There is still hope: X100 firmware update could come!

 photo c_zps49737a1c.png

130,000! That’s the number of photographers who purchased the Fujifilm X100. As you know, the other X-series cameras are constantly improved via firmware update, getting faster autofocus, focus peaking and much more (read the “amazing evolution of the X-PRO1″ article here), but X100 owners were not that lucky lately. Well, it seems that there is still hope…

At dpreview user Mistur said: “There will be an update for the X100 that will add approximately 50% of the 72 new features found in the X100s. While there has been no official announcement yet, I heard about it at a recent Fuji event for the X-M1.”

Now, take this rumor cum grano salis ;). But, well, it’s not the only forum talking about a possible firmware update for the X100. Take a look at the fujix-forum here… the number of hints is growing!

No FR-source could confirm these rumors until now, but I suppose that an update for the good old X100 is nothing like improbable. But will there be really so many improvements as suggested by Mistur on dpreview?

As a reminder, here is the list of the actually 70 improvements of the X100S over the X100 (read also this post here). Choose the top improvements you’d like to see on your X100.

thanks for giving me these hints, Lukas
cheers

It would be great to have a firmware update and a proof that Fujifilm cares about customers, not forgetting that it is still possible to buy the X100 as new in some shops.
Not expecting a rate of improvements as the one referred, some important ones could however be offered for the satisfaction of present users and would certainly work as a factor of confidence in the X sys line and even work as a marketing argument for the manufacturer.

  • lukas

I would love to see those improvements:

    21. Expanded AF shooting range from 40cm – infinity (X100) to 21cm – infinity (X100S). (not on Macro mode) – No idea if this could be done by firmware
    22. Quick (Q) Button for speed and instant access to shooting menus.
    23. Multi Tab Menu easy and fast navigation.
    53. Change the location of AF area select button.

    • lukas

      AND of course

the same AF speed improvements we got with the x-pro1 and the x-e1 ;-)

  • john

Outputs 14bit RAW files for all x-series.

    • http://fb.me/akzphoto Andy

      I’ll second *that* emotion… :)

  • Mark

Lot’s of wishful thinking and hoping, but highly unlikely. My guess is that the team that worked on the X100 firmware is now working on the X100S firmware.

  • deng

    My wishlist:

    6. 1080p 60fps/30fps full HD movie
    7. Improved start-up time. From 2.0sec to 0.5sec
    10. Improved Shooting Interval from 0.9 seconds down to 0.5 seconds.
    19. Focus Peak Highlight function helps you to check the focal plane.
    20. In Movie Shooting, it is possible to choose 3 kinds of focusing modes MF/ AF-C and AF-S.
    21. Expanded AF shooting range from 40cm – infinity (X100) to 21cm – infinity (X100S). (not on Macro mode)
    22. Quick (Q) Button for speed and instant access to shooting menus.
    23. Multi Tab Menu easy and fast navigation.
    24. Two new Film simulation functions added: Pro Neg.Std and Pro Neg. Hi.
    27. Multi Exposure function. While viewing your first shot on the EVF or LCD as an overlay, you can shoot a second shot.
    40. Max ISO from 3200 to 6400 (ISO AUTO Mode)
    41. WB shift available in any mode.
    42. Variation of aspect ratio 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1.
    46. Change the default LCD information setting -> standard.
    47. Reset function added for every custom mode.
    51. When you hold down the Q-button in the Q-menu it’s a short-cut function to edit and save.
    52. Ability to set ISO-AUTO with Base and Limit ISO and Min. shutter speed in ISO menu.
    53. Change the location of AF area select button.
    59. After releasing the shutter button you can now immediately use some keys.
    60. When holding shutter button, the LCD doesn’t freeze.
    61. In Post-viewing after OVF shooting, the eye sensor works.
    63. Changed Flash settings including External Flash in right key.
    64. The ND filter is now available in panorama mode.
    67. Added ‘ MF distance indicator ‘ in Display custom setting.

And the AF improvements from X-Pro1/X-E1. I especially hope for that one and ProNEG Hi.

