DPRTV Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 Review

Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5

The Fujinon GF 50mm f/3.5 is not only the newest, smallest, lightest and most affordable lens in the GF lens line-up, but it’s also the currently best selling G mount lens.

But what do you give up in exchange for the small size?

According to Chris from DPReview, not much. Here is what he says in his Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 review:

  • smallest and lightest lens for the Fujifilm GFX system
  • manual focus ring is buttery smooth
  • linear motor AF. Tested on Fujifilm GFX100 the AF speed is very impressive. From near to far focus is quick
  • lens design is relatively complicated compared to other “pancake” lenses, and it’s amazing that Fujifilm was able to keep it that small
  • minimal breathing
  • very sharp
  • can easily handle the resolution of the GFX100
  • the GF50mm f/3.5 is a full frame equivalent of 40mm f/2.8
  • very good center sharpness even wide open
  • surprising the corners, which hold up very well too
  • optically a very sharp lens
  • very minor and very well controlled color fringing
  • you are going to like the bokeh, maybe a little bit of a darker edge, but very smooth interiors and very nice round shape even stopped down
  • the lens is a bit too wide for portraits. the GF63mm is a better choice, or the best overall is the GF110mm f/2
  • macro capability is not amazing, but you will use it on high resolution cameras, so you can crop the hell out of it
  • Chris still prefers the 63mm focal length, but if you want to save money, size and weight, the GF50mm is great

Looks like Fujifilm crafted yet another winner. Well done, Fuji!

FujiRumors has exposed the naked truth about (some) award business here. I invite you to read this article to be illuminated ;).

A total of 940 companies and 1,420 products won the “Good Design Award” in 2019.

The probably most interesting part of Fujifilm winning 32 design awards this year, is that the list shows only 27 products, and 5 more have yet to be announced.

Will one of them be the mysterious registered X or GFX camera here?

Here is the list of photography related winning products.

DRPeview Fujinon GF 50mm f/3.5 Samples, Rico’s First Look and Fujifilm Promo Videos

The Fujinon GF50mm f/3.5 will start shipping at the end of September. It’s a top seller at BHphoto, and my guess is that it will become extremely popular amongst GFX shooters.

There isn’t much content out there. But luckily there is good one, thanks to Rico Pfirstinger.

Lots of samples, as well as a comprehensive write-up at our German sister forum (the English Fuji forum here).

Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 Review: It Performs Better than More Expensive Professional Lenses

Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4

I don’t know you, but I hate it when Fujiiflm announced gear, and then lets us wait 3 months to finally ship it.

This is the case with their “July” announcements. X-T2, XF200, XF8-16 and now XF16-80 and GF50 were all announced in July, but shipped only in much later, between September and November.

In case of the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4, we still have to wait until the end of September, to finally see it shipping.

As a consequence, we are meager on independent third party reviews…. but a fellow FujiRumors has found one, and shared it with us!

The review with lots of high res samples comes from the Slovakian page ephoto, and here are their conclusions of the lens (google translated):

Fujinon XF16-80 / 4 R OIS WR filled a hole in Fujifilm’s portfolio. This is a lens that everyone who starts Fujifilm should buy and is not sorry to pay for a more versatile lens.

The aperture F4 makes it more suitable for outdoor use. In slightly poor lighting conditions, the photographer is assisted by effective optical stabilization. The scope of the lens allows you to comfortably shoot landscape, nature, architecture.

At the same time, he handles the details and does not fear portraits. When taking pictures in poor weather conditions, you will appreciate the seal. It is the ideal lens for trips, vacations, trips anywhere. The weight is only 440 g.

If you want to shoot with a single lens, this is him. I hope we will meet him, as it will be cost-effective with the X-T30, X-T3 and X-H1.

Personally, I find no mistake on the lens that would make sense to bother. In terms of parameters and price, it provides above-average user value and optically exceeds one of the more expensive professional lenses. Such a good and generally balanced zoom is not easy to see. There is no need to hesitate for a moment.

Make sure to check out the full google translated review at ephoto.

It includes a series of brickwall-test images shot wide open from 16mm to 80mm. Once you access the gallery, click on “Zobrazit” to open the high resolution version.

Venus Optics officially launched the Laowa 17mm f/4 back at Photokina 2018.

After several delays, the lens is now ready for the final release, which, according to Venus Optics, will happen within the next few days.

Jonas Rask has already teased in his GF50mm first look that he is testing a wide angle lens. So expect to see a first hands on to come from Jonas.

The Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D will be the widest lens for Fujifilm GFX and will take 86mm screw filters, so no need to carry around bigger filter holders systems.
