Fujifilm X-Trans Vs. Bayer: Pros and Cons of Going Bayer or Sticking with X-Trans Sensor

X-Trans Vs. Bayer

First and foremost, let me say that I LOVE X-TRANS.

But the fact that I love X-Trans, does not prevent me from discussing the big Bayer Vs. X-Trans debate, that has recently been fueled again by DPReviewTV in the X-T100 review and Tony Northrup in his X-H1 review, in the most objective way as possible.

So today’s question is: is there any reason why Fujifilm should go Bayer also on higher end APS-C Fujifilm X-series cameras?

WARNING

Some people do probably not have the 5 minutes of time it needs to read this article. They will read the headline, and arguing in favor or against X-Trans/Bayer by default :) .

So for those people, who refuse to read the article and don’t go beyond the headline, I will at least make a bullet-point list, in the hope they will read that one at least.

This is a super short condensation and simplification of more complicated subjects, and as such it is naturally an inaccurate list. Each point will elaborated and clarified in all its shades below.

X-Trans Pros

  • less color noise at high ISO
  • less moiré (an advantage that will become negligible once APS-C sensor go beyond 30MP)
  • sharper compared to cameras with same pixel number and optical low pass filter, unless the processing in camera is very aggressive, like on X-A5 and X-T100
  • more pleasing “film-like” grain at high ISO

Bayer Pros

  • 20%-30% less processing power required (possible benefits listed below)
  • cheaper to produce than X-Trans

Brutally short conclusion:

  • X-Trans is better for image quality
  • Bayer is better for features and speed, unless Fujifilm can compensate for the extra 20-30% processing power required by the X-Trans sensor with a more powerful processor (present in Fujifilm X-T3), new sensor tech for faster sensor readout (maybe stacked sensor) and better heat management (present in X-H1)

If you want, you can now start your 5 minutes reading time :)

Fujinon GF Rumored Lens Roadmap Update: Tilt Shift Lens, GF20-35mm, GF 80mmF1.4 (not in 2018) & More

internal Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap Leaked on FujiRumors
internal Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap Leaked on FujiRumors

Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap

You might remember how here on FujiRumors we leaked Fujifilm’s interal GF lens roadmap already back in April 2017 (see screenshot above)!

But time passed, and there is more to share and to update… so let’s do it today.

GF 80mm F1.4

We broke the rumor of a crazy fast GF 80mm F1.4 (!!!) medium format lens back in June 2017.

However, keep in mind that a Fujifilm manager said here that they need 2 years to discuss, develop and finally make a camera and even more than 2 years in case of lenses.

So if in June 2017, when we shared the GF 80mmF1.4 rumor, the discussions about the GF80mmF1.4 just started, then now, 1 year later, IF Fujifilm really decided to go ahead with it, it will take them well over 1 year to come out with it.

Again… if Fujifilm decided to make it all.

But even if Fujifilm decided to make it, you should not expect any GF 80mmF1.4 lens at Photokina 2018, and I’d personally would not expect it before 2020 anyway.

Don’t worry, there will be lots of other great gear to enjoy at Photokina 2018, such as the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GF 50R.

Tilt Shift, UWA & The New Roadmap

According to our sources, we must add also a tilt shift lens for the GF system to the list of rumored lenses shared back in April 2017, so the updated and complete rumored GF lens list is the following:

  • GF 35mm F2.8 (coming 2018)
  • GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5 (in 2018 this or the GF 100-200)
  • GF 100-200mm F4.5-5.6 (in 2018 this or the GF 20-36)
  • GF 80mm F1.4 (not in 2018 – personally I’d not expect it before 2020)
  • Tilt Shift lens (coming 2018/2019)

Fujifilm plans to release 2/3 GF lenses a year, and since we already got the GF250mmF4 last month, we can expect a maximum of two more lenses in 2018.

Now, for 2018, the Fujinon GF 35mmF2.8 should be sure.

So now it’s your turn guys. Let us know which one you would prefer between the GF20-36, GF-100-200 and the tilt shift lens for 2018.

And make sure to join our Fujifilm GFX facebook group.

stay tuned,

Fujifilm X-T2 Firmware 4.00 First Looks, What SONY Thinks About Firmware Updates and Kaizen Makes LOTS of Sense

Fujifilm X-T2 FW 4.00 is Out

If you follow FujiRumors also on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter (and also allowed browser push notifications!!!), you will have received notification about the new firmware 4.00 for Fujifilm X-T2 about half a second after Fujifilm made it officially available for donwload.

