16-55 OIS: Typo or not?

Ok, let’s start with the missing OIS on the 16-55. It’s known that the majority of X-shooters would like to have a stabilized lens. But a couple of weeks ago, at photokina, Fuji said that the 16-55 won’t feature OIS in order to keep it smaller and improve IQ (although, can’t we simply turn the OIS switch to “off”, if we worry about the IQ degradation?). So, no OIS.

However, in a recent Fuji event in Malaysia, Fuji showed a mock-up of the 16-55 and, just look at the image above, Fuji wrote 16-55 f/2.8 OIS. Now, I think it is a typo, and it wouldn’t even be the first time it happens (remember the 18-135 f/3.5-4.8 shown at CP+ in February, while in fact it is 5.6 at the long end?). So, don’t have too much hope for a stabilized lens… I think it’s just another typo. The lens mock-up itself has no OIS switch and marking. But of course, hope dies last.

And thanks a lot to those FR-readers who provided images to Fujirumros!

XF 50-140 samples and more first impressions on the upcoming X-gear

nextimelah.gr (The Malaysian Technographer) was at the Fuji event in Malaysia, and wrote a blog post with his impressions about the upcoming X-gear. He owns an X-M1 and had also a brief time with the XF 50-140, shared some samples on his blog, and his fist impressions are:

Although a brief time with it, I have already some opinions of the lens. While it looks huge on my X-M1, it’s surprisingly lighter than it looks OIS works really well, and although I did not test it beyond 1/42 secs at 140mm the LCD was very stable when composing Focusing was fast and accurate even on my X-M1. Definitely faster than my XC 50-230mm lens.

He also mounted the XF 16-55 f/2.8 WR and XF 140-400 OIS WR mock-ups on his little Fujifilm X-M1. Here are a few images, but many more can be seen and read at nextimelah.gr.

CONSIDER that these are just mock-ups. The final size can change. Also the weight of the final lenses will very likely be different as the one of the mock-ups.

Quick focus, long battery life, sharp images even at ISO1600, detailed images with rich saturated colours typical of Fujifilm… overall, there is a lot to like on the Fujifilm X30, says ephotozine here. At the end of their review they posted a very long list of PROS, and just 2 CONS: the price and that RAW is not available in some modes.

They end up highly recommending this camera giving it 4.5 stars out of 5.

And if the price is the only thing that is holding you back from purchasing this camera, check out the offer on the [shoplink 28918 ebay]black X30 (8 available here)[/shoplink] and on the [shoplink 28919 ebay]silver X30 (8 available here)[/shoplink]. “The X100T electornic rangefinder? It’s fun, but you’re probably not gonna use it.” Hands-on at TheCameraStoreTV

X100T: USA: BHphoto  / AmazonUS / Adorama / EUROPE: WexUK / WexDE / PCHstore / AUSTRALIA: CameraPro

One of the amazing features of the new X100T is the electronic rangefinder OVF. Since now we have read great things about it. For example Kai (digitalrev), who called it a “bloody brilliant feature“.

Now it’s time for Chris (TheCameraStoreTV) to test the X100T, and he is not so enthusiastic about this new feature:

The electronic rangefinder OVF is a nice little feature. That being said, a lot of people who looked at it found it very distracting […]. It’s fun, it’s a novel, but honestly you’ll probably gonna turn it off, because that full EVF is just so good. I don’t know even use the OVF, the EVF’s are getting so good now, that they basically make optical viewfinders redundant.”

But the end of the hands-on test, Jordan, the Video-Guy, says: “I have to say, my favorite thing in the Fuji line are the cameras with a HVF, because they are fun to shoot. You know, are they practical? Lot of the time, no. But it does really remind me of the old rangefinder experience.” Chris: “Fair enough, it’s really about the charm of it.”

Chris also misses a tilt screen, would have liked a new sensor, but there are also many things he appreciates, like the new ergonomics, the controls and how customizable the camera now is (7 function buttons and customizable Quick Menu):

What they did is to keep all the things that worked well, change all the things that didn’t… it’s fantastic, it’s a big plus on this camera. Of course the great thing about Fuji is, if you are an X100S user or have an older X-camera, they’ll probably update and fix those things on those cameras as well through firmware updates… it’s fantastic that way, a big bonus as well for using this company

The video includes also an untechnical AF-speed comparison between the X100S and X100T. “Not a big difference, but the X100T focusses a little bit faster.”

(Video) Craftsmanship of Fujinon lenses… and the main reason to own a Fuji! (POLL: Vote your favorite lens)

Share

Lenses are extremely delicate and have to be handled carefully, just like they are alive.”

This is what one of the craftsman says in this short video that gives a you an insight into the manufacturing procedure of the amazing Fujinon glass. From the polishing to the mold pressing, from the assembling to the final check (where each lens is carefully checked by skilled technicians) and the packaging… and at the end of the chain, there is somewhere a happy X-shooter enjoying the great quality of the glass.

So, if you own some Fujinon lenses, then you won’t be surprised by the temporary result of the poll (see at the bottom of this post): the majority of X-shooters voted the Fujinon XF lenses as their main reason to own a Fujifilm X-series camera.

And this time I’d like to know which are your favorite lenses available on the market in the Fujinon line-up.
