Additional Fujifilm X-S10 Media Slides: 27% Lighter IBIS, New Heat Sink Design for Longer Video Recording and More

I have received additional official media slides about the Fujifilm X-S10.

I’ll share them all down below for you to check out. You’ll maybe learn a few more little tidbits, for example:

  • a new heat sink has been designed, which transfer the heat to the magnesium allow body of the X-S10. This allows for more efficient heat dissipation and therefore allows for longer movie recording times
  • not only the X-S10 has a 30% smaller IBIS, but it is also 27% lighter IBIS unit compared to X-T4 and almost twice as light compared to X-H1 IBIS

IBIS Performance of X-S10, X-T4 and X-H1 on All Fujifilm X Mount lenses Compared

The Fujifilm X-S10 features a brand new IBIS unit.

  • it’s 30% smaller than then one on the Fujifilm X-T4
  • it’s half a stop less effective than the Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS (up to 6 stops instead of up to 6.5 stops)

You can see the IBIS unit of X-S10 side by side with the one of X-T4 and X-H1 in this article.

But which Fujinon X mount lens gets how much stabilization on the X-S10? Well, you can see the answer in the chart above.

Also, the IBIS data above gives you a side by side comparison between X-S10, X-T4 and X-H1.

To sum it quickly up:

  • 22 Fujinon lenses work best with X-T4

Remember: Fujifilm declared downsizing IBIS one of the top priorities. And so far it seems they are proceeding pretty fast.

Fujifilm X-S10 New IBIS Small Enough for Fujifilm X-E4?

Recently FujiRumors broke the rumor about the Fujifilm X-E4 to come in early 2021.

The rumor triggered a stunning number of 230+ comments, and many of them are, as to expect, speculations and wishes about the features of the Fujifilm X-E4.

One of the hot topics was if the X-E4 has IBIS or not.

At this point in time I do not know the answer to this question.

All I could do is to try to imagine if the new smaller IBIS of the Fujifilm X-S10 would fit in the small body of the Fujifilm X-E3.

So I searched long on the internet, until I found a nice and clear technical Fujifilm official sketch of the Fujifilm X-S10 IBIS.

Based on that sketch, I was able to virutally mount the IBIS unit of the X-S10 with high accuracy on the Fujifilm X-E3.

The result is clear: it fits!

And not only it fits, but it seems that it would leave still enough room for the other components, as it would not take away precious space to the EVF, the battery compartment, etc.

Again, I have no idea if the Fujifilm X-E4 will have IBIS (and if anyone out there knows the answer to this question, feel free to let me know via fujirumor@gmail.com or via personal message on social media).

But it certainly looks like if Fujifilm wanted, they could squeeze IBIS into the Fujifilm X-E4, of course provided that the X-E4 keeps the body size of the X-E3 and doesn’t make the X-E4 much smaller than the current X-E3, which is another thing I have no idea of (if X-E4 will have same size of X-E3).

So, there is still a lot we have to find out about the Fujifilm X-E4, and if you are interested, then you should definitely follow FujiRumors.

IBIS COMPARISON: Fujifilm X-S10 vs X-H1 vs X-T4 – Smarter Wiring, 30% Smaller Side by Side with Older IBIS Units

In the latest Fujifilm X Lab episode (which is in Japanese and you rely on a ridiculous automatic google translation that often does not make sense), Fujifilm engineers and managers talk about the Fujifilm X-S10.

They talk about the challenges of shrinking IBIS, how they changed the wiring to make it smaller and more power efficient and other things.

But what is most interesting for us, is that they showed the brand new IBIS units of the Fujifilm X-S10 side by side with the one of the Fujifilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-S10.

As we have learned during the the launch event (which we shared in our huge X-S10 live blog), the IBIS unit on the X-S10 is about 30% smaller over the one on the X-T4.

And looking at the images below, you can really see how the X-S10 IBIS is clearly smaller than the X-T4 IBIS, not to talk of the X-H1 IBIS, which is the first IBIS Fujifilm ever created (well, that’s not technically not correct, but seriously, we don’t count this one, ok?).

It’s impressive how rapidly Fujifilm is proceeding with the miniaturization process of its IBIS, which is a declared top priority for Fujifilm.

Fujifilm X-S10 IBIS Unit Significantly Smaller than X-T4 IBIS Unit

Some guys out there think that the Fujifilm X-S10 will have the same IBIS of the Fujifilm X-T4.

