Top Voted SIGMA vs TAMRON: The Ultimate FUJIFILM X Mount Third Party Wish List Lens Poll

Since Fujifilm officially announced that they opened the Fujifilm X mount for third party lens manufacturers (with Tokina the official partner), many of us started expressing wishes for Tamron and Sigma lenses coming for Fujifilm X mount.

I was curious to see which lenses you’d like, and launched two mega surveys, that included all Sigma and Tamron lenses available on the market.

Fujifilm USA New Big X/GFX Deals: Here are My Top 3 Deal Picks and Vote Your Favorites!

But I wanted to highlight 3 deals, that are, in my opinion, the best ones this time around.

As an owner of a lovely X-E3, I can safely say that this is a fantastic camera… IF… you are looking for a really compact interchangeable lens camera system. Sleek and clean design, great performance and frankly just good looking. Don’t buy it if you are left eye dominant (unless you have a Voldemort nose, as Trenton would say), but if you are right eye dominant (like me), then I tell you: this is the camera you want to take with you on travels. Strongest competitor: Fujifilm X-T20.

Maybe some of you might argue that this should be considered the best deal of the Fujifilm Spring Sales. Maybe you are right, but there is a very scientific reason why it has to rank second: FujiRumors is an X-E fanboy ;).

With that said, with the Fujifilm GFX50R you get a relatively compact and high resolution medium format body with a 70% larger sensor than full frame for the same price of a full frame Sony A7rIV. Add to this a little prime lens that is capable of resolving 100+ megapixel images (the GF50mmF3.5) for just $499 and I’d understand if you’d tell me that this is, indeed, the best deal of this round.

You know when all the vloggers moaned that there are no “full frame equivalent fast” APS-C lenses“? Well, the Fujinon XF200mmF2 is one of those lenses that made them all happy. And moreover, it performs incredibly well. Matt Granger said it is worth all of its $6,000. But also many others where blown away.

Sure, a lens like this is condemned to be and remain a niche lens. But now, at this price, it’s great value for the money. If you belong to that niche, now it’s a great time to get it.

VOTE NOW the SIGMA Lens You Want for Fujifilm X

In a recent interview, Top Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida said that Fujifilm is opening X mount to third parties, and that Tokina will be the first company to offer autofocus lenses for the Fujifilm X system.

To be fair, Fujifilm had an exclusive agreement with Zeiss back in the days, when the Fuji X system was at the beginning (and almost nobody bought it). Fujifilm needed to extend their lens offering and they did it with the help of Zeiss, who released Zeiss Touit X mount trinity (with the first 1:1 macro lens for the X system among them).

But that cooperation failed, and Fujifilm went on making lenses for the X system all alone, never sharing protocols with anybody else again.

Fast forward March 2019, when pressed by questions, Top Manager Toshi Iida confirmed that Fujifilm does not need to share their protocols, as they offer lots of lenses already.

This statement raised strong reaction in the FujiRumors community, with hundreds of comments disagreeing with Fuji’s decision.

Shortly after that, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki literally said in this interview: “Fujifilm customers would be our ideal customer, but Fujifilm does not disclose their protocols”.

And so, another wave of critics reached Fujifilm.

It seems Fujifilm listened, as just recently Fujifilm completely changed position, saying they will open X mount to third parties.

We like to believe, that all our critics helped Fujifilm to change their mind about this subject ;).

Now, it remains to see, what “opening X mount” means for Fujiiflm. In fact, I agree with Trenton, when he wrote in the comments to our previous post:

Only time could tell what that “open to third parties” means in reality. It could come loaded with prohibitive licensing costs. It could come with a non-compete clause.

For todays’ article, we will just assume, that Fujifilm will open for everybody, who wants to join, for a reasonable price. And that Sigma, who said that Fuji’s protectionism was the reason they can’t make X mount lenses, will now be on board and start releasing lenses for Fujifilm X.

Now the question is: which lenses should Sigma make first?

Of course Sigma has currently a massive lens selection.

I decided to check out the current Sigma mirrorless lenses offering that are listed at BHphoto here as well as all current Sigma lenses for DSLR cameras listed at BH.

Of course some lenses are for APS-C and others for full frame. I will list them all down below.

Now, the FujiRumors community is always extremely happy to help out managers to make decisions. So, in case Sigma is right now thinking at which lenses they should offer first for the Fujifilm X system, we launch a survey, so that you guys can tell them what you want, and Sigma can make their decision.

And if you think I am crazy… remember those times, when Fujifilm had no roadmap, and we launched a mega-survey with lens suggestions, and Fujifilm took 1:1 our top recommendations and put those into the roadmap?

Fujifilm Wins Four TIPA Awards with GFX100, X-Pro3, X100V and Instax Mini Link

Fantastic achievement for Fujifilm!

The TIPA Award is an extremely tough competition, where products are brutally tested by the best experts on the planet. Companies are eager to win the TIPA award, and sometimes they want to pay to get it, but the incorruptible and visionary team of TIPA experts, guided by the one and only goal to deliver the most unbiased and professional feedback to customers, does not bend to the will of multimillion dollar companies. They award only the most prestigious products ever!

Ok, now let’s get serious.

Lots of companies payed again lots of money to win a totally meaningless award. TIPA created as many categories as needed to make everybody happy (who paid). Hence you will find frankly ridiculous category differentiations, such as “best professional APS-C camera” (Fujifilm X-Pro3), “best expert APS-C camera” (Sony A6600) and “best advanced APS-C camera” (Nikon Z50). The whole point of these award commissions is to make money by selling award licenses, meaning the right for companies to use the award logo to promote their products.

Fujifilm Photography in Times of COVID-19 Quarantine, the FujiRumors Lockdown Diary and the Revival of the XF 55-200

I read somewhere, that about 4 billion people are forced to stay at home now to slow down and hopefully stop the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

In my country, the stunning Dolomites in Italy, we are locked in since over 1 month now. Of course I strictly follow the rules and never leave my apartment, except to buy food 1 or 2 times a week, and to quickly bring out my old dog in the fields just under my home.

Teaching Online

I continue to teach. Just online! With live streaming lessons, videos I upload on youtube [does this qualify me as a vlogger now??? ;) ], material I send to students via email and more. I try to do my best.

But the more I do it, the more I miss it to enter a classroom, write on a blackboard, smell the chalk, but most importantly, interact with my students.

But hey, these days there are people, who live far bigger challenges than me. So no complaint here. Just a wish that everything goes back to normal soon.

Lockdown Photography

The first weeks all went into figuring out how to do this online teaching. Trying different platforms for online live lessons, adapt my material to make it online teaching fit, figure out how to reach the various students best (some have only a smartphone, no computer, no printer, etc), and more practical issues to sort out.

But now that I have some sort of workflow, I can start thinking at my lockdown photography.

In my small rented apartment, I am running out of subjects rather quickly.

What I did now, is I started to take out my Fujinon XF55-200 lens, a lens I hardly use anymore since I own the Fujinon XF18-135mm (which never stops to surprise me, as you can see here).

The goal?

Get a decent shot of the little birds flying around my balcony, and the XF55-200 is the best lens in my arsenal for that. So it gets its revival now!

So far I have failed, though, not for the limits of the gear, but because of my lack of skills. But I have time to practice, improve, and I will upload an image on my instagram if I get a decent shot.

Another thing I like to do, is to check out all our facebook groups, and see how other fellow Fujifilm X and GFX shooters deal with these lockdown days and what they shoot.
