye AF Comparison

Hidema shared a follow up to his this eye AF comparison between the following cameras:

In his original post, we critiqued the fact that he used the slower focusing XF 35mm f/1.4 lens.

So, Hidema listened, and, as spotted by our friends at CanonWatch, they now shared a follow up video, re-testing the eye AF.

But…

Hidema writes he used “all camera default settings, except eye-AF on“.

This would mean that high performance mode (or boost mode) was OFF, hence the slower autofocus.

Today I talked to Hidema, and he was not sure about boost mode. So he contacted the Fujifilm employee, who helped him to perform this test, and apparently he has been told that boost mode was ON.

One more, important, thing:

Fujifilm has just announced they will release two firmware updates in December and January for Fujifilm X-T3.

The new firmware will bring these 3 significant autofocus improvements, and I expect the results to improve significantly.

The Results

Hidema made 6 different tests.

For your convenience, I have extracted practical screenshots of the results fo the 6 different tests as well as the average results and the time the cameras needed to reacquire focus after the subject returned into the frame.

OVERALL RESULTS

  1. Sony – 95.27%
  2. Nikon – 87.66%
  3. Canon – 87.00%
  4. Fujifilm – 70.72%

For the full results one by one, check out the screenshots and the video below.

Fujifilm X-T2 Marked as Discontinued – Farewell to Fujifilm’s Best Seller!

Fujifilm X-T2

The Fujifilm X-T2 is now marked as discontinued at BHphoto here and also at Adorama.

You can still find it in other stores, for example the silver version is still available at Focuscamera, but the inevitable is happening: as the X-T2 is no longer in production, the stock is now clearing out.

So we have to say goodby, to one of Fujifilm’s most legendary and important digital cameras, the Fujifilm X-T2.

Some of you might remember, how the New York Times reported here that Fujifilm sold only 700,000 cameras in the first 2 years of its existence.

X100, X-Pro1, X-E1, X10 and other cameras could never really go mainstream.

However, things changed starting from January 2014, with the Fujifilm X-T1. It was a big hit, and the Fujifilm X-T2 even topped its sales, becoming Fuji’s most successful X series camera ever.

The X-T line is what keeps the X series alive, and currently the Fujifilm X-T3 is going even better than any of its predecessors.

So, ode to the glorious Fujifilm X-T2. May the success of this line continue for many more years to come.

New Fujifilm Financial Results: Instax Declines, Mirrorless Suffers, Revenue Down 12.4% but Fujifilm GFX100 Sells Strong!

Fujifilm Fiscal Year Report

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and others have already reported their financial results.

Most of them are devastating bad. Sony is doing best, even though even Sony has to record a -3,4% sale decrease.

And Fujifilm?

Well, Fujifilm now published their financial results for the this quarter (ends September 30, 2019) and the numbers are not good either*.

Fujifilm’s cashcow Instax keeps slowing down, and digital camera sales suffer strong. All this results in a revenue decrease for the imaging division of 12.4%.

But Fujifilm remains optimistic and says:

we will further enhance the sales by providing products with competitive advantages utilizing our unique technologies, and by running effective promotions to achieve a performance target.

The only camera Fujifilm mentions clearly positively, is the Fujifilm GFX100, which enjoyed “strong sales“. And that must be right, since 6 months after announcement, the camera is still hard to find on the market.

FujiRumors recommends:

Dear Fujifilm, do you know that plan not to release any Fujifilm X-H2 not even in 2020? Forget that! Give us the Fujifilm X-H2 now with Samsung/Fujifilm ISOCELL+ sensor technology, and you’ll see the numbers go positive again. And a Fujifilm X-T4 with IBIS could help, too! Hurry up!

* As it always leads to confusion, we remind fellow readers that the Japanese fiscal year 2020 is divided as follows:
   – 1st quarter: April to June 2019 (revenue down 15%)
   – 2nd quarter: July to September 2019 (revenue down 12.4%)
   – 3rd quarter: October to December 2019 (to be determined)
   – 4rd quarter: January to March 2020 (to be determined)

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Top Selling Camera on FujiRumors in October + Top Selling Lenses & More

TOP 3 SELLING…

Top Accessories / Bags

Top Fujifilm Series Cameras

Despite the crazy X-H1 rebate and the big X-T3 savings, the Fujifilm X-Pro3 stood its ground, and, at least here on FujiRumors, enjoyed a good start. But sure, once the launch-frenzy settles down, the X-T3 will claim its top spot again.

