Full Fuji X-E1 review at Luminous Landscape!

The autumn is here, and luminous landscape took some nice pictures with the X-E1 and posted a clear review about this camera (now available also in Germany).

The X-E1 has many Pros. For example the tester defines the Fuji X-Trans sensor as superb. As he already noticed for the X-Pro1, also the X-E1 image quality is competitive to what came out of his Leica M9. If you doubt the X-system image quality is up to pro-standards, he suggest to check out Zack Arias’ review (you can see pictures of the X-Pro1 compared with Leica M9). The high ISO performance is also exceptional. Just take a look at Roels‘ pictures taken from ISO 200 up to ISO 25600. The X-E1 produces professional-grade jpegs and has a good auto-focus

What irritates the tester is the absence of user-controllable minimum ISO settings in the auto-ISO mode. Let’s hope for a firmware upgrade that will fix this. The second thing that irritates the tester is a problem that’s harder to fix: the placement of the AF button: “One of the pleasures of working with an EVF is the ability to focus pretty much anywhere in the field of view.  The catch is that to change the focus-point, one has to press the AF button. With the camera to one’s face, this is hard to do” (same problem of the X-Pro1).

All in all a really serious mirrorless system camera from Fuji. “Fuji is, undoubtedly, one of the most creative players in this field, and their offerings are getting ever richer.”

  • OK that was the final push to make my decision to sell the E-M5 and go for the Fuji X-E1. The Olympus seems to be a better all around camera and more reliable with its AF but after owning an X100 I became a Fuji fan and have been waiting for something like the X-E1 and it seems not to have any major problems.

Does anyone know about the European availability of the X-E1 + 35/1.4 kit? Or is it Asia only where it’s sold?

  • No 35mm bundled has been planned for Europe but it might come one day. I noticed this morning the 18-55 mm kit is available on ebay in Malaysia! Very few units but no doubt we’ll see more soon!

    • Okay it is a pre-order i read a little too fast! My mistake.

  • I was playing with the X-E1 in the store yesterday. Funny thing was that the new viewfinder made me feel a bit dizzy. I wonder if it could be of the higher resolution? Because with the X100 I use the evf all the time without problems.

Also I felt that the evf was a bit smaller than the X100. Could anyone confirm if this really is true or not?

Although I have to say that with the new sharp evf and the 3x magnification manual focus was quite easy compared with before. I could definetly see myself using legacy-lenses with the X-E1 without problems.

  • Being a x-pro1 user for several months, i too feel that the AF button would be better placed for right hand access. The best option i see would be be be able to assign the Af button to the Fn programmable button located on top right, in a future FW

  • Wait a minute. Is it so, that you have to press an AF button AND the directional arrows to change the focus point?
