Could this be Silhouettes of the New FUJIFILM Roadmap Lenses? :: New Size Comparison XF23mmF2 Vs. XF35mmF2

I’ve switched the lens names (35 and 23) to make the 23 look smaller than the 35 – original image here

The New Roadmap Lenses

Just a few days ago, I reported about the first images of the new lenses Fuji added to their roadmap: the 23mmF2 (scheduled for 2016), the 50mmF2 and the 80mmF2.8 1:1 Macro (both scheduled for 2017). But the images didn’t convince us.

The XF23mmF2 looked bigger than the 35mmF2. Then, corrected for distortion by FR-reader exkeks, the XF23mmF2 was about the same size of the XF35mmF2. That’s pretty compact, but some of us hoped for something even smaller (pancake lens like the X100-lens).

Right after the post, a source contacted me and confirmed that the 23mmF2 will have the same design of the XF35mmF2, but the distorted picture is making the XF23mmF2 look bigger than it really is. I’ll grab the occasion to ask this source, if the size 23F2 Vs 35F2 shown below in this article is more realistic.

The New Size Comparison

thanks to the FR-reader for the link :)

The Swedish store cyberphoto already put the new Fuji Roadmap Lenses on their site. No specs, no price, no details… but just what could be the silhouettes of Fujifilm’s upcoming lenses.

I can’t tell you if these silhouettes are based on internal Fujifilm material that cyberphoto has photoshopped to show only outlines or if these are just randomly made by cyberphoto. But what I know, is that the Swedish store is not new to leaks (do you remember for example the smiling Fuji rep leak?).

Before we analize the images, keep in mind that only the 23mmF2 is close to be announced (rumor here). So the lens design should be final at this stage and maybe the first prototypes already out for testing. The XF50mmF2 and XF80mmF2.8 will come only in 2017. Fuji might have an approximate design now, but nothing 100% final.

In any case, don’t take these silhouettes as the real thing. So finally, after quite a long time, I can say again: take it with a grain of salt ;) .

Now let’s analyze the silhouettes.

XF23mmF2 R WR
Not X100-lens small, but very compact anyway. And probably also sharp wide open (whereas the X100-lens is rather soft when shooting macro at F2).

XF80mmF2.8 R OIS 1:1 Macro
The shape is the same of the 80mm Fuji showed in Japan to the Press. One Stop slower than the 90mm, but with OIS, 1:1 Macro and compatible with both, the 1.4x and 2.0x Fujinon Teleconverter

XF50mmF2 R WR
In this case, cyberphoto took nothing else then the shape of the XF35mmF2. So definitely not the real thing. And probably, at this stage, it’s too early to have any accurate idea of the XF50mm size and shape

Preface:

About a year ago while hiking in Zion Utah, I came across a big horn sheep herd, I took some pictures with the Fuji 90mm at far too close a distance (around 4 meters), since then I’ve been hooked and keen on trying out wildlife photography as a pastime. This is what has led me into the point I am at now, with a Fuji 100-400mm a 2x teleconverter and a cropped sensor, equating to ≈ 1200mm

Equipment: Fuji X-Pro2, Fuji 100-400mm, Fuji 2x TC

Look and feel:

The combination is very easy to use, it’s still light, although too long for most bags, and wildlife begs for your camera and lens to be ready and set up, with hood on and camera setup it makes this a large, yet light package.

Durability:

Hiked through the mountains of Yellowstone Nation Park for 10 days, got rained on very hard (way to much for comfort) and the combination kept up with nary a problem in sight. It seems to be apt for the job.

Sharpness:

Well this is tricky, the Fuji 100-400 is sharp, but at the 400mm end it’s not as sharp, the setup although fantastic for shooting hand-held, isn’t bright enough to keep ISO down and shutter speeds up, not to mention swinging 1200mm is tricky at best and your movement is amplified greatly and you can overwork the Optical Stabilization quickly with quick jerks and movements, but I got really good results hand-held @1200mm’s without wearing myself out because of weight and size, I would call that a good give and take.

Image Stabilization:

It’s hands down amazing, it’s not magic, you can’t swing this combination and hope for the best, but I spoke with many photographers all of which were posting against something or had tripods, at the distances we were sharing my photos were more clear, and usually much closer.

Reach:

1200mm can be shot handheld with ease, and its much easier to fill up the frame at safer distances.

Auto Focus:

It works, and I know this sounds rather silly, but you have to spend a lot of money on the DSLR side to get 1200mm to autofocus (from what I know). It’s actually pretty fast and accurate in good light. It’s amazing to think that it is contrast based to be honest.

Conclusion:

I couldn’t be happier with this combination, I’m truly hoping that fuji comes out with a 300mm f2.8, I would buy that setup in a heart beat. As is though, Fuji is really moving quickly with filling in all the gaps with lenses, they are making wonderful optics and they truly work well and are a pleasure to use.

Over at the Samyang Facebook Page, the company launched a new teaser:

“5 NEW Samyang Lenses will be released on every Monday for the next five weeks.”

Samyang already offers about 15 X-mount lenses. See them all at the Complete Overivew over all existing and upcoming X-mount lenses.

I personally own the [shoplink 37811 ebay]Samyang 12mmF2[/shoplink]… great value for the little money I’ve spent! It’s a lens that many X-shooters love. In fact, our Samyang 12mm thread is one of the most visited and commented ones (62,144 views + 201 comments)!

I’m looking forward to what Samyang has to offer next :-)

Silver Fujifilm X-T2

A few days ago, I’ve linked to an Australian store, that listed a silver Fujifilm X-T2 for sale along with the black version. Well, the silver X-T2 has now been removed from the page.

So what did happen with the silver Fujifilm X-T2?

When we clicked on the images the Australian store shared, they really didn’t look like a quickly self-made silver X-T2 mock-up. It seemed to be more some kind of internal material Fujifilm distributed to stores.

I believe that, at a certain stage, Fujifilm really planed to release the black and silver X-T2 together. This is why some of the X-T2 material send confidentially to stores could have included the silver X-T2. But (once again and as so often) Fujifilm changed plans and decided to release the silver X-T2 at a later moment.

If my speculation is correct, then it could be that the Australian Store was confused, missed the “strategy-change” at Fujifilm and therefore shared the silver X-T2 at their site.

End of the story – or fairy tale

X-T2 :: Black Vs. Silver – VOTE NOW

According to insiders, the Silver graphite X-T1 didn’t sell as well as Fuji hoped. But what if the silver X-T2 and the black X-T2 where priced the same? Which one would you buy? Here is the Poll
