X-T1 FW will make Video Button a FN-button + Internal Fuji Lens Roadmap with 8mm, 200mm and… 33mmF1.0!

OK X-folks… after the latest announcements, I’ve updated my rumor ranking and saw that I’ve shared 87,27% correct rumors.

That’s waaaaay too high for a rumor site, and so I decided to take a little risk, and share a rumor I’ve just received from an anonymous source with nick-name (thanks a lot for sharing, btw :-) ).

The good thing is: it won’t take long to see if the information shared is correct or not… we just have to wait and see, if the X-T1 firmware will make the video button a function button.

But here is the whole story:

X-T1 FIRMWARE

FN

As you know, Fuji said there will be a new Firmware coming soon. Mostly it’s all about adding XF35mmF2 compatibility to current X-series cameras. However, there might be some extra tidbits, at least for X-T1 shooters.

In fact, the anonymous source says that:

A new firmware update for the X-T1 that will make the video button a function button… as well as some other unspecified updates!

LENS ROADMAP

The source also shares information about an Internal Fuji Roadmap.

there is an internal fujifilm lens roadmap that includes a 8mm, a 200mm and the 33mm.

Yep, it’s the 33mmF1.0. However, according to the source, Fuji is still working to fix issues like AF-speed, and at least this source says that it’s not sure that the XF33mmF1.0 will ever see the light of day! But I’m confident (read this rumor).

No plans for a wide instax printer at this stage.

The Polish site optyczne (translation) posted it’s review of the XF35mmF2 WR.

FR-reader umad?! was so kind to go though the review and the Charts, and made a Summary for us

umad?! says it is:
-the second sharpest Fuji lens (close to the 90mm), much sharper than the f/1.4 version all across the frame
-it’s near perfection (Bokeh, Sharpness, astigmatism, spherical aberrations, reflective coating)
only drawbacks are:
-it’s electronically corrected (like those Zeiss Batis lenses ;))
-it has a coma (no problem, as long as you don’t do astro)
-it has a bit too much CA

Here is optyczne’s the PROS and CONS list:

Advantages

handy, yet sturdy and sealed housing.
sensational picture quality in the center of the frame.
reasonable image quality at the frame edge.
moderate lateral chromatic aberration,
no problems with spherical aberration,
negligible astigmatism,
good work against bright light,
quiet and accurate autofocus.

Defects:

a large longitudinal chromatic aberration,
a large coma,
high vignetting,
a clear distortion.

At first glance, adding a XF35mmF2 prime to an already existing lineup of XF35mmF1.4 and Zeiss Touit 1.8/32 offerings looks like an unusual choice. But then again, the new XF35mmF2 R WR is slimmer, lighter and less expensive than its internal competition. It’s also weather resistant and tailored to the hybrid viewfinder of the X-Pro1 (and its highly anticipated successor).

Size comparison: Zeiss Touit 1.8/32, XF35mmF1.4 R and XF35mmF2 R WR
(shot with X-T1, XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR + XF1.4x TC WR)

Despite its attractive price tag, the XF35mmF2 R WR is made in Japan with a high build quality and an all metal exterior. The aperture ring may very well be the best I’ve ever encountered in an XF lens, and I also like the handling of the focus ring. To me, they feel “just right”.

X-T10, XF35mmF2 R WR, f/3.2, Lightroom

With 9 rounded aperture blades, the XF35mmF2 R WR delivers pretty smooth bokeh. The minimum focus distance (MFD) is 35cm, so you can get close to your subject. However, similar to the X100/S/T, shooting wide open at or near MFD can lead to some dreamy softness. It disappears as soon as you stop down to f/2.8 or f/3.2.
