This Guy Claims You can Upgrade Your Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 to f/1.6 via Firmware plus Viltrox Official Statement to FujiRumors

 

I actually wanted to ignore this news (for reasons I will explain below), but readers keep sending me the video, so it is time to address it.

According to a video shared by Stefan, the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 is actually firmware upgradable to f/1.6!

To be clear, this is not an officially released firmware. It is circulating on the web and has been picked up by Stefan Malloch on one of his youtube videos.

I did contact Viltrox back in May about this, and the screenshot below will show you their answer.

Dont’ Do That

After Viltroxs’ answer, I did decide maybe it is better to just ignore it, as I do not recommend anyone to download an unofficial firmware, which could potentially create problems to your lens. Or, when a new firmware with the same number is officially released, you might not be able to update your lens, as the lens will think you have it already installed!

But given that apparently the news spreads anyway, at this point it’s better to address it on FR, too.

Is this Possible?

Now, it’s not unusual, that lenses are actually potentially faster, than the manufacturer says. For example, the Fujinon XF-16-55mm f/2.8 aperture blades are closing down a bit, even when the lens is used wide-open at f/2.8, hence for the most part of its range the XF16-55 is potentially even faster than f/2.8.

This could be the case also with the Viltrox 85mmm f/1.8.

But even if it would be possible to unlock the extra 1/3 stop of light via firmware, I’d not do it, unless it’s a final firmware officially released by Viltrox.

New Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 Released, Will No Longer Damage Your Fujifilm X-Pro3

Back in May, Viltrox issued a statement that their X Mount AF lenses can damage the Fujifilm X-Pro3 and FujiRumors later on reported about a free return service Viltrox offered.

Now they are redesigning those lenses, so that they won’t damage your X-Pro3 anymore (see damage in this post).

Just a few days, Viltrox has also released a MK II version of the 85mm f/1.8. Now the updated Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 AF has been released too.

Tokina ATX-M (and not ATX-I) Coming for Fujifilm… and are they Just Rebranded Viltrox Lenses?

Recently Tokina announced the launch of three Fujifilm X mount lenses:

  • Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4

There was some confusion also today, because Tokina just launched the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 ATX-I, but the site, reporting about it, says that the ATX-I is for Canon and Nikon only, and the ATX-M (the three above) are for Fujifilm.

So, no Tokina 11-20 for Fujifilm for now.

Now, let’s talk about the ATX-M lenses.

As many of you noticed, they looked like rebranded Viltrox lenses. The optical constructions seems identical, but the body seems build slightly different.

Ben Sullivan investigated this topic, comparing the Tokina 85mm f1.8 & Viltrox STM 85mm f1.8. Here is what says:

  • Upon comparing the optical design, Ben saw that the two lenses share a nearly identical composition.
  • The MTF results looks pretty similar too. Tokina says that they’ve used a “proprietary coating” on the 85mm ATX-M, which could account for the moderate resolution difference, along with normal deviation between each individual lens tested.
  • pretty noticeable physical similarities as well
  • Feature wise, there are also quite a few similarities between the two lenses. In fact, the only non-identical spec I found was Tokina’s 0.125x magnification versus the 0.12x magnification listed for the Viltrox. […] It may be that they are indeed identical and that one company simply rounded down from x0.125 and the other rounded up.
  • both Tokina and the Viltrox 85mm lenses currently display as the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 in CaptureOne Pro
  • Ben reached out to Tokina Japan for an official response
  • Tokina answered “Tokina lenses does not have a relationship with Viltrox
  • Tokina and Viltrox apparently have no business relationship whatsoever.
  • Ben’s best guess would be that Tokina and Viltrox are both working with a well established 3rd party Chinese lens manufacturer that creates prototypes and allows other companies to customize and sell their lenses under their own brand names.
  • This makes oodles of sense if you think about how fantastically well Viltrox did with releasing their first ever lenses for Sony and Fujifilm last year.

Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 ATX-I CF NOT COMING for Fujifilm X

Tokina will launch the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 ATX-I CF, but according to the German website fotomagazin, this atx-i lens is for Canon and Nikon, and Fujifilm will get the already teased atx-m lenses you can see below. Not a single mention, that also the Tokina 11-20 will come to Fujifilm.

  • Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4

The atx-i series is one of the new series from Tokina such as Opera, atx-m (soon also with Fujifilm X bayonet ) and Firin . The “i” stands for “interactive”. So far, however these include models that it already existed in this light intensities / focal length combination as something kürzerbrennweitige atx-i 2.8 / 11-16 mm CF . The atx-i 2.8 / 11-20 mm CF seems to be similar: Most of the technical data are identical to the predecessor from 2015, be it the lenses in their optical structure and their nature or near limit, filter diameter and aperture blades.

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Owners Can Return Their Viltrox Lenses and No Problems with Fujifilm X-T4, X-T3 and Other Cameras

Yesterday on FujiRumors we reported how all Viltrox autofocus lenses can damage Fujifilm X-Pro3 cameras. To see an image of the damage, check out this article.

Well, now Viltrox is letting customers know, that Fujifilm X-Pro3 users can return their Viltrox lens. They also say that there is no problem with other cameras, such as the Fujifilm X-T4 and Fujifilm X-T3.

WARNING: Viltrox Lenses Can Damage Your Fujifilm X-Pro3 (Official Viltrox Statement)

Viltrox has just issued an official statement, where they say that the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4, Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 and Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 can damage your Fujifilm X-Pro3.

The reason, so I have been told, is that the location of the lens release button on the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is too close to the bayonet.

Here is what Viltrox writes.

1) Kind Reminder for Fujifilm X-Pro3 Users:

For the sake of your camera, it would be better not use Viltrox 23mm, 33mm or 85mm X mount lens onto Fujifilm X-PRO3 model in case it will damage your camera. Due to the structural conflict, they will scratch a little bit against each other. We apologize for any inconvenience caused!
