Fujifilm GFX 50s and Eric Bouvet in Mosul, Iraq :: Photojournalism in Warzones with Fujifilm GFX

Fujifilm GFX 50s for Photojournalism

When Fujifilm developed the Fujifilm GFX 50s, they had the following target in mind: professional photographers, who shoot fashion, commercials, portraits (in studio or outdoor), landscape and architecture.

But I remember a Fujifilm Manager, who said that, once they started the “GFX challanges series” and the camera was given to selected photographers for beta testing, the feedback was so good, that they started to believe the Fujifilm GFX 50s might also be quite good for other photographic genres, such as street photography… and apparently also photojournalism.

Eric Bouvet

Long time FR-readers will remember, how I mentioned the first time Eric Bouvet, when he covered the war in the Ukraine with his X-T1 and X-Pro1. Well, he’s right now in Mosul, Iraq, and this time he documents everything with his Fujifilm GFX 50s.

First of all, I wish Eric all the best while documenting the war in Mosul and to have soon a safe flight back home.

And once back, we really look forward to his images, which will for sure enrich an already stunning portfolio that you can check out at his website here. We are first of all curious to see the stories he will bring home and share with us… and also to see how the Fujifilm GFX 50s performed in the arguably most challenging of all environments.

Eric is sharing the first images and videos from Mosul taken with his GFX on his instagram account. Make sure to check it out here. WARNING: It’s a war, and Eric is right in there. So you might see images and videos that could hurt your sensibility.

And feel free to join & enjoy the Fujifilm GFX facebook group. We are more than 10,200 right now. There is also a Fujifilm GFX facebook page, with news and rumors tailored to the GFX. You won’t miss a single GFX tidbit by following it.

Fujifilm GFX Images

Sebastian Lee shared here:  The 32-64 wasn’t quite wide enough to get the composition I wanted so had to shoot a pano. Didn’t go crazy, came out to right at 12,096×7585 though my 5K iMac I think was starting to melt processing the pano haha. Eight 1 second exposures with lots of overlap. Fujifilm X-T2 Image Printed on Huge Billboard for Nike :: Fujinon XF 50mmF2 WR Vs. XF 56mmF1.2

Anyone who Questions X-T2 APS-C images…

… can’t do big prints?

In these days, where we are all stunned by the resolution of the Fujifilm GFX, Sean Marc Lee shows that the 24MP APS-C can already print big. In fact, he shoot an image for Nike with his X-T2 and it was printed on a huge billboard. He used the X-T2 w/ 35mm f2.2 1/125.

So yes, also APS-C Fuji’s can get the job done :) You can see the image at Marc’s instagram here. Also from the same campaign, check out in Chinese hypebeast.

Fujinon XF 50mm F2 WR Vs. XF 56mm F1.2

Jordan just shared his XF50mmF2 Vs. XF56mmF1.2 comparison at admiringlight here:

both are very good lenses. The 56mm f/1.2 is sharper at similar apertures over most of the frame, though the 50mm f/2 is a touch sharper at the edges at f/2. Bokeh is a fairly close race, and as both are quite sharp, and both have nice renderings, I’d consider the other factors when choosing between the two.”

XF 50mmF2 Lenstip Review: “Excellent Lens, Applause to Fuji” :: Palle Schultz GFX eXperience: “It will Help You to Do the Best You Can Be”

Fujifilm GFX

– The Fujifilm GFX is like your old SLR + example shots at Palle Schultz Youtube: “When you see the files that come out of it, there is really nothing to complain about. There is only one thing you can complaint about while using the GFX, and that is the photographer, because the GFX will show if the photographer is not good, but the GFX will help you to do the best that you can be. […] the files are so big, that you don’t want to fill up your hard disk too fast. So I slowed down, and I asked my models to slow down, and take fewer pictures, but better. With the GFX you concentrate more, and take that one picture that you want“. Check out also the AWESOME images at the end of the video (music in the background played by Palle Schultz himself)

– Potraits on FUJI GFX 50S, 120mm F4 Macro and 63mm F2.8 by Baljit Singh Deo at baldeo. Another set of stunning images.

Both, Palle Schultz and Baljit Singh Deo are members of our 10,200+ members strong Fujifilm GFX facebook group, share their work with the GFX 50s there and are always open to discuss it with the members. I really love to see how this group is growing together and how much enthusiasm there is for the GFX… and for photography in general.

Fujinon XF 50mm F2 WR

Lenstip just shared their Fujinon XF50mmF2 WR review, and it’s an extremely positive one.

Pros:

  • handy but solid and weather-sealed casing,
  • brilliant image quality in the frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • negligible spherical aberration,
  • low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • sensible coma correction,
  • negligible astigmatism,
  • sensible performance against bright light,
  • silent, sensibly quick and accurate autofocus on the X-T2 body.

Cons:

  • some problems with the longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • visible vignetting on RAW files.

Conclusion: “An excellent lens – those words would be enough. Still, to make our summary more eloquent we have to add that for a very decent price you get a lens sensationally sharp in the frame centre, small, lightweight, weather-sealed and produced in Japan. It didn’t avoid some flaws but they aren’t very important and don’t change our assessment in any way. A round of applause, Fuji!

Fujifilm GFX

Fuji GFX with Elinchrom HS High Speed Sync at Robert Q youtube

DPReview Reviewer Dan Bracaglia is right now testing the Fujifilm GFX. His full review will be out soon. But he gave us some tidbits in his talk with TWiT Netcast Network on youtube. He says:

  • Pretty good EVF resolution, but when you focus, you can get some shimmering and moire.
  • because of the not so fast lenses, the advantage of having a MF sensor is lost (FF has faster glass)
  • You can shoot higher ISO with less grain
  • it’s a specialty camera for high-resolution photography
  • Worth waiting a generation and wait for more lenses to come out first
  • Fuji has some of the nicest color science of all camera manufacturers out there

Fujifilm GFX: Landscape, Studio… and Look at This Shadow Recovery

Fujifilm GFX 50S – Unboxing, studio test and my first thoughts at ThePhotonauts youtube… shows also the shadow recovery capability of the camera (see image below and video at 3:12)

1) Fuji GFX-50S | Hands-on Review at wexphotographic youtube

2) Landscape photography in Madeira with the Fujifilm GFX in German at 0816fotograf (translation): ” The camera perfectly supports my very conscious and focused landscape photography and my other photographic aims. Thus the Fujifilm GFX is the ideal tool for the future. It is a professional tool that delivers top results when used correctly.”

3) Fujifilm GFX experience in Norway at williamchua (shooting northern lights with the GFX and testing weather sealing and battery life in extreme conditions): “The details and dynamic range is fantastic. Coupled that with the Fuji colors and the black and white film simulation, its definitely a winner.”

4) GFX 50s First Impressions at fotograficoweb: “The GFX is a pure medium format camera – quintessentially. Feels smaller, like a DSLR, follows the X series brilliant ergonomics and disappears from your hand after a couple of hours letting you focus on photography. And this is probably one of the better attributes of the GFX. It is not an extremely desirable object like a X100F or a X-Pro2 from the design point of view but it is highly functional, specially because it produces MF files […] Is it better than a full-frame DSLR? It is DIFFERENT and not comparable. ”

5) Discover what the GFX can really do, by enjoying tons of samples and discussions at out GFX facebook group here. To get GFX tailored news, follow our GFX facebook page.
