Fujifilm GF Lenses “Superlative” Sharpness Results :: It Feels Like You Can Step Into Each Image :: Clearly the New ‘State Of the Art’ for Fashion

The French site Le Monde De La Photo published its first report about the Fujifilm GFX.

It’s just an early first look, but for those interested in “independent” reviews, this is one of those.

They also published a nice graph (see image above), where they list the sharpness of the various GF lenses. Most of the time they perform “superlative” (dark blue) to “excellent” at any aperture, focal length, from the center to the corner. Only the zoom lens, the GF 32-64, is only “good” (green) at 46mm and F4 in the corner.

It seems Fujifilm is about to release on the market some really amazing lenses… again :-)

Here some excerpts (google translated:

LENS PERFORMANCE: The dive was calculated on the basis of standard style Jpeg, as Raw conversion software was not yet available. Overall the sharpness is always of high level, from very good to superlative according to the focal length and the openings. Only the corner area is sharply recessed at the focal length of 46 mm on the zoom, in all cases the dive is superlative over the field at medium apertures. The vignetting is never annoying and the chromatic aberration almost invisible, the only small defect noted is a cushion distortion (-0.15%) a little strong on the 120 mm macro that can be used to make reproductions of Works of art or documents, a little post-processing will be required.

AUTOFOCUS: the contrast detection autofocus is very precise but not always ultra reactive, and the continuous shooting at 3 frames second is not really targeted sport but sufficient to capture Changes of attitude of a model in portraiture.

ISO: On our “Nesie” basic test with a maximum sensitivity of 12,800 Iso, there is little degradation of the structure of the image, with the rise of a very light grain observable at 100% screen but quasi- Invisible on a glossy A1 paper print. The contours will nevertheless be a little less sharp than at 6 400 Iso, a grade that does not present more granulation than an average film format 100 Iso

Markus Klinko & Koala

FR-readers will know Markus Klinko quite well. He is the photographer behind the amazing David Bowie exhibition and I shared his work several times on FujiRumors and the exhibition is still on world tour. You can discover more about the David Bowie exhibition and Markus’ work at markusandkoala.

I would say that for me, the GFX is clearly the new ‘state of the art’ camera system (for high-end advertising, fashion and celebrity portraiture type work). I would go as far as saying it is the best camera ever built, and I would expect it to become a ‘game changer’ in the industry. TOP OF THE SHOTS… at the X-Shooter Facebook Zone!

Paul Andrew Dunker‎: I finally got out to play with my new Fuji X-T2. There was some seriously cool fog in the city today, offering a chance to get some really peaceful black and white shots. I have been extremely impressed with Fujifilm cameras since the X100S. The X-T2 is a game changer, though. Even coming from a Nikon D800e, equipped with all of the best lenses available, I don’t feel like I’m giving anything up shooting on the Fuji. The amount of detail and dynamic range available are nothing short of miraculous for a camera this size. Bravo, Fujifilm.

Estimated Price of GF 110mmF2, GF 45mmF2.8 and GF23mmF4

So, how much will the next GF lenses cost? At this stage, I want to make clear that an estimated price has been set by Fujifilm, but it’s not final… as so often, changes can be made until the last second.

I’m in talk with sources, who asked me to wait for the final price tag. All that seems sure for now, is that Fuji would like to keep the price of the GF 110mmF2 below $3,000.

However, some prices already surfaced on the web.

  • Fujinon GF 23mmF4 = $2599
  • Fujinon GF 45mmF2.8 = $1699
  • Fujinon GF 110mmF2 = $2799

Again… take it with a grain of salt, since Fujifilm is known to change price tag anytime, even after the announcement of gear, like it happened with the X70, where the price was lowered 3 days after pre-orders were already open.

I’ll let you know as soon as I get the final price from sources.

Monochrome Fujifilm X-Pro1 M and X100S M Available – Converted by Maxmax

If you always dreamed of a monochrome Fujifilm, then this might interest you.

The company Maxmax is converting th X-Pro1 and X100S to Monochrome cameras.

  • X-Pro1 M = $2,425
  • X100S M = $2,600

Expensive? Well, at least it’s considerably cheaper than the Leica M Monochrome ;)

I remind you that at a certain stage, Fujifilm managers publicly said that they are considering to make a monochrome X-Pro, but they are trying to understand how much interested there is on the market for that. So I launched a Poll here on FujiRumors, where you guys showed no big love for a X-ProM and shortly after, because of this poll, Fujifilm killed any plan. This is a true story shared publicly by a Fujifilm insider and shows that sometimes you guys have a terrific influence on Fuji’s plans (like the revival of the X-E3). Read more here.

Fuji X-T2 and X-T1 – a New Perspective on Myanmar in 2017

Myanmar Today
As I sit reflecting on my just completed photographic expedition, it’s been quite an amazing experience having spent a month photographing the wonders of Myanmar. I think for me the huge difference has been (compared to when I was there last five years ago – or especially 12 years ago), everybody now has a device in their hand. For weal or woe change is coming quickly to Myanmar. The changes are obvious as people rush to catch up to the rest of the world. It’s a shock to see everybody with a device in their hand – in a country where the average wage is only $2-$5 per day (sim cards and devices must be very cheap there). I preferred it to how it was on my last two visits but nobody can blame them for wanting to catch up with the new millennium. However, for now it’s still a very special place. I am not sure how long that will last, but at least for now I leave with some very special memories and 6 times 64gig SD cards filled with the evidence of those experiences.

I have travelled Asia now extensively for over a decade shooting street and environmental portraits. Even having been to Cambodia over 12 times, and countless times in Vietnam and other places, I can still say that Myanmar is the most special in all of Asia. I think it’s the combination of the lovely friendly people, the gorgeous little kids running around with the Thanaka paste on their faces, the men spitting their disgusting beatle-nut everywhere, and the gorgeous light – oh that light. It seems that every corner one walks around or every step one takes, another photo opportunity presents itself. Where I live in Australia is like a moonscape (photographically speaking), compared with the photographic opportunities in Burma – no wonder my cameras stay locked in their cupboard for most of the year!
