GFX Technologies #6 – The New Color Chrome Effect: Both a Goal, and a Beginning :: GFX Vs. Sony A7rII & More

Color Chrome Effect

The 6th episode of the GFX technologies series is now online. This time it’s about the new color chrome effect:

  • The development of Color Chrome Effect is derived from a reversal film: fortia. The film was introduced to the market in 2004 with the catchphrase “Higher contrast and more vivid color than Velvia
  • no matter what you do in Velvia mode, it will never turn into fortia
  • When expressing colors such as red, orange, yellow, or yellow green in high contrast, high brightness tends to exist. If contrast and brightness both reach their peaks, there is no room for tonality. As a result, the image becomes very flat. But by analyzing the light and information received on the sensor surface, one can detect slight gradation. Color Chrome Effect uses this to create tonality while maintaining high contrast. As a result, an image is achieved without losing its depth.
  • Side effect: processing power is required. Even the X-Processor Pro needs about 1.0 sec. to process the Color Chrome Effect. If you are single shot user, then this is not a problem. But you cannot shoot continuously or set it to AF-C mode.

Jared Polin Fujifilm X-T2 Real World Review

Jared Polin (more of a DSLR guy) used the Fujifilm X-T2 for the first time, and he took the Fujifilm X-T2 out for a real shoot. In his 48 minutes long video (which for a large part shows Jared at work, with no commentary on the X-T2) he says amongst the others:

  • he’s not used to the old school controls – aperture, shutter and ISO on dials – so he must get used to it
  • he loves the EVF. It makes shooting so much easier
  • he misses the touch screen
  • the X-T2 shoots super fast and the focus is pretty lightning quick, also in continous. DSLR still better in continous, though.
  • he likes that when he’s shooting at 8 or 11 fps, quick bursts, it’s great, because there is no mirror black out, because there is no mirror in the camera, so he never loses sight of what he’s shooting

Starting from 31:14 Frono checks the files on the computer and adds more considerations to the camera

  • better to use with grip for better handling
  • he doesn’t like the menu system and you need to get used to it
  • batteries are pretty good, and don’t drain as fast as in Sony cameras
  • you have to get used a bit to the focus modes
  • great lens options

Fujifilm GFX 50s and Eric Bouvet in Mosul, Iraq :: Photojournalism in Warzones with Fujifilm GFX

Fujifilm GFX 50s for Photojournalism

When Fujifilm developed the Fujifilm GFX 50s, they had the following target in mind: professional photographers, who shoot fashion, commercials, portraits (in studio or outdoor), landscape and architecture.

But I remember a Fujifilm Manager, who said that, once they started the “GFX challanges series” and the camera was given to selected photographers for beta testing, the feedback was so good, that they started to believe the Fujifilm GFX 50s might also be quite good for other photographic genres, such as street photography… and apparently also photojournalism.

Eric Bouvet

Long time FR-readers will remember, how I mentioned the first time Eric Bouvet, when he covered the war in the Ukraine with his X-T1 and X-Pro1. Well, he’s right now in Mosul, Iraq, and this time he documents everything with his Fujifilm GFX 50s.

First of all, I wish Eric all the best while documenting the war in Mosul and to have soon a safe flight back home.

And once back, we really look forward to his images, which will for sure enrich an already stunning portfolio that you can check out at his website here. We are first of all curious to see the stories he will bring home and share with us… and also to see how the Fujifilm GFX 50s performed in the arguably most challenging of all environments.

Eric is sharing the first images and videos from Mosul taken with his GFX on his instagram account. Make sure to check it out here. WARNING: It’s a war, and Eric is right in there. So you might see images and videos that could hurt your sensibility.

And feel free to join & enjoy the Fujifilm GFX facebook group. We are more than 10,200 right now. There is also a Fujifilm GFX facebook page, with news and rumors tailored to the GFX. You won’t miss a single GFX tidbit by following it.

Sebastian Lee shared here:  The 32-64 wasn’t quite wide enough to get the composition I wanted so had to shoot a pano. Didn’t go crazy, came out to right at 12,096×7585 though my 5K iMac I think was starting to melt processing the pano haha. Eight 1 second exposures with lots of overlap.
