Photokina 2020: Nikon, Leica and Olympus Drop Out! And Where is Fujifilm?

As you know, I have been to photokina two times (2016 report here – 2018 report here).

Both times it was fantastic, just for the sheer magnitude of the event.

But then, in my opinion, Photokina did an error: they dropped their 2 years cycle and decided to take place every year in May.

I immediately disagreed with decision, and when I said on FujiRumors, that Photokina will now become a smaller, regional show, many in the comments critiqued my idea, saying that Photokina is Photokina, and will always remain the go to place for all manufacturers (and camera vloggers/bloggers).

But at some point I remember even Fujifilm US manager Steve saying that Fujifilm organized big product launches in conjunction with Photokina, but that will be no longer be the case.

Well, turns out I was right… and actually seems to be even worse than I thought.

In fact, Photokina writes:

“We look forward to strong demand and applications from both the new and the classic segments of companies like Canon, CEWE, GoPro, Sony, Panasonic, Kodak Alaris, Sigma, Tamron, Carl Zeiss, Hasselblad, Hahnemühle, Arri, Rode Mikrophones, DJI and Insta360”, says Christoph Werner, Vice President of Koelnmesse. These are contrasted by cancellations, including from Leica, Nikon and Olympus.“

Leica, Nikon and Olympus dropped out of the show. That’s a huge loss for Photokina. Especially Leica and Nikon always had massive booths.

Still on board are Sony, Sigma, Panasonic, Canon and others.

And Fujifilm?

Well, the official Photokina press release does not yet mention Fujifilm, neither in the list of companies, who will be present, nor in the list of those, who dropped out. Whatever that means.

FujiRumors at Photokina 2020?

While going to photokina was always a huge fun, I very likely won’t go there in 2020.

In fact, a visit to photokina always comes during my teaching work job, and it has always been cumbersome to change the lesson schedule to be replaced for several days (and once back from photokina, I had to work A LOT to give back the extra hours my colleagues had to work to replace me).

Photokina is no longer Photokina, and I think it’s not worth anymore all the hassle it brings to me and my colleagues at work.

But you know what?

At least I can say, I was still there, when Photokina was still the epicenter of the photography world.

Camera Industry and Future Trends: “Fujifilm Does it Right and Will Grow Strong”

Stephan Wiesner, a very popular German youtuber and photographer, has published his 2019 camera roundup and future trend predictions, which include also Fujifilm.

Just as it happened for the Italian guy, who left Fuji for Sony, and then switched back to Fuji, also in this case you are lucky, because also German (as Italian) is one of the three languages I manage better than English.

Fujifilm X Summit September 20: Big Announcements, Cool Insights and New Lens/Firmware Roadmaps?

Fujifilm just announced the Fujifilm X Summit for September 20 at 1PM GMT. This means it will take place at:

  • 9AM New York Time
  • 3PM Berlin Time

There will be a LIVE STREAMING here on FujiRumors.

Fujifilm writes about the event:

Following the first round in Dubai, we are pleased to announce that the second X Summit will be held on September 20th 1PM GMT!

This time, the X Summit will be held in Shibuya, Tokyo – the mecca of street photography in Tokyo. What will happen this time?

Make sure to tune in on September 20th.

Now, Fujifilm can’t tell you this, but of course they mean to stay tuned on FujiRumors for non stop real time coverage, just as we did last time back in February with the Dubai X Summit. ;)

What Will Happen?

Let’s take a look what Fujifilm did at the last Fujifilm X summit in Dubai:

  • they asked the Fujifilm community to vote on future lenses
  • they asked the Fujifilm community to vote on future firmware
  • they showed early Fujifilm GFX concepts, including a modular GFX
  • Fujifilm engineers talked about the X and GFX lenses and camera development
  • Fujifilm managers showed us mock-ups of future lenses such as the the XF33mmf/1.0
  • the showed a Fujifilm GFX100 prototype
  • they explained the Fujifilm color science approach
  • there was a Q&A with the community

Now, you can see that Fujifilm actually did NOT announce any new gear at the last X summit, so chances are, that also this time we won’t get a full and final announcement of any new camera or lens.

In fact, our sources confirm that the final announcement with full specs and pre-orders for the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will happen on the second half of October.

