Fujifilm X-T4 Video Autofocus Tested: Can You Trust it? Settings Nightmare, Inconsistency and Which XF Lenses Are Best for It

UPDATE: I have just been contacted by FR-readers, and I have been told that the latest firmware 1.02 for Fujifilm X-T4 improved autofocus during video with older lenses. Philip’s video was recorded before that. Would be fantastic if Philip could repeat the test to verify that.

Philip Bloom wonders, can you trust the Fujifilm X-T4 autofocus for video?

In my opinion, Philip did a great job, and this video is very helpful to figure out which lenses are best for video autofocus tracking and especially which settings are best for which lens.

Before the usual video summary, for those of you, who have no time to watch it right now, I’d like to highlight a few things from the video:

  • inconsistency: Some lenses work very well and reliably (such as the XF16-55mmF2.8), other were a complete nightmare (for example XF56mmF1.2)
  • settings nightmare (AF speed + Tracking sensitivity): some settings work great on a certain lens, but use the same settings on another lens, and you get totally different results. You must hence fine tune the settings differently for each lens
  • older lenses: older lenses are clearly not designed for video autofocus. Newer lenses work better
  • pulsing & jumping: that’s an issue that occurs with many XF lenses. On some lenses you can mitigate it a lot by changing settings
  • Confusing Settings: with AF-Speed, the higher you set the number, the faster the AF speed (logical). With tracking sensitivity, the higher the number, the slower it is (not logical).
  • Eye AF: can lose eye easily, especially if you wear glasses
  • Internal vs External recording: Record externally, and you have terrible results. Better record internally for best video autofocus
  • Overall: X-T4 is a fantastic camera (in fact his favorite camera close after the GFX100) and has all the power it needs for great video AF, but it’s the lenses that are holding it back for video AF.

I feel like lots of this is something that Fujifilm could improve via firmware update, even with older lenses, and I am confident Fujifilm will.

I personally used the XF18-55mm a lot for my teaching-vlogging, and it worked well on my X-T4. And in fact the 18-55 is one of the lenses that performed best in Philip’s tests.

Down below you’ll find the summary and the video, so you can see which lens worked best and which settings he recommends.

Philip Bloom did well to highlight all this, and of course here on FujiRumors we report about it, as I believe this is valuable feedback for Fujifilm.

What a day!

Fujifilm has released:

In all this buzz, I’d like to highlight one interview made by Cinema5D to top Fujifilm manager Makoto San.

Custom New Fujinon XF27mm f/2.8 Look, Fujinon Zoom Lenses Showdown & More XF Lens Roundup

Fellow FR-reader yukosteel wrote me this:

Here’s one more proof that one of your favorite Fujinon lens is really indestructible : )

It took years since you posted my effort on XF 27mm disassembly (thanks again), that leaded to lots of interesting conversations with other people and more mechanical discovery.

Today I finished one more manual focus mod of XF 27mm with broken electronics.

Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS Stress Tests vs X-H1, Panasonic S1H, OIS only vs IBIS only and More

Andrew comprehensively tested the IBIS on the Fujifilm X-T4. It’s a 30 minutes video.

Just so you know, when below we talk about “scientific test”, it means Andrew placed the cameras on a massage gun. That way, he was able to induce the same amount of vibration to all the cameras he tested.

Down below you will find the video and the summary in a nuthsell, for those who can’t watch the full video right now.

Fujfilm X-T4 Kits Now In Stock… and Finally I made My First Dolomites Hike with my X-T4

It was a long wait, but finally also various Fujifilm X-T4 kits are now in stock.

You can get the kit with the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 or the kit with the XF18-55mm f/2.8-4.

Btw, after a long online teaching marathon, that kept me locked down even after the COVID-19 lockdown was lifted, recently I finally had some time to get out and hike a bit on my beloved Dolomites again, which I had not photographed since last autumn, as you can see here.

And if until now I used my X-T4 only for video (and used Final Cut Pro to edit them), I finally can open up Capture One 20 again, and edit the X-T4 RAW files.

But I wonder…

… sure, I will use my X-T4 for the next weeks, as it’s new and shiny. But will my super-small X-E3 claim back it’s top spot in my camera bag, or will I just end up buying a bigger bag? I don’t know the answer yet.

RUMOR: Fujifilm Working on Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6

Hey there,

If you follow FujiRumors regularly, you will know about the rumor we shared back in March, saying that Fujifilm is working on a Fujinon XF70-300mm lens.

Many of you asked me which aperture range it will have.

Well, today I can finally disclose it.

Fujifilm will release a Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens.

Now, not sure if you remember, but over 1 year ago here, Fujifilm publicy asked the Fujifilm community, which lenses they should make next.

Among the options they offered us to vote, there was a Fujinon XF80-300mm f/4.5-5.6.

Personally I am very happy to see them going for lens slightly wider (70mm instead of 80mm) and faster (f4 instead of f4.5). I prefer it even more than a constant f/4 lens, as that one would be bigger, heavier and more expensive.

I hope Fujifilm will be able to keep it rather compact, like the Sigma 100-400mm.

But I’d love to hear what you guys think, so you can vote the survey down below.

I think this super-telephoto lens fits perfectly in the lens lineup, as a natural follow up the XF16-80mm f/4.

Fujifilm USA Manager: “Fujifilm X-T4: Lots of Pre-Orders and Available Mid-May”

Fujifilm USA manager Michael Bulbenko made a 10 minutes video on Instagram introducing the Fujifilm X-T4.

Just as the top Manager Toshi Iida said a few days ago in this must see interview, also Michael confirms the strong pre-orders for the Fujifilm X-T4.

But strong pre-orders in times of Coronavirus COVID-19 also introduce shipping difficulties.

Regarding the shipping, I must say I am confused. Let’s sum up the different official statements we got so far in chronological order.

  • March 26: Fujifilm Japan issues a press release, saying that the black X-T4 will ship as expected in late April, but the silver one has been postponed to late May
  • April 2: Fujifilm UK manager says that both colors, silver and black will ship in late April, but body only version. The kit versions will follow “weeks later”
  • April 9: Fujifilm USA manager says that nothing will ship in April, and all will ship in the 2nd or 3rd week of May

Maybe every country will get a different shipping time? That would be unusual for Fujifilm, but in these days everything is unusual.

If we look at stores, BHphoto marks it as available April 30, while Adorama expects it on May 4.

You can see the Manager video and a summary down below.