You can download the new firmware here.

Does it Make Sense? – Part 2 :)

In case you missed it, make sure to check out our previous post about it and the huge discussion we are having there.

Of course the “it makes no sense” in my previous article is in part a provocation and surely ironic… but it’s also a bit of a reminder, that we should not take for granted what Fujifilm is doing. These updates cost money and upgrading old cameras means current customers are less likely to buy the latest and greatest Fujifilm gear.

But of course there is also the other side of the medal.

Fujifilm Kaizen firmware updates create brand loyalty and might even attract customers from other brands, who don’t get nearly as much firmware love as Fujifilm X and GFX shooters.

FujiRumors Notes
As the Fuji manager said to BHphoto (video below), the X-H1 has a shorter blackout time (100msec of blackout-time), when used in combination with electronic first curtain shutter. He says blackout is so short that it feels like shooting a DSLR. Fuji Guys confirm our rumor about face detection in 4K. Eterna film simulation looks really good, and as we rumored here, it will come via firmware to X-T2 (and maybe more cameras). However, for stills, Classic Chrome remains my favorite.

About Speculations of Fujifilm X-H1 having Two X Processor Pro Chips… and the Possibly Real Reason for Better AF and EVF black-out on X-H1

The Speculations

As we reported here, the Fujifilm X-H1 will be powered by the very same X Processor Pro that it already inside the X-T2, X-Pro2, GFX 50S and more.

However, there was some speculation that the Fujifilm X-H1 might/will have 2 X Processor Pro’s… speculation that got even stronger, after we reported about:

But where does this speculation of the two X-Processor Pro chips come from?

It all started with an interview a Fujifilm manager gave here in February 2017, where, at the launch of the GFX, he said:

The GFX has the same processor as the X-T2 and X-Pro2, actually it has got two of those processors”

I know, some people believe he actually ment “dual processor” (the current X-T2/Pro X Processor Pro is a dual processor), but at least in the way the manager said it, it really sounds like he ment 2 separated X Processor Pro.

UPDATE: However, in the description of the video, after the first reports here on FR they added:

In the video it’s said that the camera had a dual processor which is incorrect. The early plans for GFX was to have a dual processor but it’s been confirmed that it actually has a single processor.”

So one (dual) processor only. At least this is the official statement. Probably the manager just mixed up dual with two at the end.

So far I couldn’t find any official proof of the fact that the Fujifilm GFX 50S has two processors. Fujifilm does NOT mention this in any of their official specs sheets. And that’s strange to me… I mean, if Fujifilm really put two processors into the GFX, then why not share it proudly in public? Why should Fujifilm hide such a feature? Of course I can’t exclude the fact that the GFX has 2 processors (as the Fujifilm manager said)… I just wonder why Fujifilm does not share it publicy in the official spec papers.

The (Possibly) Real Reason

Now back to the Fujifilm X-H1…

I can’t exclude the fact that the Fujifilm X-H1 will have 2 processors, as I can’t exclude anything at this stage. Let’s wait for the full specs at the official announcement on February 14… maybe Fujifilm will tell us more by then.

But my humble and very personal opinion so far is that the rumored AF and EVF black-out improvement comes from the better heat dissipation the bigger Fujifilm X-H1 body allows.

Better heat dissipation means Fujifilm can make the X Processor Pro run to its very limits, without worrying about overheating.

But that’s all just specualtion for now. We will know more on February 14. And until then, make sure to follow FujiRumors on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter.

Major Fujifilm X-Pro2 Kaizen Firmware Update Will Add 4K Video and More

There Will Be Kaizen

Heay gsiys I AMSMAZING casnT BNelive…

* * Dutch vegetable break * *

Sorry, I was too excited to type… but now I’m more calm… so let me try again to write it down for you ;)

Dear Fujifilm Shooters,

some of you might remember, when back in 2013, the godfather of the Fujifilm X-series, Mr. Kawahara, said in this interview of 2013 that they are committed to improve their cameras via firmware updates because “we want you to use our camera longer and longer in your life.” (Note: Kawahara left Fujifilm in 2016, as reported here).

And indeed, we have seen many huge Kaizen firmware updates for many cameras in these years.