However…

I know many of you are hoping to see a Fujifilm X-H2 or maybe a Fujifilm X-T3s with IBIS.

I have not heard about it, and if something like this comes, it was Fujifilm’s best kept secret ever. But yes, there is this third mysterious camera registered, and if it comes out 2019, then I honestly have no idea what it could be.

You guys, though, seem to be much more confident: you see high chances for a Fujifilm X-H2 or X100V (but X100V will surely come in 2020 only)

What can be expect more realistically?

This Guy left Fujifilm for Sony A7III and then Switched Back to Fujifilm X – Read Why Here

Sony Launches A6600 and some Sweet APS-C Lenses – Now Stop Sleeping Fujifilm and Give us MORE LENSES!

Sony finally did it and released very nice APS-C cameras, the Sony A6600 and the Sony A6100 – full introduction here.

Personally I am very happy about the new Sony cameras, because in the high-end APS-C world, Fujifilm is basically without competition, and Sony is a terrific competitor, that I guess we all very much welcome.

But more than the two new camera bodies, I am particularly happy to see they also announced some interested lenses:

The first one is definitely a Pro lens, and goes right after Fujifilm’s XF16-55mm f/2.8.

The second one is a lens, Fujifilm officially considers to make, and in our huge future lens poll, it makes it into the top 10 of your lens wishes.

With Sony now treating with some fine camera bodies and lenses their APS-C system again, I can only hope that Fujifilm will step on the gas again, too.

In fact, this year, we got only 2 lenses for the X system (and one in the current roadmap for 2020):

Now this 100% confirms what we told you back in 2017, that Fujifilm will release 2/3 lenses for each system (X and GFX) a year.

But now look at the APS-C cameras, Fujifilm released (or will soon release) in 2019:

Now that’s just my opinion, but releasing more cameras than lenses in one year is just wrong.

Fujifilm should focus again on giving us more lenses! And as our recent mega-lens-survey showed, Fuji X shooters definitely have lots of unfulfilled needs there.

So it’s nice to see Sony coming out with some fine APS-C lenses. This might push Fuji to speed up their lens development.

Well, that finally happened!

Fujifilm updated it recently, and the updated guide includes all products released from October 2018 to now, including the brand new Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4.

Three Fujifilm Cameras Registered, But When Will they Come? Time Span Between Fujifilm X/GFX Registrations and Announcement

Fujifilm has recently registered three cameras:

The inevitable question that pops up in the comments when this happens, is how long the time span is between registration of a camera and its announcement.

To answer that, I looked back to the past time span between registrations and announcements, and here is what we see:

  • 1 month = 4 cameras (X-T2, X-E3, X-T100, X-T30)
  • 2 months = 3 cameras (X-T20, X100F, XF10)
  • 3 months = 3 cameras (X-T3, GFX50R, GFX100)
  • 6 months = 1 camera (X-H1)

It’s clear that we usually get a camera between 1 and 3 months after registration (with exception of X-H1, which needed 6 months).

Clearly this would indicate of 3 cameras coming within November, although the X-H1 shows that a longer wait is not impossible, hence an announcement within February 2020 (6 months).

What could these cameras be?

3½ Reasons Why Fujifilm is Waiting so Long to Release the Fujifilm X100V

When I recently posted the huge Fujifilm camera release timeline, I made one single error, that thankfully you guys corrected in the comments.

I calculated, that the Fujifilm X100 series got a refresh every 2 years, which is absolutely correct. But then, based on that refresh cycle, I said that the X100V should come two years after the X100F (which was announced in January 2017).

But this would mean the Fujifilm X100V should have hit the market in January 2019, which evidently it has not. Our sources say it will come at some point in 2020.

Now, not to justify my error, but, well, I run FujiRumors 365 days a year non stop, and I wrote that particular article in a bar, drinking beer, while waiting for the rain to stop and finally go out shooting again with my X-E3, as you can see here. Well, at this point I’ll just say is that it rained a lot that day ;)

I apologize if I confused you guys, so I felt I need to address this in a dedicated article.

But also, this is a good opportunity to quickly discuss, why Fujifilm is waiting so long, to finally give us a successor to the Fujifilm X100F.
