Sony A7sIII vs Fujifilm X-T4: “Fujifilm X-T4 comes with Top-notch Features at a Much More Affordable Price”

Maybe the news might have passed under the radar, overshadowed by the Fujifilm announcement of the Fujifilm EF-60 flash and the Fujifilm EF-W1 commander, which everybody talks about today.

But I’d like to dedicate a space to a new camera that has been announced today, just in case you didn’t know, and it’s called Sony A7sIII.

It’s a fantastic camera, mainly for video, and it’s basically Sony’s statement that you better do not mess with them, when it comes to full frame cameras with great video performance.

BHphoto has put up a comparison roundup, where they compare the Sony A7sIII with the following cameras:

Overall they talk very good about the new Sony A7sIII and it wins many comparisons overall, although it’s though to compare cameras, which, in some cases, serve a different purpose.

However, overall, one of the cameras that comes out best from this comparison, is the Fujifilm X-T4, because, as they write:

the X-T4 comes in with a top-notch feature set at a much more affordable price […]

It does take advantage of that sensor size to create a smaller, yet still super-capable stills and video system that comes in at a much more affordable price point.

Read the full comparison here.

This kind of underlines once again the strength of an APS-C system: the balance!

But we have already discussed the balance vs. compromise argument in this dedicated post.

Congratz Sony, it’s a wonderful camera. But also congratz to Fujifilm, for releasing such a well rounded package with the X-T4.

TESTED: New Fujifilm X-T4 and GFX100 Firmware Brings Smoother Exposure Changes in Video, Except…

Earlier today Fujifilm released Fujifilm X-T4 firmware 1.03 and Fujifilm GFX100 firmware 2.01.

Of course FujiRumors reported instantly about it here, but now I have something more to add.

Despite being on a two week holiday with my wife in wonderful South Italy (see my Instagram), I was too curious to find out what the improvement was, and I made quick testings.

Here is what I found out.

According to quick tests I made on my Fujifilm X-T4, I can say that the exposure change is now smoother (not stepping like before), except in high speed modes (like 120 or 240 fps).

This is a major annoyance people had when shooting video, and I wonder why Fujifilm does not specify that in their official Fujifilm X-T4 and GFX100 firmware release notes, but hides it behind a vague “fix of a minor bug during a movie shooting“. It’s not a minor but, it’s a major one!

Happy to see it work smoother now! UPDATE: FR-readers confirm in the comments it is much smoother now, but not yet perfect.

P.S.: I am sorry if I am not able to edit the footage and upload on youtube… right now this post is written on a sandy beach… so… just trust me, OK? Done that, let me finish my beer and then jump into the water… and when I come back, I hope to read lots of happy comments ;).

Fujifilm X-T4 Eye Cup Disassembly

One of the nice little touches of my Fujifilm X-T4, is that it has a clickable eyecup, that prevents it from accidentally sliding off.

Yukosteel was intrigued to take a closer look at it, and disassembled the Fujifilm X-T4 eyecup.

At the end he writes:

There are 17 parts in total in this eyecup! […] It’s the most complex design of the eyecup I ever seen, and assembling it feels like working with a wrist watch : )

Check out the full disassembly process and images at yukosteel.

Lensmate Thumbrest for Fujifilm X-T4

A few days ago, Lensmate has released the Lensmate Thumbrest for Fujifilm X-T4 cameras.

It will be available in black only, because “the X-T4 is the darker Silver (graphite) which is very difficult to match using our Anodizing process. So rather than have a Silver thumbrest that was a mis-match we thought it best to offer the X-T4 Thumbrest in Black only.

FR-reader Peter already got his copy, and here is what he thinks about it:

I have the silver x-T4, and the black thumb grip fits perfectly and looks good. The thumb grip raises my hand position on the camera body, lets me rotate my wrist slightly back, opens my hand, and better positions my finger on the shutter button. I also added a soft-release button, which matches the new position of my finger. Overall, an excellent addition to a great camera.

You can find the new X-T4 lensmate thumbrest here.

IBIS Showdown 2020: Fujifilm X-T4 vs Panasonic GH5 vs Olympus E-M1 III vs Sony A6600

IMPORTANT UPDATE: X-T4 is with older firmware and not with firmware 1.02, as imaging resource told me.

Imaging Resource has compared the IBIS performance of the following 4 cameras:

It is unclear if the Fujifilm X-T4 was used with the very recent firmware 1.02, which hugely improved IBIS performance.

Down below you can find the video and a summary of the results.

In short: while MFT cameras still are the top, the Fujifilm X-T4 holds up surprisingly well, whereas the Sony falls clearly behind all of them.

Fujifilm X-T4 ePhotozine Review: Impressive Camera, the Complete Package!

ePhotozine has published its full Fujifilm X-T4 review. Their conclusions:

The camera’s 26mp BSI CMOS sensor and image processing is known to produce excellent image quality, and continue to do so, with exceptional colour reproduction and dynamic range. For those looking to upgrade from an earlier X-T1, or X-T2 camera, the X-T4 offers a compelling set of features, and if you’ve ever been frustrated with battery life from your camera, then the X-T4 offers a great option for you.

The X-T4, with high-speed continuous shooting (up to 30fps), is up there with the quickest, with only the E-M1 II / III and G9 offering quicker continuous shooting (at 60fps), and in terms of video, it’s only the G9 that also offers 4K 60fps video. The switch between stills and video is a great idea, and will benefit video and stills photographers greatly.

The camera is well suited to a wide variety of photography, with good noise performance and IBIS making it better in low-light situations, great colour reproduction making it suited to portraits and other photography, and high-speed shooting further expands the camera’s appeal in particular for wildlife or sports photography.

For anyone wanting the best the X-Series has to offer, the X-T4 is it, with a great 26mp sensor, great colour reproduction, and high-quality video recording, the X-T4 has it all, including high-speed autofocus and continuous shooting. Add in-body image stabilisation, along with improved battery life, and you have the complete package.

Pros

  • 5-axis In-body image stabilisation
  • New battery gives extended battery life
  • Excellent noise performance
  • Excellent colour reproduction and options
  • Improved video recording options
  • High-speed continuous shooting

Cons

  • Increased size
  • Headphone jack via USB C

Double Your Fujifilm X-T4 Recording Time Before Overheating with This Hack (Works Only with Selfie Screen ; ) )

Tony Rustlips found a new way to make good use of the Fujifilm X-T4 selfie screen.

In order to double his recording, all he needs is a cheap insulin ice pack. But be aware, it works only with the Fujifilm X-T4, as you can flip the screen out completely and then place the insulin ice pack at the back of the camera.

Oh well, maybe it’s something that will work for some of you guys, too ;).