  • Sulis

Not being too greedy, the main ones I’d like from the list are:

    19. Focus Peaking
    21. 21cm-Infinity normal AF range
    22. Convert RAW button to Q Menu
    24. Pro Neg Std and Hi
    50. Supports Eye-fi memory cards.
    53. Move AF point using 5-way controller
    54. Change the sub-function of AF area select button.
    55. Change the sub-function of AE button.
    56. Add the sub-function of Fn button.

    And any general AF improvements.

    That’ll do me.

Hi, do you have any rumors for new cameras, that are not low end?

Olympus has the Pen 5, its got everything the M1 is missing and then some, in a smaller package. Sony is rumored to bring out a FF system camera, and Olympus perhaps has a hand in that which could see them with something new around October time.

Fuji has the M1, a cutdown E1/XP1, a rumored A1 budget camera … and a possible Firmware update for the 3 year old x100. Umm, that’s not very impressive :-(

Is there anything at all on the horizon outside of that and a few lenses?

  • Fredrik

I’m so glad I didn’t sell my X100! Hoping for better AF, split-image focusing and 1:1 image mode.

    • deng

Fredrik, split image is not possible without phase detection sensors – it’s a hardware limit.

  • K1

Considering the same words were used in both posts on DPReview and the Fuji-X forum I think it’s fair to assume that they were either both posts by the same person or one was a copy of the other which again means one person.
It must be a slow news day to publish such tenuous information and try to turn it into a front page story.
From a marketing viewpoint Fuji would be completely bonkers to issue a firmware update to the X100 all that will do is stop anybody upgrading any Fuji X series body from now one. Their sales will grind to a lower level than they already are.

  • Tom

Of course if this info is reliable, it sounds like X100 may get all the updates that it’s hardware will allow. Such as features that don’t require more processing power that it possesses. Split image, certainly not; 1080P, don’t count on it. Focus peaking and Q menu, sure why not. Looking forward to it!

  • XEDGE

I’m not sure what use focus peaking would be without an improvement to bring MF up to X100s standards (ie. useable)

  • john

Since Fuji has the knowledge, i wish fuji can develop their own software like previously done with their other cameras. Why X-series which they considered as higher end does not come with FUji software whereas their other series of cameras do? It would be nice if we could use the Fuji software for raw conversion into film simulation like astia and provia, instead of using the in camera raw conversion or silkypix. I have installed silkypix 5 times and end up uninstalling it 5 times for my panasonic and fuji cameras. It just doesn’t work. Fuji, pls do it and develop your own software to accompany the camera.

  • Ian

    16. if there’s any chance manual focus can be improved through software. MF in the X100 is currently a real pain, there’s no way IMO it can be used for live action, I only use it to pre-focus before hip shooting sessions in the street.

    21. to be able to shoot closer without activating macro mode

    53. because AF point selection currently basically results in you sticking your thumb in your nostril half of the time. Reprogramming Fn or Raw button to AF point selection would be nice.

I could also use faster autofocus although we know 5. can’t be achieved in the X100 due to contrast detection only. And faster shutter responsiveness as well. There’s currently a bit of delay between focus and shutter operation, during which the instant you’re trying to capture can go away.

  • gaminos

    19. Focus Peak Highlight function helps you to check the focal plane.
    22. Quick (Q) Button for speed and instant access to shooting menus.
    24. Two new Film simulation functions added: Pro Neg.Std and Pro Neg. Hi.
    25. F-simulation bracketing function – one shot can produce 3 different Film Simulation effects which can be pre-set.
    42. Variation of aspect ratio 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1.
    64. The ND filter is now available in panorama mode.

  • grappo

if i get 4:3 aspect ratio added, i wouldnt really give a damn about any other feature.

  • Bussta

    Please Fuji add the following;

    - Pro Neg standard & Pro Neg Hi
    - improved AF
    - Auto ISO with minimum shutter speed option
    - Q Button option
    - Improved shot to shot time
    - faster turn on
    - imporoved high iso algorithm

All these can be done, go on Fuji, reward those early adopters to the X series camera!

  • mzakiey

    any news?

    • http://deleted David

      No, it was a hoax.
