FujiRumors is on Instagram… and Explains You Why You Should Buy that New Lens :)

Hi all,

Quite some time ago, I made an Instagram account, that I never used. And yet, slowly, it gained 100 followers.

To celebrate the event of having 100 followers with zero posts, I’ve have shared a flowchart, that explains you why you should buy a new lens. A chart that has been shared to me by Olli on Twitter, but if somebody knows the original source, please let me know, because whoever did it is a genius, and deserves a quote. Help me to find that guy! :)

Anyway, having 100 followers with zero posts, means that you guys are out there on Instagram, and that maybe somebody would like to join me there, so I thought it might be time to get a bit more active.

I’m not yet very familiar with Instagram, but I think it’s about sharing images and also tidbits from my private life.

So let me try my first steps into the instagram world. I should have soon the opportunity to share some stuff there, since I plan 2 mini-holidays:

  • weekend in Prague with girlfriend on 16/17 December (it’s her birthday)
  • 4 day city trip from 2 to 5 January with girlfriend. Still to decide if Rome or Venice/Verona

But right now most of the time I will be very busy with work, and in my spare time I won’t have much time to do anything else than blogging, given the Fujifilm X-H1 announcement.

However, once this stress period is over and I will have more spare time, I will make sure to bring you a bit more with me in my daily life.

So, if you are on Instagram and would not like to miss to see me drinking excellent beer in Prague soon, then join me on Instagram here.

Speaking of Prague… (shameless use of FR for personal use, sorry ;) )

Usually when I travel I always have some “photo-goals“. In Prague my “photo-goal” is to take an image at sunrise from Karl’s Bridge. So, if you see a guy with a Fujifilm X taking pictures, that’s me :) . Hopefully the weather will be good. Any other spot I should not miss to photograph?

And to FR-readers from Prague, any tip where I should book a romantic dinner with my girlfriend? Last time I was in Prague I was 23, and at that age I didn’t care much about romantic dinners in Prague honestly… so any tip is highly appreciated.

yours, truely

Fringer Canon EF – Fujifilm X Smart Adapter Prototype AF-C Video Demo

Fringer just uploaded a video demo of the Canon EF to Fuji X smart adapter.

You can see how the Sigma 30/1.4 performs on the Fujiflm X-T2 in this youtube video.

Here is a list of smart adapters available or to come soon.

Fringer writes at fringerdev.strikingly.com

After almost a month’s research and development, Fringer EF-FX smart adapter prototype’s PDAF performance has been further improved.

Unlike Sony E mount cameras, Fujifilm X mount is quite complex in PDAF support. More than two years ago, when A7r2 introduced phase detection AF (PDAF) for adapted lenses for the first time, I spent a night to find out the key mechanism and in very short time let my Contax N-E adapter become world’s first third party smart adapter supporting PDAF on mirrorless. Now I finally find the way to make X cameras do the same when adapting EF lenses. All the PDAF points on CMOS, not only the central one, but also the others around it, are all working properly, whatever the lens is wide or tele, zoom or prime and whatever the aperture is set wide open or stopping down.

Although the firmware of smart adapter for GFX50s can be easily modified to support X mount as what some other smart adapter manufacturer probably is doing , it doesn’t support PDAF. Compared with CDAF (contrast detection AF), PDAF is a performance leap. Thus, I developed the new version specifically for X mount. I made a short video to demo the AF-C zone focusing performance when PDAF is enabled. The lens is Sigma 30/1.4 art (for EF mount) and the camera is X-T2. Remember that S30/1.4A has a bad reputation for its slow AF speed.

In addition to that, I also did some real field tests. Using a EFs 55-250/4.0-5.6 IS STM lens and X-T2 camera, I tried continuous shooting on a moving vehicle towards the camera. I set the AF mode to zone and AF-C, continuous shooting mode to CH, and shutter mode to electronic only. The lens was at 250mm/F5.6.

I shot 34 photos in less than 4 seconds with a rough speed of 10 frames per second.

See all images at fringerdev.strikingly.com

As you can see, it’s not perfect. several of them were out of focus. But most, i.e. about 80%, of them were OK. I guess that’s a not bad performance for zone AF/AF-C with speed of 10 frames per second.

The Fringer EF-FX smart adapter (production version) is expected to be released on early 2018.

Fujifilm Firmware Updates – The Day After! New Hidden Features? :: Bugs Reports? :: X-T2 Autofocus Twices as Fast?

Fujifilm X Raw Studio First Look at Lightroom Blog youtube

The Day After

I usually recommend 3 things, when it comes to firmware updates:

  1. Always update, even if you think you don’t need the update, because often firmware updates hide improvements or bug fixes that are not reported officially.
  2. BUT… if you need the camera for a paid job, do NOT update immediatly. In fact, very rarely, new FW udpates can introduce bugs. Therefore, wait a few days, check back on FujiRumors.com, and if you read no bug reports, go ahead and update
  3. Every time Fujifilm updates a camera, I get about a dozen of emails of people having issues with the update. I always send them this Firmware update tips article, and it always fixes their problems :). So make sure to read it.

So, today, the day after Fujifilm’s firmware updates, it’s time to collect all feedback about possible bugs and new hidden features that Fujifilm might have introduced.

For the start, make sure to read the new X-T2, X-T20, GFX and X-RAW STUDIO features guides, all shared in this FujiRumors article.

Done that?

Good, then I’ll make the start, sharing some feedback we got here on FujiRumors and in our facebook page.

BUG, Really?

FUJFIILM GFX: Reported by Thai P. at out GFX facebook here: “In the new feature EVF + LCD display we could not use the touchscreen to zoom in. Sigh” But it’s not clear if that’s a real issue, or maybe something to change in the “image preview” settings. The community is testing. Some say it works flawlessly. So maybe just a false alarm. GFX shooters, feel free to let us know in the comments.

FUJIFILM X-T20: Reported by Grumpyrocker here: “The X-T20 now has a “Boost” symbol on the screen if high performance mode is enabled. But there’s no way of turning this off in the screen setup menu.”

Hidden Feature, Really?

Magnus shares here: “There’s one that seems to be undocumented. If you enable flashing highlights in your display settings, you get a bonus when using a Manual Focus lens with focus peaking: the focus peaking now flashes! I tried this on a sunrise photo walkabout this morning and it works brilliantly. Made it so much easier to nail my focus quickly.” Video demonstration here on facebook.

Salihin Salim, though, says here: “I believe the focus peaking only flashes when the focused part is overexposed. On darker parts or when I purposely underexpose the photo, the focus peaking doesn’t flash anymore.”

X-T2 AF Twice as Fast, Really?

  • Focus tracking of smaller objects seems to work much better if you look at this ZedProMedia youtube video, where he compares the old Vs. new X-T2 FW
  • First reports on FujiRumors by Joseph here: “Wow, I honestly wasn’t expecting that much of a difference in AF-C performance. AF no longer pulsates when AF-C is engaged, that was my biggest issue on the previous firmware. Edit: It still does, just not nearly as much.”

Tip

Justintime says here: “So Fuji say firmware adds:”If you press the function button allocated to the histogram, RGB histogram and highlight warning (High brightness portion will blink.) are displayed.” Noticed in Set up: screen set up: disp custom settings there is now a selection for “live view highlight alert. get blinkies without pressing function button (or assigning rgb histagram to a function button) and without rgb histagram filling half viewfinder. this feature is not in 2.10 and not documented as far as I can see

What else?

Questions? Something you noticed? Tips? Feel free to share with the community your feedback :)
