Kipon: “IBELUX 40mmF0.85 Performs Better on Fujifilm than Sony, We Don’t know Why” Kipon 40mmF0.85 Reviews

Kipon Ibelux 40mm F0.85

Kai was at the Kipon booth at photokina, and noticed the pink Ibelux 40mm F0.85 MK II, which was announced back in September 2017.

You can check out Kai’s hands on video here, but I’d like to highlight on curious sentence the Kipon manager said, while Kai was trying to figure out if he’d like to test the Sony APS-C or the Fujifilm APS-C version of the lens. Kipon says:

The performance of Ibelux 40mm F0.85 is better on Fujifilm cameras than on Sony, we don’t know why.”

Kai’s impressions when shot at F0.85 on the Fujifilm X-T3:

  • lot’s of color fringing
  • soft
  • nice smooth bokeh

You can find another Kipon IBELUX 40mm F0.85 review at alikgriffin here (with lots of sample images). His Pros and Cons:

  • Pros: Extremely shallow DOF, very creamy puffy bokeh, nice corner and edge performance when stopped down, sharp in the center, great bokeh at all apertures.
  • Cons: CA wide open, tendency for highlights to bloom wide open, vignetting at f0.85-f1, big, heavy.

Size Comparison: Fujifilm GFX 100S vs Sony A7III, Nikon D5, Canon 1DX, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Nikon D850, Fuji GFX 50R

Fujifilm GFX 100

The Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel camera is big, but how big is compared to other cameras with integrated battery grip, the Nikon D5 and the Canon 1Dx MK II?

I thought I am going to check this out in today’s article.

Just for fun, I did throw in the brand new Fujifilm GFX 50R in the comparison.

The size is about the same of the Nikon D5 and Canon 1Dx MK II, but consider that the Fujifilm GFX 100S has a 1.7x larger sensor in it as well as in body image stabilization (IBIS), and no course no mirror.

Seen from the top (images below), the Fujifilm GFX 100S much more protruding viewfinder makes it thicker overall. I remind you, that you can remove the viewfinder on the Fujifilm GFX 100S. Might be handy if you want to store it in the bag, since it makes the camera sensibly sleeker.

At the very bottom you can see the real life size comparison between the Fujifilm GFX 100S, GFX 50S and GFX 50R, that I made at during my stay at Photokina. You can see that, with battery grip attached, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is actually slightly bigger than the Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel.

I also added a size comparison between the Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel versus the Sony A7III, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7 and Nikon D850, but those cameras do not have an integrated battery grip.

Fujifilm Wins “Good Design Award 2018” with 29 Products in Recognition of their Design and Performance

Good Design Award

Fujifilm won 29 awards at the Good Design Awards 2018.

Now, I don’t know how the Good Design Award works, but if it’s like EISA and TIPA, then don’t take it too seriously. We have documented here, how EISA and TIPA work. Check the article out, if you want to know get clarity about the (not so transparent) award business.

With that said, Good Design gave an award to 29 Fuji products. Here are the cameras and lenses:

Fujifilm Manager: GFX 100 Full Sensor PDAF, no Crop 4K@30p. Engineer who Developed Velvia Film now Develops Film Simualtions

Fujifilm GFX

Hugh Brownstone had a half an hour chat with Fujifilm manager Justin Stailey. It’s an interesting and relaxed talk at a glass of beer, I invite you to check out here.

