Fujiflm GFX Facts

I’ve recently made a complete and comprehensive overview over all known and rumored facts about the Fujifilm GFX. Well, I won’t bother you with the whole list again, just highlight a few aspects (and correct others) that are new and final.

Most of it comes from the Fuji Guys GFX first look, which you can find in the Live Blogging (that is still updated).

  • New Super Fine JPEG setting. Little compression, but huge files (takes 10 seconds to render a preview in Lightroom according to thedigitaltrekker – see Live Blogging)
  • The Top LCD Panel is customizable and also changes if you are in video or stills mode
  • The Top LCD Panel colors can reverse colors, to make them easier to read in low light
  • 14 bit RAW files (and not 16 bit, as the Swiss Fujifilm Manager said)
  • You can create TIFF files in camera
  • Electronic shutter up to 1/16000 sec
  • The focal plane shutter allows to make cheaper lenses without leaf shutter. The GF lenses are therefore less expensive to produce.
  • Pinch to zoom capable touch screen
  • First curtain electronic shutter reduces shutter shock, decreases shutter lag time. But over 1/1000 you have issue of vignetting and also bokeh is affected. But in the electornic first curtan shutter mode the camera automatically switches to mechanical shutter when it goes to 1/1000.
  • Up to 9 frames bracketing
  • You can chose between 117 or 425 AF points
  • GFX body + 63mm weight 1230 g
  • GFX body + memory card + battery weight 825g
  • shipping Feb. 23 according to Amazon
  • shutter endurance supporting up to 150,000 shots
  • Fujifilm has already developed a bridge software where testers could tether and open pictures with Capture One – via ivanjoshualoh
  • Shooting rate of 3 frames per second for a burst of 13 frames (compressed RAW)

Fujifilm GFX :: The True Story About a Secret Meeting (and Test) That Convinced Fujifilm to Go Medium Format

A Secret Meeting

Today I would like to share with you an insight story, about the probably decisive moment, that convinced Fujifilm to go Medium Format.

I’ve been told this story back in mid 2015 by a trusted source while chatting on Skype, soon after my first Medium Format rumor. Today I got an email from the very same source, who told me that I’m free to share the story with all of you guys… and I’m happy to do that right now :-)

For this story, we have to go back to sometimes in 2014.

Imagine the scene:

A confidential meeting amongst the most important people at Fujifilm. The big question in the room: should we go Medium Format?

At that time, Fujifilm was looking closely at the Medium Format Pentax 645z. The camera sold better than Pentax expected, and many reviews praised it. TheCameraStoreTV said back in 2014 about the Pentax 645z here, that it has the best IQ for stills they have ever seen.

But TCSTV also made a final and important remark: the newest Full Frame sensors, like the one on the Nikon D810, could narrow the IQ gap between FF and MF.

So was it worth for Fujifilm to go Medium Format?

The Decisive Test

Fujifilm decided to make a test, that will help them to decide if Medium Format will have a future or not. And it was as simple as that:

Fujifilm took a RAW file of the Medium Format Pentax 645z and processed it using their unique image X processing engine. And guess what? The image quality Fujifilm got out of the Pentax RAW file was already superior to the original Pentax image simply by applying their own image processing algorithm.

This realization laid the foundation for Fujifilm’s decision to go Medium Format… but it was not enough!

Fujifilm wanted more

A better processing engine was not enough for Fujifilm…

They also decided to make some hardware related tweaks to the Medium Format sensor. So they customized the microlenses in front of the sensor and optimized the silicon process. This will allow Fujifilm to improve the overall image quality even more.

At the end of the day, Fujifilm’s magic trinity (processorcustomized MF sensor – GF lenses) will very likely raise quite a bit the bar for Medium Format 33×44 sensors… and the gap to Full Frame should be more significant again. But to be sure of that, we have to wait and see how that GFX beast performs in real life. And it’s not a long wait anymore… January 19 is just around the corner… and I’m ready for the live blogging ;)

So this is the true behind the scenes story, that convinced Fujifilm to go Medium Format. And very soon, a few years after that test, the Fujifilm GFX will finally be reality.

The Fujifilm GFX… A Winner or Not? For Pros or Also for Enthusiasts? – POLLS

Join 4,600+ Members at the Fujifilm GFX Facebook Group

These must be quite nervous days at the Fuji HQ, since in just the next few weeks and months the market (so, we, the photo geeks ;) ) will decide if the GFX was a winner or not.

Now the big question is: Will the Fujifilm GFX sell well?

Another interesting one is: With a price tag of $6,500/€7000 for the body, will the Fujifilm GFX appeal “only” to professional photographers, or also to the much larger enthusiasts crowd?

If the Fujifilm GFX will make it also into the camera bags of many enthusiasts, then this will be a great success for Fujifilm. And this is what Fujifilm hoped, when they said they will price the GFX “as affordable as possible“. Honestly I think they kept their promise, if you consider that Sony’s Medium Format sensor alone should cost Fujifilm a few thousand dollars (IIRC, Hasselblad, who uses the same sensor in the X1D, said that the sensor alone costs $4000).

And now the surveys, which I’ve split in 3 categories: Polls for Pros*, Enthusiasts and Amateurs. Please answer only in the category you feel to belong to.
*Pros are photographers, who make money out of their photography

Happy voting… and something tells me that this might be a Poll that the Fujifilm management will look very closely at ;)

Fujifilm reads you… and how you even influenced decisions of the managment in the past.

The Fujifilm GFX Will Cost €6,999 (Trusted Source) :: GFX Body/Lens Price Comparison €/$

Unless there are some last second changes, here is the current price tag for the Fujifilm GFX. The price is in Euro and is shared by trusted source. Right next to the price in € I’ve shared the currently rumored price in $ (which is still unconfirmed).

Fujifilm GFX: € 6,999 ($6,499)
Fujinon GF 63mm f/2.8: € 1,599 ($1,499)

Keep in mind, that there might be differences from EU country to EU country. But most should have the €6,999 price tag. And, as usual, the price in Europe is probably higher than the one in USA.

Price for the other lenses as leaked yesterday: Fujinon GF 32-64mmF4 lens $2,299 – Fujinon GF 120mmF4 macro lens $2,599
