Fujifilm Fiscal Year FY2017/3 3rd Quarter Financial Results Report… and the Unstoppable Rise of Instax

Fujifilm just published here the results for the fiscal year 2017 (3rd quarter – until December 31, 2016)

“In  the  Imaging  Solutions  segment,  consolidated  revenue  amounted  to  ¥256.4  billion  (down  5.9%  from  the  same  period  of  the  previous  fiscal  year),  due  to  the  negative  impact  of  yen  appreciation  (¥31.0  billion)  and  other factors.  Consolidated  operating  income  amounted  to  ¥28.1  billion  (up  5.9%  from  the  same  period  of  the  previous  fiscal  year),  due  to  the  recovery  of  profitability  in  each business,  though  the  negative  impacts  on  sales  from  yen appreciation were seen.

[…] The sales of instant photo systems such as the instax series and instax films, were strong especially in the United States and Europe.

In the electronic imaging field, the sales increased due to the sales of such flagship models of the mirrorless digital camera as FUJIFILM X-Pro2 and FUJIFILM X-T2 , and interchangeable lenses increased steadily.

So once again, it’s Fujifilm high-end cameras (X-T2 more than X-Pro2), but especially the Fuji Top Selling Instax Universe, to improve Fujifilm’s profitability in the imaging divison.

Fujifilm X100F, X-T20, X-T2 Graphite & XF50mm Final Release Date – PRESS RELEASE

Fujifilm just published a press release at their Japanese home page, with the final release date for the latest X-gear launched this month.

So there is a slight delay on the originally planed release date. Although it’s strange that they mention the graphite X-T2, which I hear has already started shipping. Maybe this release date is for the second batch.

The press release does not say anything about the Fujifilm GFX release date, which makes hope that there won’t be any delay.

If you are curious about the GFX, well, then I can’t recommend you enough to join us at the Fujifilm GFX facebook group, where 5,700+ GFX fans are having great discussions about Fuji’s new system and GFX beta testers continue to share their images, impressions and interact with the whole community.

I’ll pick out a few more GFX tidbits shared at the group… and let’s start with:

GFX Dynamic Range (JPEG)

I’ve already shared yesterday Keith’s first impressions & image samples at clubsnap. Keith is also interacting and answering the questions of the GFX facebook group in his GFX post here. Amongst the others, he shows how much details you can recover from an underexposed Super-Fine JPEG with the GFX.

GFX Portrait Shot with 120mm

GFX with 120mm at the German site fineartprinter (translation) – Go to the finartprinter to see the crop

First Pictures and Impressions of the GFX with 120mm at the German site fineartprinter (translation) – Via GFX Facebook Group here. A short summary of his findings:

  • Sharpness is “convincing“
  • the lack of mirror (and hence less camera shakes) allows to achieve sharper handheld pictures at slower shutter speeds. He easly shot perfectly sharp images with the 63mm at 1/80 of a second
  • impressive 69,9 x 52,43 cm printings at a 300 dpi resolution and 87,38 x 65,5 cm at 240 dpi
  • One Image + Crop shared at fineartprinter (translation)

I would be careful with judging the sharpening for now, since it’s uploaded for the web. However, it can give an idea of how sharp the images are with the GFX, and I especially love the soft out of focus transition.

Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 No Longer on Fujifilm’s Internal Roadmap … GAME OVER for Fuji’s Super Fast Lens?

Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0

Back in 2015, I told you here that Fujifilm had plans to develop the Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 lens.

But something changed in 2016, when I told you here that the terrific success of the XF35mmF2 WR convinced Fujifilm to focus on compact and weather sealed lenses. Also, the GFX + GF lenses came along, and Fuji had to put lots of R&D into the development of a complete new system.

As a consequence, the development of the XF33mmF1.0 had been pushed back (as well as the one of the XF8-16 and 200mm).

So, in these days, I’ve tried to understand what happened with these 3 long rumored lenses. I was able to confirm, that the XF 8-16 is on Fujifilm internal roadmap and is scheduled to be the lens to come after the XF80mmF2.8 1:1 Macro.

But here comes the bad news:

I had a talk with a long-term trusted sources about the Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0. The source told me, that, at this stage, the XF33mmF1.0 is no longer on Fujifilm’s internal roadmap. Hence, the source has big doubts it will ever come.

If you have something to say to Fujifilm about it, this is the moment to say it…. because remember… they do read you ;)

So what do you think… should we start to make some pressure just as we did with the X-E3?

TOP OF THE SHOTS… at the X-Shooter Facebook Zone!

Hero Workshops‎: Perpetual Embrace. Back Beach, New Plymouth, New Zealand. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. One of the last sunsets of 2016 was hugging the horizon when I made the best of the inevitable. Burying my tripod in the sand against the ebb and flow of the incoming tide I soon found myself pretty drenched. At least the water up north is warmer than in Christchurch :). Shot using a 6-stop Nisi ND filter to show motion in the surf, and a 3-stop soft grad to bring down the top-right corner. My waterproof Sirui W2204 was a huge help as well. Water stays out of the legs and it looks like new after a quick hose down. Fujifilm X-T2 + XF10-24 ISO200, 11mm, f6.4, 1/4s
