Phase Detection Evolution: Fujifilm patents hybrid AF Pixel !

 photo asd_zpsaffcda03.png

Fujifilm continues its research in order to develop new sensor technology. After the organic sensor and the one with different pixel size (enlarged green pixels) egami (click here) spotted a new patent: the hybrid AF pixel.

If I deciphered correctly the google translated text, then here is what this sensor is about:

If you implement phase detection pixels into the sensor (like on the X-Trans II sensor or on the [shoplink 22210]Sony A6000 sensor[/shoplink]) you’ll benefit of faster AF. But, on the other hand, as these pixels can’t be used to gather light, you’ll have some “image quality degradation.”

But the hybrid Pixel is supposed to be able to do both: improve the AF speed and at the same time gather light. As egami explained: “Transmittance would not be 100% that there is an optical element, but I will be able to minimize the image quality degradation.” Egami explains that Fujifilm’s “hybrid pixel approach” is different from the Dual Pixel AF technology of Canon.

What do you think? Is it a wise move of Fujifilm to put R&D into new sensor technology, or should they simply continue to purchase the APS-C sensors of Sony (although Fuji has to wait half a year to get its hands on the newest Sony sensors)?

X30: small camera and big EVF

It’s confirmed by the trusted Japanese source: the X30 will feature an EVF and it will have the same resolution & coverage of the EVF’s we find the X-T1 + X-E2 and the same magnification of the X-E2’s viewfinder.

The rumored X30 specs list so far is: (TS= trusted source / NeS =New Source / AS = Anonymous Source / SRP = source who was right in the past, but not yet trusted / ORS = other rumor sites

– 2/3 sensor (TS + NeS)
– EVF only (TS + NeS)
– EVF specs: 2,36mp, x0.62 magnification and 100% coverage (TS)
– Announcement: at photokina (ORS) – FR-sources just said “this summer” (AS)

Do you prefer it with an OVF? Then check out the stores in your country. If the X20 isn’t discontinued (like at BHphoto), you could find some great deals on it. Check it out at [shopcountry 12884].

Good bye OVF: the X30 will feature an EVF (new source)

 photo EVFONLY_zps7ee85cbd.jpg

On Monday I told you about the X30 with 2/3” sensor and asked you to contact me in case you have more information about it. Well, a new source kindly contacted me via email, confirmed the 2/3” sensor and also said that the X30 will feature an EVF.

Over at the FR-facebook community, Eric and Grant expressed their wish to replace the OVF with and EVF.

A good news for EVF lovers. But what do you think? Do you prefer an X30 with an OVF (85% coverage) or an EVF? Here is the poll:

But for now, take it with a grain of salt. I’m at work and trying to confirm it with trusted sources. And if you have some information about any Fuji X gear, you know the ways to contact me.

First samples taken with the X100T uploaded by David Hobby, but quickly removed

 photo X10T_zpsfe4715a6.png

FR-reader Luke stumbled on this interesting dpreview thread. The screenshot can found at reddit.com.

Apparently, David Hobby uploaded a set of sample images from the X100T to his Flickr account by mistake. The images have since been removed, as he broke his NDA (non-disclosure agreement) by publishing them.

The name is nothing new for FR-readers. I told you over a month ago that X100T could be the name of the X100S successor. The focal lenght remains 23 (APS-C, according to mirrorlessrumors).

(TS= trusted source / NeS =New Source / AS = Anonymous Source / SRP = source who was right in the past, but not yet trusted)

  • X100T (TS + NeS + leaked by X-photographer David Hobby)
  • 24MP X-Trans sensor (NeS)
  • APS-C (ORS)
  • faster AF than X100S (NeS)
  • tilt screen (NeS)
  • new fixed lens (NeS)
  • 23mm (leaked by X-photographer David Hobby)
  • new EVF, better than X100S, but not as much as X-T1 (NeS)
  • wider phase detection area (NeS)
