Sigma CEO: “I Would Really Like to Make Fujifilm X Mount Lenses, but Resources are Limited and Other Projects have Priority”

In a recent interview to lenstip, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki said regarding making Fujifilm X mount Sigma lenses:

“I really would want to but, you know, our resources are limited and it’s all a matter of priorities. I really wish we could make a lens for the X mount system but right now, just because our resources are limited, we don’t have such a plan. We have too many ongoing projects.”

Here on fujirumors we shared a rumor, that Sigma wants to see an increase in Fujifilm market share, before they start making lenses for Fujifilm.

It seems we can definitely put aside hopes for Sigma X mount glass.

Not sure if it mitigates the pain, but you can for example use the Fringer Smart AF adapter, which supports the Sigma 50/1.4 ART, Sigma 85/1.4 ART, Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS, Sigma 50-100/1.8 ART, Sigma 24/1.4 ART, Sigma 135/1.8 ART, Sigma 100-400 and many more.

Foveon full frame camera coming?

“That is the basic plan but everything is possible. We might even use an APS-C sensor again.”

He sets his priorities:

“We will work more on full frame mirrorless lenses […]; then probably there will be mirrorless cameras with APS-C and then, full frame DSLR“

And how many engineers are involved in designing one lens?

“A typical team consists of 1 optical designer engineer, maybe 3 or 4 mechanical engineers, 1 or 2 software engineers and maybe 1 or 2 electronic engineers so not more than 10 people. In the next stages more specialists become involved: prototype engineers, production system engineers so, in total, several dozens of people are engaged in a production of a new lens. If you add the die design, I think it’s close to 100 people for one product.“

Kipon Baveyes EF-FX AF Autofocus “Speedbooster” Adapters Review

When I was at photokina 2018, I stopped at the Kipon booth, and checked out the Kipon EF-FX 0.7x focal reducer (the quivalent of Metabones’ Speedbooster). Since I couldn’t test it, all I can say it that it feels very well build.

PROS

  • all metal very sturdy build
  • USB port for firmware
  • similar results to Viltrox and Metabones focal reducers, and no so buggy like the Viltrox
  • AF for stills is pretty good

CONS

  • with some lenses swirly bokeh (the reviewers likes it, but some others might not like it)
  • X-H1 IBIS sometimes gives vignetting and ND sometimes creeps into frame
  • AF is not as reliable as native lens
  • not for streets and sports photography
  • Video AF is not great

RUMOR: SIGMA Will Make FUJIFILM X Mount lenses if X series Camera Sales Increase by 20%

Back in 2014, when Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki was asked if they will ever make lenses for the X system, the CEO answered:

“mirrorless cameras are very promising future products. We always plan to expand our product line for mirrorless cameras. If possible, we would like to support as many systems as possible. But our engineering resources are limited.”

At time the X shooter community started to have a bit hope, but sadly those nice Sigma ART lenses never came for the Fujifilm system.

But why?

Well, according to a new source (thanks), Sigma will consider making lenses for Fujifilm X system if they see about a 20% increase in Fujifilm bodies shipping. Take this rumor with a pinch of salt for now.

A 20% camera shipping increase is a very difficult goal to achieve, especially since competition is growing strong in the mirrorless market. But Fujifilm has a pretty affordable powerhorse coming soon: the Fujifilm X-T3. Let’s hope it will help to get closer to those 20% increase.

So while at this point it is difficult for me to remain optimisitc about Sigma supporting the X system in future, the current workaround is use one of the smart adapters for the Fujifilm X / GFX systems, which will allow you to use Sigma lenses with autofocus on your Fujifilm camera.

You can for example use the Fringer Smart AF adapter, with since firmware 2.20 supports the Sigma 50/1.4 ART, Sigma 85/1.4 ART, Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS, Sigma 50-100/1.8 ART, Sigma 24/1.4 ART, Sigma 135/1.8 ART, Sigma 100-400 and more.

Nikon F Mount to Fujifilm GFX Smart AF Adapter Almost Here and Steelsring Smart Adapters EF/FX and EF/GFX Firmware 2.02/2.04

Nikon F to Fujifilm X Smart Adapter

Steelsring is about to release their Nikon F to Fujifilm GFX mount smart adapter. You can see the latest protoype in the image above. On their website here, they write:

Main features:

  1. Support Nikon AF-S G and E type lens, and AF-P G type lens contrast based AF in GFX 50s body.
  2. Electromagnetic diaphragm of type E Lens can be controlled by GFX 50s body, allows AF in full open ( decided by camera body ) and step down for exposure.
  3. Diaphragm of G type lens was manually controlled by aperture ring of adapter in real-time, so AF is conducted in real effective aperture as exposure. AF performance may be bad in low light/contrast, benefits are 1) Real aperture priority, 2) and totally no noise of consistent IRIS moving.
  4. Full EXIF info recording. ( For G type lens, only the current max open aperture was displayed and recorded, no way to adjust it ).
  5. Lens VR was support and effective on demand.

FX mount version adapter is in design phase, maybe with better performance of PDAF and auto aperture control version for your choice.

Note:

Support to AF-D type lens will be very limited, EXIF may works, but no AF absolutely.

Firmware Updates

Steelsring has a new firmware for the EF-FX and EF-GFX adapters.

For both EF/FX and EF/GFX, followings were updated:

ZedProMedia compared the old Fujifilm X-H1 fimrware ver.1.02 with the brand new firmware 1.10, also using a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens with Fringer smart adapter

He notices that:

  • the AF improvement during video recording is massively improved with lenses like the XF56mmF1.2 and better also with XF10-24. Smooth and accurate AF.
  • with the Fringer with the Sigma 18-35mmF1.8 more jumpy AF
  • Auto ISO exposure not flickering anymore, very smooth
  • this update will make a lot more people happy

Mindblowing AF

ZedProMedia is not the only one, who thinks Fujifilm got it right. Our Fujifilm X-H facebook group is starting to fill with enthusiastic comments as well as Keno’s video demonstrations here.

“I was super close switching to Sony … I couldn’t use the X-H1 on a gimbal with AF. Had to use my X-T2s […] Now I can sell my X-T2s finally and buy a second X-H1 ?”

It does look blazing fast indeed… and if it’s too fast and not smooth enough, you can set the a different AF transition speed :) .

Firmware: The Good and The Bug

Here is some more firmware feedback, but it’s still from the previous firmware version (X-T2 ver. 4.00 and X-H1 ver. 1.02). The current versions are 4.10 for the X-T2 and 1.10 for the X-H1.

Steelsring EF/GFX Bug Fix Firmware 2.03 Released

Steelsring just released a firmware version 2.03 for its EF/GFX smart adapter (wrong lens info setting for zoom lenses bug fix)

We remind you that last week Steelsring said that the EF/GFX type II smart adapter will be available in early June, with builtin tripod collar and that Nikon/GFX and Nikon/FX adapters are in prototyping now.

Laowa 9mm F2.8 Review:

Here some excerpts:

  • absolutely tiny and stelar build quality
  • rectilinear lens, nice straight lines right to the corners
  • It is really sharp in the 3/4 central part of the frame, but it loses a little bit of sharpness towards the edges, there’s also a fair bit of vignetting when shot at f/2.8
  • some gorgeous sun stars
  • vibrant colours and some great contrast
  • this lens is pure fun, fun, fun!
  • It’s such and amazing performer, especially when you take the small size into account.
  • suggest retail price of $499
  • Easily one of the most usable lenses I’ve ever mounted on my X-series system (And I have mounted A LOT over the years!)