The FW updates were so big, that Fujifilm had to re-write entire camera manuals several times and Rico had to republish updated versions of his Fuji Tips and Tricks ebooks. And (unless you are an X100S/T) owner, you had the pleasure to feel what it means to “download a complete new camera… for free“.

Well… today I’m very excited to tell you, that there will be Kaizen love again… also for the Fujifilm X-Pro2!

Fujifilm X-Pro2: Level Up

I hear from trusted sources, that Fujifilm is working on a major firmware update for the Fujifilm X-Pro2, which will, among the others, give X-Pro2 owners 4K video and more.

Here on FujiRumors, the community asked for 4K on X-Pro2 multiple times, in dedicated articles and comments, and finally also Fuji Guy Billy joined Fujirumors critics on February 2017, when he said here he is also “fighting with Japan” to implement 4K on X-Pro2.

Well… it seemed all this pressure helped ;)

So, dear X-Pro2 shooters… be patient, and you will get your Kaizen Love.

Oh… and feel free to share the joy with all of us at the Fujifilm X-Pro user group on facebook. We also have an X-T User Group, if you are interested.

Time To Dream

4K is sure. But what else would you like? Tethering? And maybe the ability to adjust ISO via command dial? Anything else? Well, then say it here in the comments… you know those guys at the Fujifilm headquarter read us and X-ray your comments :)

*** You’ve Got The Power ***

Can Fujifilm ignore a unique community on the world-wide web that is able to drop 11,000 votes in a single poll within 2 days? Nope, they simply can’t :)

And if there is a reason why Fujifilm’s most known top manager, Toshihisa Iida, “loves” FujiRumors, then it’s because you guys provide Fujifilm an umatched amount of (free) feedback every single day in your comment and poll votes.

Your diligent (and massive) participation allowed Fujirumors to become the privileged channel that connects Fujifilm to its customers… this is more that I could have ever hoped for this blog! Thanks guys :)

Now, to keep our feet well set on the ground, I will also say that I’m aware we can’t always influence Fujifilm’s decision…

… however, sometimes, we can :)

In fact, it was your feedback and negative poll results, that killed the monochrome X-Pro1 and your positive pressure that revived the X-E3 plans and made Fujifilm say herewe are aware of the many X-E3 request”.  The feedback you give in polls makes it to internal Fujifilm meetings with the Press and, as said before, even Fujifilm top manager Toshihisa Iida “Loves” FujiRumors.

So guys, never stop it and keep up sharing your daily feedback to Fujifilm :)

have a GREAT day,

Fujifilm 2017 :: The Big Rumor Overview… and 2016 Rumor Check (91% Correct Rumors)

Crystal ball

So, Photokina is over. The most important announcements have been done. So it’s high time to put some order in the remaining rumors.

But first some facts:

  • 650+ blog post published in 2016 so far
  • 101 rumors shared in 2016
  • 13 rumors still to be verified
  • 81 correct rumors (+1 one more correct, but not in ranking. Read why at the bottom of this post)
  • 8 wrong rumors (but actually at least 4 of them were right at the time of sharing. It’s just Fuji that changed plans… that’s the risk I pay for sharing early rumors, and I accept that)
  • 91% correct rumors shared so far in 2016 (and it would be at least 95+%, if Fuji wouldn’t have changed plans on some long term rumors)

And now… what to expect next!

I don’t think Fujifilm will launch much more in 2016… but surprises are always possible. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.

In 2017 we should see the X100F and the X-T20. And of course the Medium Format Fujifilm GFX will hit the market. It’s also rumored that Profoto will add flash support for X-series cameras. And maybe, so my hope (but not a rumor), after some small and compact weather sealed lenses (35, 23, 50, 80), Fujifilm will also work again on the long rumored 8-16, 33/1 and 200. NOTE: the 33/1 and 200 were rumored in 2015, so they are not included in the 2016 overview.

Sounds already now like a very interesting 2017… and I’m confident Fujifilm will surprise us with something more. Stay tuned on FujiRumors to find it out.

My deepest thanks goes to all sources, who helped me a lot and reached a level of accuracy that is almost scary for a rumor site… I really would like to hug you all :-)

Also, thanks to everybody, who spotted some interesting Fuji related news/rumor/deal/review on the web, and took his/her time to drop me an email with the link to it. Much appreciated… and feel free to keep it up. ;-)