Top Fujinon X Lenses

Top Fujifilm GFX Gear

All Fujinon GF lenses (except for GF50mm f/3.5) are now heavily discounted. See the full list of discounted GF lenses here.

Turns out FR-readers prefer either very fast lenses (GF110/2) or the flexibility of zooms.

Top X Mount Third Party Lenses/Adapters

The fire-sale on the Mitakon 35/0.95 pushed the lens back on top. The Viltrox 85/1.8 remains stable in the list.

Top Software

  1. Capture One Pro 12
  2. Luminar 4
  3. ON1 Photo RAW

Capture One Pro 12 is on an unstoppable victory parade, being by a very (!!!) large margin your top choice when it comes to RAW editing software. Nothing comes close it, even though Luminar 4 is on a worthy second place (but still worlds away from Capture One Pro).

As I told you, I myself left Adobe forever, to go all in with Capture One Pro 12.

Fujifilm X-Pro3: An Unforced Error or A Sign of Love for Photographers?… and Why Oscar Wilde Thinks the X-Pro3 is a Smart Move ;)

X-Pro3: Unforced Error or Great Intuition?

Oscar Wilde said that “there is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about“.

Well, given the massive buzz over the last few weeks surrounding the Fujifilm X-Pro3, we can definitely say that Fujifilm avoided the worst: not being talked about!

And believe me, if the X-Pro3 would have just been an X-Pro2 with X-T3 specs, the reaction on the web would have been: “ok… nice… next!”

With Fujifilm’s bold and polarizing hidden LCD screen, the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is now on everyone’s lips (and Oscar Wilde thinks that’s already good).

Alone here on FujiRumors we got thousands (!!!) of comments in just a few days, all discussing the new LCD screen!

But the buzz surrounding the X-Pro3 is big everywhere, not only here on FujiRumors.

Fujifilm X-Pro3: Top 10 Things You Might have Missed – Post Launch Coverage

What a massive live blogging that was!

So many X-Pro3 first looks have been shared on the web, and we collected them all in our epic live blogging or read the full press release here.

And while we all know about the bigger and better hybrid viewfinder, the new computational photography features, the hidden LCD screen and so forth, I thought that in due to the huge flood of information I pick out a 10 things, that you might have missed.

They all come from the various first look reviews we have collected here:

  1. The little sub monitor on the back of the X-Pro3 screen screen is not backlit. Hence difficult to see in the dark. On the other hand, it distracts you less in low light
  2. front dial no longer clickable
  3. the DURA X-Pro3 versions are fingerprint magnets, but Lee Zavitz says it gives it an extra retro touch that people could actually like… and the extra coating keeps scratches off
  4. if you use adapted lenses, you can now name the lens in camera, and that name will be stored into the EXIF data
  5. focus peaking now offers a yellow overlay option
  6. six customizable buttons (including AE/AF lock and q button that can be assigned to something else) + four swipe functions on screen
  7. the new HDR computational photography feature works handheld. It stitches the JPEGs automatically, but also saves the RAW files so you can stitch them together by yourself in post
  8. New focus bracketing interface: determine your far and near frame, and camera automatically detects how many frames it needs to shoots based on your aperture and focal length
  9. X-Pro3 can output tiff files in 8 or 16 bit via interal RAW converter
  10. Q menu can be transparent, so you see the effect of the changes you apply in real time. Also, the Q-menu isn’t locked to the dedicated Q button anymore, and can be assigned to whatever you wish
  11. Maxiumum 4K @ 30P at 4:2:0 F-log in 10 bit (like X-T30). No HDMI output. Continuous shooting speed of X-T3
  12. the EVF improvements influenced negatively the OVF: Instead of having the X-Pro2 0.36x and 0.60x magnification modes, the X-Pro3 splits the difference with a fixed 0.52x magnification
  13. the regular black X-Pro3 will ship on November 29, and the X-Pro3 DURA versions on December 13

Turns out we have 13 points ;).
