guest post by Philip Sutton: philipsuttonphotography website + Instagram @finartfoto

Before I get to the point of this posting, I will give a little bit of background to add some perspective to my thoughts. I started my photographic journey way back in the film days. I shot for many years for a Stock Library in Sydney Australia. You know the deal – the generic girl with glossy white teeth eating a red shiney apple, or the squeaky clean couple with their 2.2 kids having a picnic under the perfect umbrella-shaped tree. All fairly boring stuff, bit it kept my artistic flair alive and helped to pay the bills. I still worked as a teacher (my main source of income), but I was able to make a healthy supplement to my earnings by selling ‘stock’. Back in those days the Nikon F3, then the F4 were the weapons of choice. Due to family reasons, I had a break from photography for about 10 years, and of course when I returned everything had gone digital.

For the last 6 years now I have travelled Asia extensively (usually for 3 months of the year), shooting Fine Art images for my website. My recent weapons of choice were the Nikon D700 and D3X. After thinking long and hard how I could lighten my burden from dragging these huge DSLR’s around in the tropical heat of Asia, I eventually threw caution to the wind and in 2012/13 I sold all of my Nikons and lenses and bought a Fuji X100, X-Pro1 and some lenses. On a good day, the X100 was just OK, but the X-Pro1 experiment was an unmitigated disaster. That trip to Asia in 2012 was highlighted with mutterings and expletives all aimed at the Version 1 Firmware of my X-Pro1 and its lack of focusing ability. I returned back home with not many useable photos and immediately (at great expense), sold all of the Fuji gear and bought another D3X with a selection of lenses.

Two (2) Reasons Why the AF-Tracking of the X-T2 (and X-Pro2 Ver.2.00) is Much Better Than on the X-T1!

Share

From TheCameraStore to DigitalRev… most X-T2 reviewers so far seems to be impressed by the new Fuji AF-speed, especially in continous shooting mode. So the question is: how was it possible to achieve such a significant improvement? There are two main reasons, as Fujifilm explains here:

Reason 1 for better AF-Tracking

The new technology has been developed to allow increased number of AF search between the frames. There used to be only one AF search between the frames, but this is now increased up to 10. This will allow better tracking on the moving subject between the frames. […] longer live-view means that AF search can be conducted for longer period of time.”

Reason 2 for better AF-Tracking

The AF search can now be processed in parallel. The breakdown of AF search is “Exposure”, “Read”, and then “Process”. The new algorithm allows so that each step can be conducted simultaneously. It means that while the first AF search is being “processed”, the second AF search starts to “read”, and the third AF search starts the “exposure”. By doing so, multiple AF search is now possible in the short interval.

NOTE: The X-Pro2 will get the new AF-algorithm via Firmware Update in October 2016. However, the AF-C Custom Settings, introduced with the X-T2, will not be part of the Firmware udpate. If you don’t know what the X-T2 AF-C Custom Settings are, check out this Review.

Fujifilm X-A2 Officially Discontinued… so what About the Fuji X-A3?

X-A2 Officially Discontinued

Fujifilm X-A2 Discontinued

Fujifilm officially discontinued the Fujifilm X-A2 (Specs & Price).

You can still find it [shoplink 48151 ebay]available on eBay[/shoplink] and several stores, but Fuji won’t produce any new X-A2 cameras.

Considering that the Fuji X-A2 is selling very well in Asia.  IIRC a Fuji Manager statement, it’s the best selling interchangeable lens camera in some countries like Thailand. That’s why I strongly believe that there will be a Fujifilm X-A3 at some point.

A different story for the X20 and XQ2, which are also officially discontinued, but I doubt we will ever see a successor.

The Fujifilm X-A line is the most affordable MILC X-series camera line of Fujifilm and features a regular Bayer sensor, unlike most of the other X-series cameras, that feature an X-Trans sensor.
