DPR Fujifilm X-H2S Lab Test Results: Despite Big Speed Increase, Comparable Image Quality with X-T3 and X-T4

DRPeview has added the Fujifilm X-H2S to their lab test comparison tool. Their findings:

  • Overall, this is a good result: we were impressed with the X-T3 and 4, so maintaining comparable image quality despite the big speed increase is a creditable result.
  • slight increase in read noise as a result of the fast readout being seen as a reduction in usable dynamic range.

Maybe you have noticed that lately we tried to highlight also reviews from smaller youtube channels, along with the usual big ones.

Now, I won’t enter the discussion on why it seems that at least some of the big channels have a conflictual relationship with the Fujifilm managment, leading them to either ignore Fujifilm cameras (some never reported about the launch of the X-H2S) or to review Fuji gear… how can I say that… to review it not with the same care as they do with other brands.

But that’s not the article, where we want to talk about it.

What you need to know now is: we will keep covering the reviews of huge channels (in case they cover Fujfiilm, but highlight when they make errors like here and here), but also highlight smaller channels every now and then.

Small channels might not have the best studios, lights and audio, but they are often run by truely passionate photographers, who probably shoot more pictures with their gear out on the field than many of the huge channels combined. So their opinion, at least in my eyes, has just the same value the one of massive youtube channel.

So today we talk about TC, who owns the Sony A7IV and lots of lenses, but after his comparison with the Fujifilm X-H2S, he decided to sold off his entire Sony full frame kit. If you want to know why, you can find the video below as well as a summary.

Why are You Scared of PSAM? ;)

Before we go ahead, just a little consideration of myself. Why are you scared of PSAM?

Look, TC switched back to Fujifilm among the others because it has a PSAM dial and he loves it. So now we have a former Sony shooter coming back to the Fujifilm camp thanks to the Fujifilm X-H2S.

And isn’t that what we want? And what Fuji needs? More people shooting with their gear?

What damage does it do to us retro lovers?

Fujifilm has basically already said that there will be a Fujifilm X-T5, X-E5, X-T40, X-Pro4, X100V successor… and all of them with the retro feel we all love. That’s plenty of options that will continue to exist for us.

And now let’s see what motivated TC to sell all his Sony gear to switch to Fujifilm.

Fuji Guys: Fujifilm X-H2S Unboxing and How-To Videos (with Useful Shortcut Keys Section)

The Fuji Guys published their Fujifilm X-H2S unboxing and How-To videos.

Note that in the unboxing video you can’t see the hot shoe cover for the Fujifilm X-H2S, but to my knowledge that one should be included in the box. Speaking of hot shoes, many of you seem to go crazy for these hot shoes (and I have one myself too)… gives our Fuji’s a special touch ;).

As for the how-to video, it’s a recommended watch for all current and future Fujifilm X-H2S owners and there is a useful shortcut section starting from 12:47.

Fujifilm X-H2S Reviews: “X-H2S Trumps the Sony A1, Video Dynamic Range is Impressive”

CineD posted their technical test results for the Fujifilm X-H2S. And it’s a quite flattering one for the Fujifilm X-H2S. And also Gordon from Cameralabs tested the video side of the X-H2S (after covering the photographic side which we covered here).

And since we talk about the latest and greatest, in this mini-roundup I will add also reviews to the other two latest X gear items, the XF150-600mmF5.6-8 and the XF18-120mmF4.

Fujifilm X-H2S

As we said above, CineD shared their Fujifilm X-H2S lab test covering rolling shutter, dynamic range, and exposure latitude. in short:

the FUJIFILM X-H2S definitely trumps the C70 and even the Sony A1, while the 5 stops underexposed image looks almost as good as with the VENICE 2 in 4K ProRes HQ – and we are talking about a full-size cinema camera here. So, a solid 8 stops with additional wiggle room towards 9 stops – that’s quite impressive, and is actually better than most of the recent full frame consumer cameras. Good job, FUJIFILM! […]

The FUJIFILM X-H2S fares really well for a consumer camera in our lab test, especially when considering that it is an APS-C camera, not full frame. The rolling shutter performance is very good, the dynamic range results are impressive, as is the latitude test. It becomes clear from these results that the 14-bit sensor readout definitely is part of this good performance. 

So, you could actually say it is a BMPCC 6K on steroids with a ton of additional features like IBIS and all of the other advantages of a true hybrid camera, including a smaller form factor.

Did the Fujifilm X-H2S do the Trick? Or Investigating if Fuji’s PSAM Dial Cameras Brought New Customers into the X System – SURVEY

Iridient Developer 3.7.1 and X-Transformer 2.5.1 Updates Fix Fujifilm X-H2S Files Loading Error

Brian has released Iridient Developer 3.7.1 and X-Transformer 2.5.1 updates  today.

These updates contain just a single fix for loading errors that  could occur with some RAF images from the new Fujifilm X-H2S. The X-H2S seems to occasionally store RAF images in lossless compressed mode that contain an invalid RAW metadata field. This incorrect RAF metadata information would cause file validation to fail in Iridient applications and these files would give errors on loading.

The root cause would seem to be a firmware bug with the X-H2S as some RAF files with the same compression format from the same camera body/firmware have correct information and others don’t. So far Brian hasn’t been able to determine any specific trigger causing the bad information to be written. A workaround was found where Brian could just ignore the problematic data and determine the same information using an alternate method that allows these RAF images to be loaded successfully.

Fujifilm X-H2S Reviews Drop on the Web, with Lots of Happy (and Well Tracked) Faces

The Fujifilm X-H2S is falling into hands of fellow X shooters, and hence reviews are spreading all over the web.

In short we can say that this camera is making lots of people very happy. :) This is autofocus performance as never seen before on any Fujifilm camera, and at that level won’t be found even on the Fujifilm X-H2 or Fujifilm X-T5, as they both will feature a non-stacked 40MP sensor.