I contacted my sources about it, and this is the answer I’ve just received:

The IBIS unit on the X-S10 is NOT the same we find on the X-T4. It is actually significantly smaller than the one we find on the X-T4. As a matter of fact, it’s Fuji’s smallest IBIS unit ever made (ok, if we don’t count this one ;) )

Remember, shrinking IBIS is one of the top priorities identified by top Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida (who now left the imaging division) in a recent interview. And they seem to proceed very well with this.

Fuji really went a long way from that day back in 2016 when they said IBIS is not compatible with Fujifilm X mount to 2020, when they are able to squeeze a 5axis 6 stops IBIS in a camera as small as the Fujifilm X-S10.

Fujifilm X-S10: Fuji’s First APS-C Mid-Range MILC camera With IBIS

When we first published that Fujifilm would launch a new mid-range camera called Fujifilm X-S10, many of you thought this could be the successor to the forgotten Fujifilm X-S1.

But it’s not!

The Fujifilm X-S10 will be an APS-C mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

It will be a “mid-range” camera, hence be placed into the X-T30 and X-E3 segment. This means it won’t be crazy-cheap like a X-T200, but also not as expensive as the Fujifilm X-T4.

And most interesting, the Fujifilm X-S10 will be Fujifilm’s first camera in that mid-range segment to feature IBIS, a privilege until now reserved only to the high-end Fujifilm X-T4 and Fujifilm X-H1.

I hope this dissipates some of the confusion I was perceiving about it. :)

Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Salt Water Teardown: Weather Sealing Could be Better Around the Dials, but IBIS Unit Could Stabilize a Small Child

Lensrentals made a teardown of a water damaged Fujifilm GFX100 (it was used in an underwater housing for GFX100 and some water went in).

The main criticism:

The outside part of the camera could be better weather sealed. They write:

Did you notice all those weather resisting barriers and gaskets in the teardown? Yeah, me neither. I did notice some wide-open areas around the command dials you could shine a light through, and pour water in if water happened to be around.

That’s interesting, as Fujifilm managers clearly said that one tricky point to weather seal are the areas around the dials, which is why Fujifilm said here they removed some dials on the Fujifilm GFX100, so it’s better weather sealed. Looks like the dials, that remained, could need an additional sealing.

A $10,000 camera should be better weather sealed, period.

But other than that, the construction is top overall notch. Lensrentals writes:

A medium format camera has a big-ass shutter and shutter slap happens. Fuji has advertised a shock-absorbing shutter, but I hadn’t realized they mounted the entire shutter assembly on springs, it’s not mechanically attached to the body at all.

everything in here was as well supported and robust as you could ever hope. The IBIS unit looks like it could stabilize a small child, and certainly is strong enough to support this big sensor.

IBIS Showdown 2020: Fujifilm X-T4 vs Panasonic GH5 vs Olympus E-M1 III vs Sony A6600

IMPORTANT UPDATE: X-T4 is with older firmware and not with firmware 1.02, as imaging resource told me.

Imaging Resource has compared the IBIS performance of the following 4 cameras:

It is unclear if the Fujifilm X-T4 was used with the very recent firmware 1.02, which hugely improved IBIS performance.

Down below you can find the video and a summary of the results.

In short: while MFT cameras still are the top, the Fujifilm X-T4 holds up surprisingly well, whereas the Sony falls clearly behind all of them.

Fujifilm X-T4 Firmware 1.02 Significantly Improves IBIS but Makes Boost Mode Worse?

We just reported about how the Fujifilm X-T4 firmware 1.02 improved video autofocus performance in this dedicated article (with video comparison).

Now here is part 2 of our Fujifilm X-T4 firmware 1.02 coverage, and this time we focus on IBIS.

Down below you can see three videos. All three say that IBIS has indeed been significantly improved (and confirm our early report here).

However, kushagra K noticed that in one specific scenario, IBIS seems to be worse with firmware 1.02 compared to 1.01: Boost Mode! (that’s the mode used to emulate a tripod and should not be used when panning or moving the camera)

According to kushagra K, Boost mode now gives some wavy movements in the corners, that were not there with firmware 1.01. The Issue is more visible with wide angle lenses.

Again, mostly the feedback is very positive, but the thing with the Boost Mode has to be investigated further and, if confirmed, Fujifilm better quickly works to fix it.