For those in a hurry, here are some key points from what the Manager says:

Fujifilm GFX 100

  • 100 MP sensor
  • IBIS, because 100MP is sensible to vibration
  • 4K @ 30P with full sensor readout (no crop). No pixel binning. It’s gonna be compressed in some shape or form
  • price under/around $10,000
  • 100% phase detection coverage, but lenses with lots of glass are heavier to move, so it’s never going to have as fast AF as APS-C
  • coming first half 2019

Fujifilm Color Science

  • metric color is different from memory color. Velvia was designed to make things look the way your mind remembers it (memory color). It’s interpretation, it’s how your brain sees it versus what was really there
  • one of the long time Japanese engineers at Fujifilm responsible for Velvia film simulation development, did actually also develop Velvia film in the past

Mixed Talk

  • new age of mirrorless is starting, since more player are in the market. The acceptability of mirrorless has increased now. Fujifilm focuses on what they do best, APS-C for sport, action and video, and Medium Format for portrait and fashion
  • pixels on GFX 50R and GFX 50S are bigger than full frame. Bigger pixels capture more light
  • sensor, lenses, processor, color science, the whole package
  • he does not like that photokina will take place every year in spring, right after CP+. A 2 years circle was better and Fujifilm has organized their announcements also according to photokina
  • just because we announced X-T3, it does not mean that the X-T2 is worst now. Photographer makes more difference than the gear
  • some dealers in USA already make more than 50% revenue by selling mirrorless

PhotoKina 2018 is Ready for Fujifilm GFX 50R and Fujifilm GFX 100S at 07:30 AM EST and FujiRumors is There for You!

FujiKina

Today Fujifilm will unveil the Fujifilm GFX 50R and the Fujifilm GFX 100S. The press event starts at 07:30 AM New York time.

And yep, I am here at Photokina 2018, and today I smuggled myself through the security controls and took a look at the Fujifilm booth, which they are building up right now.

Sadly the press conference room is under the highest level of control, and no chance to enter without press-card.

However, I noticed 2 Fuji guys entering the press hall, and one was holding a rangefinder medium format film camera in his hand (maybe the Fujifilm GF670, but it was hard to see exactly).

It’s pretty clear that they are going to show their rangefinder medium format heritage to the press, and then unveil the long rumored Fujifilm GFX 50R (which you can see who it looks like here).

Of course I will be live blogging non stop, so make sure to stay tuned on FujiRumors via Facebook, Instagram, RSS-feed and Twitter and to join our Fujiflm GFX facebook group as well as our Fujifilm GFX page.

P.S.: and of course on the way to Cologne I stopped at the Oktoberfest… it was simply fantastic… at least so they told me, since I can’t remember that much ;). But now I am back full power and ready for the ultimate blogging on FujiRumors!

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Concepts and Share Your X-Pro3 Wish List

Fujifilm X-Pro2 concept developed by Fujifilm and shared at senzo.co

Fujifilm X-Pro3

One of the top questions I got after the announcement of the Fujifilm X-T3, is when the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will come.

Well guys, in the Fuji world, rangefinder cameras like the Fujifilm X-Pro and X-E line, do not sell nearly as well as their SLR-like brothers, such as the X-T20 or the new X-T3.

Hence, Fujifilm is never in a hurry to release new iterations of those cameras. The Fujifilm X-Pro line for example even skipped the X-Trans II generation, and went from X-Trans I directly to X-Trans III.

And so far I have not heard anything reliable about the Fujifilm X-Pro3.

So all we can do for now, is imagine how we would like the Fujifilm X-Pro3 to be.

X-Pro3 Design

A FR-reader send me this Flickr link, where H.B. Kang imagines an X-Pro3 with vertical grip and new colors.

So I thought, why not, let’s talk Fujifilm X-Pro3 and start dreaming how it should be.

In addition to Kang’s X-Pro3, I will add down below some real Fujifilm X-Pro2 (and X-Pro1s) concept that Fujifilm studied during the X-Pro2 development. We have already shown them in this FujiRumors post, and you can find more images at senzo.co here.

I will start by launching a poll, where you can vote the top 3 features you’d like to see on the Fujifilm X-Pro3. Vote, and then let your imagination soar free in the comments.

NOTE: I mention the additional dials of the Olmypus PEN F in the poll. If you don’t know how it looks like check it out the images at BHphoto.

For the Fujifilm X-Pro3, I want... (max. 3 selections)
