TIME :: Andrew Quilty Documents Life in Afghanistan with Fujifilm X-Pro2 + Is the X-Pro2 the Perfect Reportage Camera?

Today’s story brings us deep in the heart of Afghanistan, where since three years now Andrew Quilty is documenting the ongoing war and life, using mostly the Nikon D810.

But since a few months he added the Fujifilm X-Pro2 + XF23mm lens to his equipment. And looking at the EXIF data of his images, it seems that more and more of his work is now done with the X-Pro2. You can see his images at the TIME magazine here.

Many of you won’t be surprised by the fact that Andrew chose the X-Pro2 to document life & war in Afghanistan. As these Poll results clearly show, the majority of X-shooters believe that the Fujifilm X-Pro2 fits really well with certain styles like Street, Reportage, Documentary photography.

But what is it that makes the Fujifilm X-Pro2 so popular for these Photography Genres?

Maybe it’s the sleek and simple rangefinder style. Maybe it’s the corner placement of the viewfinder, which allows you to have the left eye free to see the whole scene. Or maybe it’s the OVF, which has the huge advantage to actually show you what’s happening outside your frame (and to save battery life). And maybe (just maybe) it could be, for some, even the lack of a tilt screen: one less thing to worry that could eventually break, especially when shooting in flustered and chaotic situations like conflict zones.

Maybe all these little things (and more) together make the X-Pro2 the ideal tool for the street and reportage.

Whatever it is… at the end of the story we have an X-shooter out there, who gets his hard job done with the X-Pro2… a work that is worth to be checked out at the TIME here.

When most photographers think of shooting sports, they think of 400mm glass on the 50 yard line. When I think of sports, I think about ultra-wide, ultra close. That said, any sporting event involves fast moving action and the need for equipment that can both quickly respond, and take a bit of abuse. These things were on my mind when I covered The Race of Gentlemen this year.

Once a year, tattooed and heavily bearded men (and a few women) gather in Wildwood, New Jersey, and take over a section of the beach. With beer on tap, loud music, and louder motorcycles and cars, this motley crew waits for the tide to recede and then grinds up the sand racing antique vehicles down a quarter-mile. Known as The Race of Gentlemen, the event is a celebration of a time long passed.

Fujifilm X-T2 Vs. X-Pro2 :: Autofocus Differences… And Why the X-T2 is (and Will Always Be) Better for Sports!

We just heard it form TheCameraStoreTV here: the Fujifilm X-T2 is, along with the Sony A6300, the only mirrorless camera that can compete with DSLRs (that’s their opinion). And in some cases it also tracks better than the Sony A6300.

So what happened to Fujifilm? Where does this AF-speed boost come? Is AF-tracking now really more accurate and C-AF faster? And especially… will the X-Pro2 ever catch up to the level of the X-T2 via Firmware Update?

There is quite a bit of confusion regarding this, just read the comments to this facebook post on FR, so high time to say a few things:

  1. Customizable AF-tracking: everyone out there, who’s going to test the X-T2 AF-tracking, should study and get familiar with the new customizable AF-tracking options. As demonstrated in the TCSTV Video, they really seems to work great. It’s a huge bonus of this camera compared to its direct competitor, the Sony A6300… and also compared to the X-Pro2.
    And the X-Pro2?: Will the X-Pro2 get these new AF-C Custom Settings functions? The Answer is: NO. Fuji said it clearly. The X-Pro2 Firmware 2.00 Update in October 2016 will implement the new AF-algorithm, but not the custom settings functions.
  2. The Magic Algorithm: The first reviews seem to indicate, that the X-T2 focusses faster than the X-Pro2. Is it really like this? Actually not. The fastest AF is still 0.06 sec. So what… just a Placebo? Not really. The algorithm has been improved, so that the X-T2 now uses phase detection 2/3 of the time, whereas phase detecion usually works only 1/3 of the time on the X-Pro2. More at fujifilm-x.
    And the X-Pro2?: The improved algorithm is the main course of the meal in the upcoming Fujifilm X-Pro2 2.00 Firmware Update (scheduled for October 2016). So yes… your X-Pro2 will get the new algorithm. Official announcement at fujifilm
  3. The Vertical Booster Grip – shorter Blackout & 11fps: the performance of the X-T2 is split between camera and grip. To take the most out of the camera, use the X-T2 with the grip attached. The booster grip reduces the EVF blackout time and allows you to shoot at 11fps.
    And the X-Pro2?: No Booster Grip for the X-Pro2 :( . Of course you can use the OVF (no blackout time at all), but OVF might not be your preferred choice in case you use longer zoom lenses.

So, if you plan to buy an X-camera and shoot also a lot of sports, then consider the 3 points mentioned above. The overall AF-experience will be better with the X-T2, because of the added AF-tracking features, the shorter blackout time and, in case you need it, you can shoot at 11fps.

However, if you don’t shoot much sports and you are mostly a single AF-shooter, then you will get the same improved AutoFocus algorithm of the X-T2 also on the X-Pro2 with the Firmware 2.00 Update in October. This means, the X-Pro2 will use phase detection more often.

Upgrade from Fuji X-T1 to Fuji X-T2

I somehow have the feeling, that Ted Vieira is not the only X-shooter out there at the moment, who struggles with this question: is the Fujifilm X-T2 worth the upgrade from the Fuji X-T1?

Well, actually Ted has no hesitations, since he says he would switch “in a heartbeat“. But he has also a few words of love for the X-T1 at the end (well done Ted… a bit of Love for the X-T1 doesn’t hurt these days).

A month ago, I’ve launched a “Super-Poll” here, where I asked you which camera do you prefer for the different photography genres. Several thousands of X-shooters have dropped their vote, and it turns out that in most cases X-shooter prefer the X-T2.

However, the X-Pro2 shines in 3 photography styles: Street, Documentary and Travel Photography.

The Poll results show that the two cameras don’t really compete with each other. The X-Pro2 and its rangefinder style with HVF corner placement perfectly harmonizes with the small Fuji primes, making it a ideal package for documentray photography & Co. But if you are looking for the better allrounder, than I’d recommend you to grab the Fuji X-T2.

That said… you know what you mainly shoot, you know your needs. And you have the answer!
