Fujifilm GFX50R Discontinued, Zero Rumors About GFX50RII and Dreams About GFX100R

It’s over.

According to reports at digitalcameraworld, the Fujifilm GFX50R is now discontinued.

As a huge Fujifilm X-E line lover, the Fujifilm GFX50R would have been my most natural step into Fujifilm medium format.

However, as I don’t switch from X-Trans APS-C to Full Frame because the difference is negligible (and with lots of advantages on the APS-C side, too), I also thought that sure, going from 26 to 50 MP is OK, but at this point I prefer to go all-in and grab a 100 megapixel medium format Fujifilm GFX100S.

If there was a Fujifilm GFX100R, I’d have grabbed that one. But it looks like all I can do is to hope that one day in the future Fujifilm will give us either a Fujifilm GFX100R or an X-T styled GFX100 (as shown in these official Fujifilm prototypes).

But don’t get me wrong.

A camera with a PSAM dial, a dedicated custom settings dial and top LCD is stupidly easy and fast to operate. The total opposite of the original GFX100, which is the only Fujifilm camera I’ve ever hold in my hands where I thought “WTF, need to grab that owners manual“.

But I can’t really fall in love with cameras that are stupidly easy to use, I prefer those who are FUN to operate. Like my X-E or X-T cameras.

So, my wish for the GFX future are a GFX100R and GFX100T. But so far, I have absolutely zero rumors about it. And for the records, I have also zero rumors about a Fujifilm GFX50RII.

In any case, if you are also attracted by the rangefinder styled medium format Fujifilm cameras, then better grab yours now, as who knows for how long we will find the Fujifilm GFX50R in stock now that it is discontinued.

Good bye, Fujifilm GFX50R. I was one of the very first people to touch you, back then, at the photokina 2018, where I even illegally smuggled into the fair one day ahead of its official launch to meet you. May your heritage continue to live in the GFX lineup.

Fujifilm GFX Evolution: Leaving Perfection for…

ZP productions tested the GFX100S and GF80mmF1.7. He loves both, and owns both.

But there is one note he makes.

He says that when Fujifilm launched the GFX system a few years ago, it had sheer perfect lenses. But he noticed that with the latest lens releases, Fujifilm traded in a bit of that perfection to release less perfect, smaller and more affordable lenses.

In this context, he compares the GF110mmF2 to the GF80mmF1.7, the first one being expressions of Fuji’s perfection, the second one, while still being excellent and he actually totally loves to shoot with it, just not being just as perfect as the GF110mmF2.

I’ll make a summary down below of his 17 minutes long video below and would love to hear what you guys think about it.

Stop Buying Fujinon GF Lenses Like Crazy, Or We Won’t Get GF Lens Deals Anymore ;)

Take all launch-sales of all GFX cameras in the past, combine them, and then compare them with the sales (and pre-orders) of the Fujifilm GFX100S.

The result: the Fujifilm GFX100S sold better than ALL of them combined!

No surprise that therefore the Fujifilm GFX100S is already the most owned GFX camera by the FujiRumors community.

This should be a good news for Fujifilm. But it also puts Fujifilm in front of some serious challenges.

  • ship all the pre-ordered GFX100S cameras as fast as possible
  • with tons of new photographers joining the GFX system overnight thanks to the GFX100S, also sale of G mount lenses is incredibly strong

After an email of FR-reader Darin, I took a loot at the current GF lens stock status at BHphoto, AmazonUS and Adorama.

I noticed that, at the time of this post, 7 out of 12 lenses are not available at BHphoto, and also Adorama and Amazon lack of G mount lenses stock.

So down below is an overview on what you can still find where.

I have the feeling that, with the lenses selling so strong, we won’t get deals on them for a while. But I hope to be proven wrong.

Fujifilm GF 50mm F3.5: an Easy Lens to Love

On March 29, the huge deal on the Fujinon GF 50mm f/3.5 will end.

Now DPR shared a first impressions article about this lens, and here are some of their remarks:

  • it’s sharp. Very, very sharp. Fujifilm has claimed that all the GF lenses were designed for more than 100MP of resolution
  • I was rather impressed to see essentially perfect sharpness all the way out to the extreme corners and I didn’t notice any practical difference in quality throughout the aperture range
  • I couldn’t find any chromatic aberrations in any images
  • On my GFX 50R, focusing from close to far with the 50mm seems faster than all my other GF prime lenses except the 23mm
  • It locks on almost instantly with hardly any ‘wobble’ and a barely audible ‘zip’ sound
  • Fujifilm made the autofocus of this 50mm medium format lens feel a lot more like one of the better X-mount APS-C lenses than any other medium format lens I’ve used. It’s certainly faster than manual focus on Hasselblad V system lenses, faster than Pentax 645 AF lenses, and faster than Mamiya / Phase One AF lenses I’ve used in the past
  • Close focus could be closer. […] It would be easy to suggest simply cropping into the much higher resolution GFX image
  • I’m actually very impressed by this lens’s flare resistance
  • Overall, the Fujifilm GF 50mm F3.5 lens is easy to love
  • It transforms the GFX 50R into a camera that is actually very easy to carry around and shoot with casually, which is definitely NOT something you can say of most medium format gear
  • I’ve shot with some of the best, most expensive gear in the world… and this 50mm is among the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used
